He was spent. Sex with Corey left him exhausted. CJ wiped his eyes and reached for his jeans and grabbed his cell out of his pocket. Three missed calls. Opening the phone he felt a sudden rush of guilt as he read the name of the caller.

“What’s wrong baby.” Yawning, Corey sat up in bed.
“I gotta go.”

“Are you sure?” Kicking back the covers she got down on her knees and grabbed his belt buckle as she slowly unfastened his jeans. “Seem like someone wants to stay.” Reaching down into his boxers she grabbed the base of his dick and slowly took every inch of him into her mouth.

The caller ID screen illuminated a bright blue as Asjiah’s name appeared on the screen. CJ gave into his addiction one more time as he ignored the call and powered his phone off.

CJ and I met at my high school late into my junior year. I was in my Cosmetology class and all the girls had crowded around the window to see whose stereo was bumping the new Memphis Bleak track. I got up from my station to see what all the fuss was about and saw this brown-skinned dude looking fly in a Kellogg’s racecar jacket. He was standing next to this candy red old school cutlass and immediately I was feeling him.

A low cut Caesar with deep black waves complimented his perfect brown skin tone. He reminded me of Allen Iverson without the braids and all the tattoos. I had to admit, he was sexy. I waited until we made eye contact and then I walked away.

“Asjiah, dude wanted me to give you this.

Peanut butter skin, short brown hair, and an hourglass figure, blended together creating my best friend Keyshia. Our friendship went way back to Paul Revere where we met in Gym class. Her body language said everything that her mouth didn’t as she handed me the small piece of paper.

“Thanks.” I unfolded it to find that he had written; “pick you up after school, CJ”

When the bell rang, just as his note promised, he was waiting in the parking lot. I thought I would make him sweat a little so I settled for school transportation. The bus pulled out of the parking lot and proceeded on its usual route up Broadway towards Miles leaving him sitting alone in his pretty car. I got off when we stopped at 144th, and started walking the rest of the way home to 147th.

R. Kelly was singing to Biggie’s “Fucking you tonight” as he pulled up next to me.
“So I guess you didn’t get my note.”
“I got your note.” Stopping I turned to face him, he looked even better close up.

“So you too good to ride with me then?”
“Did I say that?” Turning away from his car, I continued walking. “Wait up ma.”

I ignored him and kept walking, laughing to myself as he got caught at the light.

By the time he caught up to me I was walking up my driveway. I sat my book bag on the stairs and waited for him to park. I watched him get out of the car and admired his style. Timberlands were regular attire for niggas in Cleveland just like those little jars of flavored Lip gloss were to females.

He had on a chocolate and sky blue striped Enyce shirt and blue jeans. The chocolate Indians hat he wore cocked to the side set off his outfit. Luckily I had changed out of my Cosmo uniform before leaving school and slipped back into some red leggings, an off the shoulder white Guess top, and some white Coach Signature ballerina flats. I knew I looked hot and the way he was sizing me up, he knew it too.

“So wassup ma?” Licking his lips he stood over me at around 6’2” and I loved it.

“First of all my name is Asjiah and not ma.”
“Do you always got this much attitude?”
“Maybe.”

“I’m just saying, as pretty as you are you don’t have to be hard all the time, at least not with me.” Twirling my curls between his fingers he stepped back and looked me up and down. “I mean you look soft as hell.”

I hopped up onto one of the concrete stones as he stepped closer until he was standing between my thighs.
“You can be evil with those other corny ass niggas out there, when they try to get it on with you, but you can save the sweet shit for me.”

“Isn’t that what you doing?”
“What trying to get on? Nah, I already got you.” Rubbing my thigh he continued to work his charm. “I was just coming over here to let you know that.”

“You’re a little cocky aren’t you?” Swatting his hand off my leg I smiled at his arrogance.
“Just confident ma.” Flashing perfect white teeth he corrected his mistake. “I mean Asjiah.”

The glare of CJ’s headlights illuminated the porch causing me to snap out of my daydream.
I walked down the stairs trying to ignore the pain that was shooting through my thighs and down my back.

“Wassup cutie?”
“You’re late.”

“I’m sorry A’, I got caught up in some things. I know we were supposed to go eat but by the time we get to Olive Garden it’ll be closed. Do you just want to go down to Edgewater for a minute?”

“Whatever.”

Looking back at the house I remembered how excited I was when we first moved over here from 142nd. I thought this could be a fresh start for us, that maybe we would finally get a chance to heal. I never imagined it would become my prison.

“It’s all about the Benjamin’s baby/now what ya’ll want to do/want to be ballers/shot callers/…”

Angel turned the radio down in his Explorer as he watched his baby sister get into CJ’s car. He didn’t really have anything against the dude; he was just over protective and didn’t want to accept that his sister had a boyfriend. He knew CJ kicked it with a few girls from the Valley; that he hustled and pushed a little weight but he seemed to really like Asjiah and whatever she asked for, he provided it for her.

As long as he didn’t put his hands on her or do anything to hurt her then he was cool. He didn’t want her to grow up and start having sex and shit but he
knew it was only a matter of time before she did. To him, she would always be his baby sister.
Angel turned on his alarm, flicked the roach in the bushes and walked towards the house.
“Who is that coming in here?”
“It’s me ma.” Angel walked through the living room and entered the kitchen where his grandmother was sitting.

“You mean you came in here without something to eat?” Looking around to see if he was carrying a bag Marie adjusted her nightgown and got up to hug Angel.

“Can you try saying hi sometimes instead of always asking if I brought you something?”
“Yeah, well hi. How you?”

Avoiding eye contact, Angel remembered that he forgot to put Visine in his eyes before walking in the house. He wasn’t trying to blow his high from listening to her nag about him smoking.

