Mark, St
.
One of the four
Evangelists
. He is traditionally identified with the cousin of
Barnabas
who accompanied him and
Paul
(Colossians 4. 10; Acts 12–15). According to
Papias
he was the ‘interpreter’ of
Peter
in Rome (cf. 1 Peter 5. 13). By the 4th cent. he was credited with founding the church of Alexandria. His relics were removed from there to Venice in the 9th cent. Feast day, 25 Apr.
The Gospel according to Mark is the second book in the New Testament.

Manu
) during past and future
manvantaras
(see
Manu
). This core may well belong to the 3rd cent. CE.
