“He’s going to kill you Maddie. I can’t take you there. He’s going to kill you.” I said pulling at her to go back upstairs. She yanked her arm off of my grip.

“He sought me out for this job, I know he did. I applied for a ton of internships when I graduated from high school. The internship wasn’t a job. I didn’t get paid. So, in exchange for money, I did lots of overtime and let him take me on dates on the town, and…I let him pay my rent.” She shook her head. The tears overflowing. “When children’s services did a visit, they decided I wasn’t fit to watch the kids…that it was too much responsibility for a young girl like me, so he drew up the bullshit guardianship papers so I could keep the kids.” She whimpered.
I thought I would die.
“He made me disconnect my phone. I wasn’t allowed to visit you or have any contact with you. He was gorgeous, rich and led an interesting life style I wanted to be a part of…until I saw what it entailed and I’m sure he took it farther than the way it really should be. I was his slave for a year. I did things I’m not proud of. Things you only see in movies…just to please him, so, he wouldn’t hurt me. But, sometimes he did anyway.” She sobbed holding onto the staircase rail. Her face was covered in endless tears; tears she should’ve never needed to shed if I was around to protect her.

“Maddie, what can we do? He has Daniel.”

“Let’s go. I can hold my own.”

                                               ***

We drove to his apartment in downtown Syracuse and my chest was tightening each time we got closer to our destination. Maddie’s hands were clammy. She grabbed my cell phone and called him.

“Andrew…have someone park the car and escort us upstairs. We’ll be there in five minutes.” She hung up the phone.

We arrived in front of the building. We got out of the car and the parking attendant got in and took off. The smug bastard was standing there acting as if he didn’t have a care in the world. He motioned with his hand for us to get into the elevator. We did. I glanced over at him. I got a good look at him this time in the light of the elevator. Maddie was right. He definitely was everything I wasn’t. Tall, good-looking, rich…his suit must have cost thousands of dollars. Jealousy coursed through my veins.
God only knows I wanted to kill him right there in the elevator.
But, Daniel’s life was on the line. All I wanted to do was hold him in my arms, but, I wanted to hold Maddie too, and now I had to hand him over to this motherfucker.

“Well, here we are. Come on in.” He said smiling.

“Where’s Daniel?” I said.

“Easy cowboy. You just got here. Don’t play hero so fast.” He snickered. His words cut through me like a knife. I didn’t know if I wanted to comply or not, and that thought right there was making my whole body tremble.

“I’m here Andrew. Give Stone Daniel so they can leave.” He walked towards Maddie, smiled, then backed smacked Maddie so hard she went flying across the marble floor. I automatically jumped at him when someone grabbed me from behind and put me in a chokehold.

“Are you talking you little bitch? Who gave you permission to speak?” he said smiling.

“Let me go you fuck!” I shouted. This guy had me so tight around my neck I could barely breathe, but I was still fighting him until I saw Daniel in Andrew’s arm. He had a cast around his little arm. My heart broke when I saw Daniel’s face.

“You know; children’s services made a visit to the hospital to check on Daniel. They said they were grateful I had him and not you. They’re thinking of giving him to me permanently after I said Stone might have twisted and broken his arm.” He chuckled. “Isn’t that right Daniel?” He patted Daniel on the head like a dog. Daniel cried. “There, there, little pup. You’ll be alright.”

“Are you out of your fucking mind!” Maddie shouted. He kicked her in the stomach. She rolled over on her back and moaned in pain. I struggled to get out of this guy’s grip but I couldn’t.

“Boy oh boy, you just don’t listen you little bitch. You have to obey. You’re completely defiant.” He shook his head. “This calls for a celebration!” He kneeled down and grabbed her by the arm as Daniel hung from underneath Andrew’s free arm by the waist, practically hanging upside down. Andrew lifted Maddie up on her feet. She seemed disoriented. The guy grabbing my neck finally let me go.

“Please…please…let them go. I’ll do whatever you want.” He grabbed her by her hair, looked into her eyes and squeezed one of her breasts really hard. She cried out in pain. I motioned to go towards Andrew again, but then I felt arms pulling at me again, the same guy who was choking me out before.

“Don’t do it Stone. She needs to be punished. She’s been a very bad girl.” He smirked.

“You’re a sick fuck you know that? Why are you doing this? She doesn’t want to be with you. You’re forcing her.”

“And? Your sister owes me.” He sat down and placed Daniel on his lap. Then, he tapped on Daniel’s cast and Daniel began to cry.

“She’s
not
my sister. Leave Daniel alone, he’s just a baby you bastard!” I yelled trying to release myself from this guy’s grip. Andrew walked over to me and leaned into my face.

“She’s not? Then…your girl owes me.”

“She’s not…” Maddie glanced over at me with blood dripping from her lip.

“What? She’s all mine now. Come on little boy. I know better. You hillbilly hicks think you can outsmart this city guy? How many times have you gotten away with murder? Too many times for my liking.” He snarled.

“It was self-defense.” I demanded.

“Oh please…poof…you two are a modern day Bonnie and Clyde. You should both get the lethal injection.” He said pointing two fingers at us and straightening his five-thousand-dollar suit jacket.

“Your brother tried to rape Maddie and kidnap the kids. What does that make him? What about you?” I said angrily.
I was trying to keep it together, but it was getting harder with every second that passed.

“Yes…yes, I’ve heard it all before. Good looks, power, money…it’s the American dream and I can get away with it, right?

He sat across from me on his leather chair, crossing his legs and lighting up a cigar and blowing the smoke in Daniel’s face.

You see Maddie; I don’t really live this BDSM lifestyle like you think I do…
I just really
am a sick
FUCK.”