“My allergies are acting up”. Rubbing his eyes he faked sickness. “Um, hum. I got a little something on the stove that I made for the kids if you hungry.”

“I’m about to head around the corner to Stacey’s house.” Checking the pots he frowned as he looked at the black eyed peas and neck bones. “I was really coming over here to holla at Asjiah, but I see she left already.”

“What? She ain’t left here, she should be upstairs. She was getting out the shower when I got here.”

“Well she must’ve left when you weren’t looking because I just seen her get in the car with CJ before I came in here.” Settling for a Pepsi, Angel walked over to the sink and rinsed the can off before opening it.

“I don’t know what to say about that girl. Chasing behind that boy like that. Once he gets what he wants from her then she going to be walking round here looking crazy. Then again she probably already gave it to him.” Turning the channel on the small television Marie settled for the news. “I guess she’s not going to school tomorrow.”

“I don’t know ma. When she gets in, let her know I stopped by. Then again, I’ll just try her phone.”
“Oh so you leaving?”
“Yeah, I got some things to do.”
“Uh huh. Okay.”
Kissing his grandmother bye, Angel stepped outside and dialed his sister’s cell.
“Hello?”
“What’s up big head?” Toying with the string on his Nautica sweats Angel stared at the streetlights.

“Nothing.”
“I got something I need you to do for me when you get back.”

“Sike! You missed me, leave a message and I’ll get back at you when I can.”
“Dumb ass voice mail.” Angel put his phone back in his pocket realizing that he had fallen for his sister’s trick yet again.
“What up nephew!”
Angel stepped off the porch as Cash came down the street carrying his usual brown paper bag.

“What up Cash?”
“Shit nothing much. What you got on you?”
“What you need?”
“Let me get an eight-ball.”
Angel reached into his pocket and discreetly made the transaction. “All my money better be here nigga.”

“You know I wouldn’t cheat you nephew.” Taking a swig from the bottle Cash placed the rocks in his jacket. “You want some of this?” Cash extended his arm offering the Bacardi to Angel.

“You know I don’t fuck around with that brown liquor Unc. I just came round here to check on A’. But I ain’t bout to do nothing, going around the corner to get up in my girl, that’s about it.”

“Speaking of getting up in something; your Unc had this pretty young thang, earlier today. Ooh…shit! That pussy was tighter than a Nun on Easter Sunday!” Careful not to say her name Cash felt his dick get hard as he thought about Asjiah.

“Oh yeah?”

“Nephew I’m telling you, you would’ve loved that kitty cat! I had the little bitch begging for my shit! I would’ve gone for round two but that shit was too sweet! I pulled out and came all over her pretty face!”

“You bust on her face?” Angel watched as his Uncle became animated from the story he was telling. “I don’t even want to know where you found her at.” Throwing his hands up Angel silenced Cash’s story. “I’m about to be out though. Don’t smoke all that shit in one place.”

Oblivious to the smile on Cash’s face, Angel got in his truck not knowing that the young girl his uncle described was his little sister.

“Oh you like that don’t you? I knew you were a hoe you blue eyed bitch. Ooh you got some good pussy A! That shit’s super tight, what are you a virgin or something?”

“A’, Asjiah, do you hear me talking to you? We’ve been together for almost two years now and I can tell when something’s not right. You’ve been acting funny ever since I picked you up.”

“I’m fine.” I skipped rocks across the water trying to avoid eye contact. CJ walked up behind me and put his hands around my waist. Given what happened earlier having him so close to me made me jump.
“Yo, what’s wrong with you A’?”
I walked closer to the water, and looked back at CJ as I contemplated my next words. “He raped me.”
“WHAT? A’, what did you just say?”
In an instant CJ was in front of me. He tilted my chin so that he could look into my eyes and when he saw my tears he lost it.
“He raped me! I don’t know how it happened! He dragged me down the stairs and took me in the back bedroom and….and….”
“Shh, don’t cry. You keep saying he, who is he A’?”
Tears stained my face and I could barely speak as I tried to calm myself to tell him who had raped me. “My uncle did it.”

“WHAT? Who? Which Uncle?”
“It…it was Cash.”

CJ never liked Cash. I found out after we start talking that Cash used to run in the same circle as CJ’s uncle Dre over on 108th. A while ago Cash got pissed over a dice game where he lost all his money and then started popping off at the mouth. Dre told him to leave and everyone thought that he had until Cash came back and started shooting.

Dre had to be taken to the emergency room for a shattered collarbone and a gunshot wound to his leg. After shit went down at the dice game, Cash was hot and niggas was looking for him so he decided to get ghost and no one heard from him for months. Dre was like a father figure to CJ so when word got back about what happened, CJ was determined to clap back at Cash. By the time Cash resurfaced CJ and I was together so out of respect for me he kept his cool.

“That’s why I was mad at you when you picked me up. If you would’ve come on time like you were supposed to then maybe you could’ve stopped him. Maybe it wouldn’t have happened. You said you would never let anything happen to me, you said you would always protect me!” Snatching my arm away from him I walked towards the car.

“A’, ma, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” CJ ran behind me and placed his hands around my waist pulling me towards him. “My mom’s out of town for the next couple days so you can stay with me and I’ll take you to school if you want to go.”

He couldn’t believe this shit. That’s why she kept calling. Fucking around with Corey he was busy getting his rocks off at the same time Asjiah was being raped. How was he going to explain that? CJ thought of how terrified she must’ve been, he could only imagine what must have been going through her mind.

There was silence on the drive to CJ’s house. I could see his jaw clenching out the corner of my eye and I knew he was pissed. I felt relieved after I told him what happened like a weight had been lifted off of me. I knew that he believed me but I was scared at the same time because I also knew that this was going to get a lot worse before it got any better.
