The sirens were heard in the distance, but just like she’d predicted it was too late. He’d stopped breathing.

‘Oh my god! Someone please help! He’s not responding!’

‘Help is on the way,’ a woman assured her.

Soon enough the paramedics arrived and they began to work on him, but the more they tried the more they knew it was over. They looked over at the crying woman and shook their head. ‘I’m sorry,’ said the woman.

‘Oh my god!’ Freya feel onto his chest. She would’ve won an award for her acting.

‘We’re going to have to take him. Do you want to come with?’

‘No.’ She sniffed. ‘I was just passing by. I haven’t seen him in such a long time. This is such a shock.’

The woman nodded. ‘I’m sorry’ she said again and then they took the body and wheeled him out.

For a moment Freya held onto her chest as if shocked. Then once a few people had comforted her, she walked out of the restaurant. She walked one block and as she did she began to smile. It was done. The mission complete. She loved the way she’d seen him suffer and there was nothing he could do about it. He was helpless just the way she’d felt helpless. It was finally over!

She walked only a few more minutes and then got into the car that was waiting for her. The door opened, she slid in and the car sped off.

‘Hey.’ He took her hand. ‘You okay?’

She turned to him with a wide grin.

‘I’ll take that as a yes.’

She squeezed his hand. ‘It’s over. I feel free. I feel lighter. Thank you.’ This time she took his face into her hands and brought it forward. ‘I love you so much.’

‘I love you too, darling.’

Their lips met and the journey back to the hotel was done with lots of love. It was warm and fuzzy and she wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of her life with him.

The car stopped outside the hotel and he helped her out. They walked into the foyer and to the lift in silence. There was a comfortable feeling between them. It was nice. It was over, but was it really? What would happen when the urge to kill came back again? It would certainly come back, even if they didn’t feel it in that moment.

The moment they entered the penthouse suite, he took her into his arms and carried her to the bedroom. He placed her gently in the centre bed and smiled down at her.

‘I want to marry you,’ he said without hesitation.

‘You do? We haven’t been together long enough.’

‘But we know each other well. We’re made for each other. We’re together forever you and I. I know your secrets and you know mine. We’re are us.’

‘We are, aren’t we?’ She smiled up at him. ‘We’re together forever.’

‘So will you marry me?’

‘Is that a proposal?’

‘Not the most romantic one.’

She laughed. She didn’t care how it was proposed, all that mattered was that it was said. She loved him and that was all that mattered.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, her eyes glittered with love. ‘Yes I will. I’m forever yours.’

‘That makes me a very happy man.’ He lowered and their lips met. ‘I want you so much right now.’

‘Me too.’

With that he took her into his arms and made love to her most of the day.

‘I think we better get room service,’ he said once they’d woken up.

‘Yeah, I’m starving. All we’ve done this afternoon is fuck!’ she giggled.

‘Mmmm yes. I like that word. Say it again.’

‘Fuck. We fucked and fucked.’

‘And now I want to fuck you again.’ He was over her again. She giggled as he found his way to her.

It wasn’t long before they were breathless and looking up at the ceiling.

‘I could do this forever,’ he said.

‘How about room service. I don’t think I’ll be able to last any longer. And I’d like some you know.’

‘Whatever you want darling.’

While he ordered food, she went into the ensuite to snort up cocaine. She was certain that, that habit wouldn’t leave her. It had been with her for so long, she wasn’t sure she wanted to give it up either. She stood up and gazed at herself in the mirror. She may’ve been snorting up cocaine, but she’d been looking a lot healthier. Her cheeks had filled out and she’d put on a bit around her hips too. She laughed thinking about all the places Ferguson had been taking her to. She put her hand to the mirror and ran her hand down the image of her cheek. She didn’t know what the future held or how things would continue, but she was certain the would be okay.

‘Honey, are you alright in there?’

‘I’m fine. I’m coming out in a moment.’

‘Good, because the food is here.’

‘Okay great.’ She quickly splashed some water over her face and patted it dry with a towel. She was ready to go out again.

They sat down to some Italian food that had been brought up at the restaurant. They talked about immediate plans and future ones. They would move to another part of Italy and spend a couple of weeks there. While they enjoyed their meal, Freya got a text from her sister.

‘This is new.’

‘What is darling?’

‘A text off my sister. She rarely texts me unless it’s to shout at me. She’s asking if I’ve seen the news about Blake? I have no idea what she’s talking about.’

‘I think I do.’ He knew exactly what that news had been about. He took a moment to search the net for story about the men who had gone missing. ‘Here.’ He handed her the phone.

Freya was silent while she read it all. ‘Oh my god,’ she said finally. ‘Did you have something to do with this?’

‘Yes,’ he said. ‘They were getting close to finding us out, I had to get the focus off us.’

‘I see. Well.’

‘Does it bother you?’

‘No. Not really. It’s just weird that it’s out there. That’s it’s been exposed. The world knows what they’ve done. I’d say it’s a good ending to all of this.’

‘I would agree.’ He smiled. ‘How about we celebrate with a bit of sparkly?’

‘You don’t drink.’

‘You’re right I don’t. That’s why I’ve got none alcoholic champagne.’

‘Ah…good plan.’

He opened the bottle and they toasted to their success and to the future they would have together.

‘To us.’ She clung her glass against his.

‘Yes, to us!’

