Chapter Twenty-Seven

Eleanor stood at the VIP arrivals gate holding Joe’s hand and feeling her nerves whisk through her like a meteor shower. She’d just been introduced to his parents, who both seemed delighted that their one-time wayward son was finally settling down under the spell of a good woman – as his dad had put it. Mr and Mrs Quinlan were a striking and attractive middle-aged couple, and Eleanor could see where their children had derived their good looks and charms. They were both warm and friendly, but it was a bit like meeting a couple of veteran movie stars – they were elegant, sophisticated, and very self-assured.

But at the moment, both parents were understandably distracted by the fact they were about to be reunited with their eldest son – who’d been dead to them only a week ago. They’d been reunited on Skype a couple of days ago, but this physical reunion felt as emotional as a new birth in the family. And it was a rebirth of sorts.

Adam and Amy, and Sarah and Dylan were chatting playfully, making Eleanor grin as they all waited tensely. She loved the Quinlan clan, and she was proud to be a part of it. She’d already started planning her wedding – it was going to be very rock and roll. But she’d banned Joseph from wearing his leathers – now that she’d seen how hot he looked in a suit.

She opened her mouth to retort to Adam, but suddenly all the attention was seized by the eldest Quinlan brother as he came strolling through the gate, looking tired but exited.

His mom broke ranks first and ran to him, hugging him tight. “Ivan!”

The others quickly piled in and they all hugged, laughing and talking excitedly at once. Eleanor stood back, watching with joy the lovely family reunion.

“Now we just need your sister here and we’ll all be together,” Mrs Quinlan said.

“It’s good to be on American soil,” Ivan said in his deep masculine voice.

Joseph hugged his brother tight, then he stepped back and held Eleanor’s hand. “Ivan, this is Ellie.”

Ivan studied her for a moment, making her feel like a naughty schoolgirl. He was so manly – the toughest of all the brothers with a glint in his eye that betrayed a childhood spent fighting for survival.

“Great to meet you, Ellie.” He put out his hand, so she shook it. His fingers were soft and long.

“Great to meet you too, at last,” she said.

“Thanks for working so hard to keep that story out the papers.”

“Oh… it’s no problem… of course.”

“You’re a good person,” he said. “And a great journalist – I’ve been following your stories in the NYT all week.”

She blushed. “Oh… thanks.”

He glanced at Joseph who was watching proudly. Then he smiled warmly at Ellie. “I’m sure you’ll make a great addition to the Quinlan family.”

She grinned. “I’m honoured to be part of it.”

“And if I ever want to publish my memoirs – well, I know who to turn to.”

He winked at her and she laughed. “Okay, it’s a deal.”

Adam squeezed Ivan on the shoulder. “Hey, you can stay with me and Amy for a while, okay. Until you acclimatise.”

He gazed at Adam pensively. “Thanks, buddy. But actually, I’m not sticking around.”

“What?” Mrs Quinlan said. “Where are you going?”

He put his arm around his mom and hugged her. “I’ll be back soon, I promise. But I’m going to find Samira. To tell her I love her.”

“But where is she, Ivan?” Joseph asked.

He held his little brother’s gaze with a cocky grin. “Well, Joe – that’s precisely what I intend to find out...”
