8 - Kendra

The sunlight that streamed through my window woke me the next morning. I stretched and turned on my side, my body warmed in all the right places from the long sexy dream about my new boss.

The clock beside my desk said it was ten, which was too early in my book, but it wouldn't be put to waste. I needed to use the rest of my day to get my website back up. Then I could work through getting my bank account opened again should Mr. Wilder want to pay me with direct deposit. I didn't want the embarrassing conversation with him on why it was closed down in the first place. Lack of funds sounded better in my own head than it would in a conversation with Richie Rich.

I slipped out of bed and walked to the desk before putting on my glasses. His white t-shirt and sweats laid over the back of my study chair and I couldn't help but bring the t-shirt to my nose and breathed in deeply.

Small tingles resurrected in my belly and fanned out like fingers stretching across my abdomen as I let myself slid back into thoughts of my illustrious boss. Dark hair and beautiful green eyes, not to mention his big shoulders and strong arms. No wonder he had horny gold diggers posing at nannies.

I cannot say I blame those girls at all.

I stretched again and let the shirt drop to the floor. Tyson was a sweetheart and a half. Being in his life was going to be something special that I couldn't get anywhere else. We had a connection having both lost our mothers. I could help him as he grew up to see beauty beyond the pain.

Wait a second. How long are you planning on being his nanny?

I laughed at the thought of sitting beside Jax at the boy's high school graduation.

Let it go.

I flipped through my phone and found nothing that wasn't there the night before. An e-mail from the hackers cleanup crew waited patiently on me and I scanned through the content, wanting to slit my wrists at the thought of having to work through their tech speak on my Saturday.

My clothes were still at Jax's and I really needed to make a special trip over there to get them. Not wearing anything other than a t-shirt around him half the night was ballsy, but knowing that he wasn't interested in me left me with a sense of security. He didn't want to see what was under the t-shirt. He was going to be more like a big brother figure. Like a really sexy version of Hunter.

The few times I caught him looking at me, he was just being a typical male. I shrugged and got dressed in a t-shirt and comfortable shorts. After pulling my hair into a messy ponytail of sorts, I walked out into the apartment and half expected the smell of something yummy cooking. Nothing.

Odd.

I stopped by Brian's room and pressed the door open a little. I hated to interrupt him or see him and Billy inappropriate in any way, shape or form. He would never let me live it down if I did. The sound of his snoring gave credence to the fact that he was wiped out. He never slept past ten.

I closed the door carefully and walked to the kitchen, getting out the milk and cereal nearest me in the pantry. My thoughts moved back to the baby, the sweet little boy not fussy at all after we figured out exactly what was wrong. He just needed to be burped. Jax probably didn't even need my help past gaining insight into that one thing.

Hush. The job is yours. Stop trying to give it away.

The fact that no one had informed Jax of how to do something as simple as burping the baby left me feeling concerned. What else didn’t he know how to do? I would have to simply work through all of the main parts of caring for an infant while I was there and teach him with subtly if needed.

Having the job was great, but getting attached to the little guy was going to happen, or already had. There wasn't a time in my life that I hadn't been reminded to stay disconnected. Being in foster care and moved around so much, it was imperative to keep your heart free and clear or you would be a basket case every time you were ripped from a home.

I couldn't help it. I was horrible at not investing fully in people back then, and I was now as well. I wanted to hold Tyson while I checked my e-mail and ate my breakfast. It was already starting and would only get worse.

I moved to the kitchen table and slumped down into a chair before working to fix a cup of cereal. I popped open my laptop and cleaned up my e-mail before pulling up the long techie one and sighing.

"Let's do this." I read through the e-mail and ate three cups of cereal without paying too much attention to it. The fix was in-depth and I hadn't realized most of the day was gone until Brian stopped beside me and yawned loudly.

"You get the job?"

I glanced up at him before sitting back and rubbing my eyes. "I think so. I mean, yeah. I still need to figure out the logistics and such, but he's a good guy and the baby is insanely adorable."

"Sorry if I messed anything up. I thought I had my damn keys this morning, but..."

I cut him off. "No biggie. Want to get something to eat?"

My phone buzzed and Brian slid it toward me. "Yeah. Just let me put on something presentable and we'll go."

"Sounds good." I picked up the phone as my heart contracted in my chest. Jax. Clearing my throat, I tried to sound awake and completely professional.

"This is Kendra."

"Hi, Kendra. It's Jax Wilder."

"Hi, Mr. Wilder. What can I do for you?"

"It's just Jax. Don't make me feel old." He laughed and I couldn't help but smile. His voice was liquid sex and his laughter just happened to be the cherry on top.

"Sorry about that. Thank you again for last night. I've never experienced anything so crazy with something I ate."

Brian moved to stand in front of me and lifted his eyebrow as if curious about my
experience
. I waved him off and mouthed, 'later'.

"I'm the one who should be sorry. I almost killed you." He chuckled again. "Anyways. I wanted to call and verify with you that you do in fact have the job. You did a great job with Tyson last night. I'm highly impressed."

"That's great news. Did you want me to start tomorrow?"

"Actually today. I know I said Saturday nights are your nights off, but we'll start that next week."

"Oh. Okay." I turned and glanced at the clock. "What time do you want me there?"

"I'll send a car for you at seven, and one more request that's not really a request, but part of the job."

"What's that?" I turned back to my laptop and hit the final button. The screen cleared and my website popped back up, beautiful and colorful.

"You'll need to pack up. I want you to move in with me."

"Yes!" I muttered at the screen. Realization dawned on me as to what my new boss just forcefully requested.

"Excellent. See you tonight."

He hung up and I sat in stunned silence. Move in with him? That wasn't part of the deal.

I couldn't do that to Brian.

I couldn't do that to me...