“Just hand over Daniel, Andrew and cut the shit!” Maddie yelled.

“You know what…you’re right. Let’s get this over with. Here, take him Stone, then, turn around and walk out.” He blew smoke in Daniels’ face again before handing Daniel over to me. “I’ll think about sending Maddie back to you either tonight or tomorrow…in a body bag.”

“Why are you doing this?” I shouted.

“Just leave Stone…before I change my mind.” He turned his back on me.

“You’re not going to get away with this.” I shouted.

“Go…and don’t call your cop friend, Licky or Lacky, or something like that.” He glanced over at me with a devilish grin on his face.

“What? How do you know Lacky?”

“You heard me. Go and let me think about how I’m going to punish little ole’ Maddie over here.”

“Maddie, I’m coming for you.” I said grabbing on to Daniel. Daniel was crying and whimpering for Maddie.

“Momma!” Daniel cried.

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep hillbilly.” Andrew chuckled.

“Fuck you! You piece of shit! Your day is coming!” Maddie looked at me with those beautiful gray eyes, her lip busted and holding on to her stomach. She whimpered as I left and it broke my heart in two.
How could I leave her there? How?

“Get him out of here! Get out already fucking hillbilly!” Andrew shouted.

His body guard threw me out and pushed me so hard I almost fell holding Daniel. I held in my tears and swallowed the ball in my throat. Daniel cried and cried and I couldn’t console him. I walked down the stairs, caught my breath and stood staring at the building. I couldn’t believe I left Maddie with that bastard. Daniel was crying so much, I had to leave.

I hailed a cab back home and called Clarissa to let her know I was on my way. The cab driver pulled up to the building. I tried to hug and coddle Daniel, but he was screaming at the top of his lungs. I opened the apartment door and to my surprise, Clarissa was still up, I could hear Alyssa crying.

“Hey.” She whispered. “I was giving Alyssa a bottle, but she won’t stop crying.”

“Thanks, I can’t get Daniel to stop crying either. They must feel it. They must feel how I failed Maddie.” I placed Daniel in his bed and took Maddie’s pillow and placed it underneath his head so he could smell her scent. I glanced over at Alyssa.

“She’s calming down; I guess she heard your voice.” She said smiling.

Daniel and Alyssa finally fell asleep. I would wake up early tomorrow and take Daniel and Alyssa to my father’s house so I can go and get Maddie.

Clarissa walked over to the living room, when she saw me cleaning my gun.

“Is that necessary?” She said.

“Yeah, I’m killing that motherfucker tomorrow. If I don’t come out alive, I want you to go to my father and tell him he has to take care of those kids forever. I love them both. Here’s the address.” I handed her a piece of paper.

“I know you do, but I love them, too. I’ll take care of them.” She leaned in so I could hug her. I placed my arms around her. I needed to hold someone. All I thought about was Maddie and how that fucker was going to torture her tonight.
It hurt my soul.

“You can’t do that sweetie. You need to move on with your life. I need to get Maddie and, I need to get the kids far away from here. Please, just do as I say.” I whispered.

“Stone?” She gazed into my eyes.

“Yeah?”

“I know this may be the wrong time…but, I think I love you.” She cupped my face in her hands.

“I…” This was the moment I was dreading. The moment that I knew whatever Clarissa and I had would be over. “I think you should go home Clarissa. I’m having a bad time right now just thinking about Maddie and what that bastard is doing to her. I can’t wrap my mind around anything else. You understand, right?” She lowered her head and I lifted her chin to look at me. “I’m sorry. It’s just not the right time.”

“I understand.” She kissed me on the lips tenderly and I closed my eyes. I needed
my
Maddie right now and even though Clarissa was beautiful, she just couldn’t compare.
No one could compare.

“Good. See you tomorrow before I take the kids?” I whispered against her lips.

“yeah…sure.”

I followed her as she walked out of the apartment and closed the door behind me and locked it.
I wanted to say I was sorry again, but what good would that do?

I grabbed my gun and placed it underneath the bed. I grabbed Alyssa from her crib and placed her on my chest and laid down next to Daniel. I needed to hold my little girl. I may never see them again. Daniel opened his guys and grabbed Alyssa’s little hand. The tears brimmed at the corner of my eyes. I wrapped my arm around Daniel as he shifted his body closer to me.

“Daddy, momma’s coming?”

“Yes, go to sleep champ. She’s coming home.” He smiled and squeezed Alyssa’s hand.

I thought about tomorrow and how I was going to bang on Andrew’s door, bum rush him, then shoot him right between the eyes. I tried to sleep, but all I saw was Maddie’s beautiful eyes before I left, and how I knew that motherfucker would torture her tonight…hurt her, make her cry; maybe even beg for her life. Then, I heard something. I sat up slowly, holding Alyssa tightly. Then, I heard it again. I stood up and placed her on the bed near Daniel.  It sounded like something jangling…like keys…keys jangling at the door…
Maddie?

About the Author

I was Born and raised in NYC...The Capital of the World. As a child, I loved to draw. I spent most of my time drawing instead of playing with dolls. As I got a little older, around ten, I started to write cartoons and plays to act out with my friends on the block. Then, it all stopped. I continued to draw, tried out for a specialized Art High School, but wasn't accepted. So my dreams of becoming an artist fizzled away. My life took a totally different path and writing just wasn't a part of it, unless I had to write a paper for College. Marriage, two kids and three college degree's later, I decided to start writing in 2007, while taking online classes for my next degree. Then, I stopped writing... Life took over. :( (Sounds like my next suspense book...LOL!)
