What remained of my wild ways was soon tamed by a force even more powerful than my husband's inimitable paddling. A year after our marriage we welcomed Elizabeth Mary Roake, a little girl with dark flashing eyes and the reddest hair anybody in Castlereagh had ever seen. She gained her father's favor from the start, and my undying affection and adoration. Together Percy and I watched her grow into a fine young woman, a woman we were both exceedingly proud of.
We were blessed in the colonies, blessed as a family and blessed as a couple. With each passing year our love grew and blossomed all the more. As a young woman I had thought that transportation would be the end of my life, but it proved to be the beginning of a whole new life of freedom and joy and love beyond any I had experienced in the dirty streets of old London town. The King had condemned me, my country had expelled me, but the master of discipline on a convict vessel had been my redemption.
Was I entirely tamed? Perhaps not. The colonies were too strange and wonderful a place to every be truly civilized. We became part of that new land and it became part of us. To the world I was Mistress Roake, loving wife and mother. To my dear Master Roake, I remained Miss Wilde.
