(Jap.). A Japanese linked verse in which each line contains the name of a
buddha
or
bodhisattva
. They were often composed as a memorial for a dead person to accrue merit to him.

(Jap.). One who practises Shin Buddhism (

Shinsh
) in exemplary fashion, and who is likened to a lotus flower. Biographies of my
k
nin were first compiled by G
sei (1720–94) and followed by others of J
do Shinsh
tradition. They were relatively unknown until D. T.
Suzuki
(1870–1965), the
Zen
scholar, drew attention to them as exemplifying Japanese spirituality.