There was a ring at the doorbell. Freya got up from the couch and headed for the front door.

‘Amanda?’ She was expecting Ferguson. He wouldn’t ring the bell anyway, but she’d wondered if he’d forgotten his key.

‘You seem surprised to see me.’

‘I am. It’s not like you to visit me in peace. Well I’m hoping this is a peaceful visit.’

‘It is. Are you going to invite me in or not?’

‘Sure. Come on in.’ She widened the door for her to step in. ‘Would you like a drink?’ she asked as they headed for the living room.’

‘A cup of tea would be nice.’

‘Okay. Make yourself at home.’

‘I think I’ll join you in the kitchen.’

‘Suit yourself.’ Freya wondered what was going on. It felt as though her sister was looking at her differently. With a bit more love.

She put the kettle on and took two cups out of the cupboard.

‘I have something to ask you,’ she said.

‘I knew there was something.’ She turned to face Amanda.

‘It’s about the news. I did some research on all the men that went missing. They were all in your year at uni.’

‘Yeah, so?’

‘Well it’s just odd.’

‘What is?’

‘Freya. Did those men hurt you?’ she had to ask. It all was making some sense.

‘Why would you think that?’ She became defensive.

‘It’s just, you were fine when you went off to university, and then one year later, things changed. It was so dramatic. You were in and out of hospital from that point forth. I had no idea why you’d started down that path. I assumed it was all the work put on you at uni, or mum’s death. But now it feels like it was something else.’

‘You have a wild imagination.’

‘C’mon sis you can tell me. I mean you’ve changed. Ever since you met Ferguson you’ve changed. You’ve been out of the hospital and you look so much better. And then there’s the sudden disappearances of these men. It’s all so.’

‘So what?’ asked Ferguson.

They hadn’t heard him come in.

‘So weird. So I don’t know. I might as well just come out and say it.’ She turned to Ferguson this time. ‘Did you have something to do with the disappearances of those men I saw on television?’

‘No,’ he said simply. ‘Any more questions?’

She was silent a while and then looked over at her sister. ‘I guess not.’

‘Good,’ he said.

‘I think I better go,’ she said.

‘You’re not staying for tea anymore?’

‘Sorry. I think it’s for the best. I love you sis.’ She walked up to Freya and took her into a hug. ‘See you soon.’ She walked past Ferguson giving him a nod. They may not have told her, but she was certain this was all to do with Ferguson.

‘That was odd,’ said Freya after the door shut.

‘You thinks she knows?’

‘Yes she does, but that doesn’t mean we have to tell her.’

‘True. You still up to going out tonight?’

‘Of course.  l will always be by your side to support you.’

He moved closer and took her into a hug.

Epilogue

Ferguson and Freya had a small wedding in the country side in the Yorkshire Dales. The only people that had come for Ferguson were the people who worked for him. It was the first time Freya had actually been eye to eye with Gary. He was like some secret person that Ferguson spoke to that didn’t really exist. But he did.

Nicholas was happy that his daughter had finally found peace with someone. Amanda had spared him the details of what she thought the couple had done. She wanted him to continue living the fantasy that Freya was on the road to complete recovery. It was nice to see him happy for a changed.

They finally left the wedding to go onto their honeymoon. A honeymoon like no other, and as she waved goodbye to the loving crowd, Freya knew that her future would be full of new adventures that were probably not for everyone, but worked for them.

‘Have a lovely honeymoon,’ Amanda kissed goodbye.

‘We will, we will.’

The finally got into the waiting car, and they were driven away to their destination.

They stepped into the dark warehouse where a man had been laid on a folding table.

‘What did you say he’s done by the way. I know you sent me the news link, but I’ve just been so busy.’

‘I know you have.’

They approached the panicking man.

‘This man you see lying on the table is a paedophile. He’s molested more than ten boys. I’m sure that’s less than what he’s really done.’

‘So what are going to do to him?’ she smiled.

‘What we always do Mrs. Banks. Would you like to do the honours?’

‘Well. I would love that very much.’

‘All yours my lady.’

She smiled as she looked down at the scum of a man.

‘Please…please lady. Don’t hurt me.’

‘Isn’t that what those boys asked. Didn’t they ask or beg you to not hurt them.’ She went for the black bag, pulled on some latex gloves and pulled out the knife.

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.’

‘Nobody seems to mean it and yet they do it.’

‘I really am. I’ll never hurt another boy again.’

‘Of course you won’t.’ She stroked his left cheek. ‘I won’t let you.’ She lifted the knife and stabbed it into his chest. Once the motion had been started it didn’t stop. Freya jabbed into him repeatedly until there was nothing left of him.

‘He’s dead,’ Ferguson said softly.

She stopped suddenly and looked at the lifeless man. ‘Yes, he is.’ She dropped the knife and pulled off the gloves. ‘You can have the next one.’ She pulled him towards her and kissed him passionately, her body was running wild with adrenaline.

‘If you say so. Now let’s get off to our real honeymoon.’

‘Oh this was real enough, but if we must.’ She giggled.

The couple headed out of the warehouse where so many people had died, leaving the corpse to be handled by his men. Men who had a funeral parlour as a side business, that cremated the bodies of those that had been killed and their ashes disposed of never to be found again. There was never and never would be any trace of those that went missing.

The couple got into the waiting Jeep and headed off to their version of happily ever after!
