Chapter 4

Rejected

We pulled up to the motel where the rest of the Night Riders had spent the night. It was pretty dirty and sketchy looking, so I was glad Dex and I had crashed at my place. I realized that I was going to probably be spending the rest of the week in these types of places and shuddered.

The whole club was waiting outside by the picnic tables. Someone had bought a few boxes of donuts and a bunch of coffee. I realized I was starving and my stomach felt a little queasy from all the alcohol the night before. I gratefully grabbed a donut and a cup of coffee. Dex watched in amusement as I chowed down. He grabbed his own donut and sat next to me on the bench.

“I took you for a calorie-watcher,” he said, taking a sip of my coffee.

“Hey, that's mine!” I protested. “And there is a lot you don't know about me. I could probably down ten of those,” I said between mouthfuls.

“Hm, better watch out or you'll get fat,” Dex said laughingly, poking my slender side. I gave him a death glare.

“No I won't,” I replied. “Besides, some guys like women who are soft and squishy.” Dex  laughed and shook his head like I was crazy. I could never tell if he was laughing with me or at me, but his happy, carefree attitude made me smile. The bikers all scarfed down their donuts and coffee in a few minutes and we were ready to hit the road. I saw Gary, the fat biker who had been a jerk to me the night before talking  in angry whispers with a blonde biker off to the side.  I walked over to the trashcan near them, trying to hear what they were so upset over.

“We've got it all packed up safe,” Gary whispered harshly, like it was the end of the conversation.

The blonde biker shook his head. “Ain't nothing safe enough for where we are going. I've got a bad feeling about this. The Vipers are just looking for an excuse.”

The men saw me looking their way and quickly shut their mouths. I smiled and waved, trying to pretend I hadn't heard anything. What were they talking about? Something abut safety and snakes? I shivered, hoping we didn't encounter snakes or any other wild animals.

The men grabbed some heavy duffels and loaded them up in a van that one of the Night Riders was driving.

“What's with that?” I asked Dex, pointing to them loading up the large, heavy looking duffels.

“Tom is going to be driving instead of riding with us, so some of the guys wanted him to carry their clothes and stuff. Now stop asking questions.” Dex looked irritated.

I looked at the van suspiciously. The duffels looked like they carried something heavier than clothes. They were certainly too big and there were too many of them to be just these bikers' wardrobes. But Dex's face told me that he wouldn't welcome any further questions.

I climbed back on Dex's bike and realized I had no idea where we were heading. I was about to ask Dex, but the roar of a dozen bikes starting up cut me off. By the time the noise had died down a little, I realized that it didn't matter where we were going. The adventure would be in the journey.

It felt great at first, but as the afternoon sun started to bear down on us a few hours later, I realized my thighs were in serious pain and I was sweating through my t-shirt. Being pressed up against Dex's leather-clad back didn't really improve the situation either. When we took a break for lunch and for everyone to use the restrooms in the fast food restaurant, I grabbed a bottle of water and poured it over my head. A few of the bikers hollered and whistled at me, as the wet shirt clung to my figure and I instantly regretted it. I was feeling crabby by the time Dex walked out of the restroom and sat down next to me.

“I don't know why the hell anyone with a brain, or anyone who isn't a masochist would join a motorcycle gang,” I grumbled to him.

“For the same reason people join any sort of club, like a sorority. I bet you were in a sorority, weren't you princess? You sit there all corn-fed and privileged and judge us, but these men are like my family. We ride because it is fun and a way to express our freedom, but we are Night Riders because we are a family.” Clearly, I had pissed him off. I wanted to retort back to him, but Dex turned his back to me and started talking with Jason, the club's VP. Apparently Jason was one of Dex's closest friends and I got the feeling that Jason didn't approve of me being there.

Dex didn't speak to me again for the rest of the short break or during the ride that afternoon. I felt guilty for insulting him, but also annoyed at his attitude and grumpy about feeling so tired and uncomfortable. I could have been at my home, curled up on my couch with a good book and instead I was sore, hot, and sticky and stuck on a motorcycle behind a guy that I barely knew and didn't like very much. I silently fumed for the rest of the afternoon and barely noticed the countryside as it passed by. When night started to fall, we pulled up to a rest stop area with a few small restaurants and a  motel. After a few minutes of debate, the bikers decided on a burger restaurant. I wasn't consulted, but my stomach was growling and I would have happily ate pretty much anything at that point.

When we entered the restaurant, Dex didn't sit next to me, but went to join a table with Jason and a few of the other bikers. I looked around to try and see where I should sit. There were two tables that had room for one more. I was about to head towards the closest one, when a guy with short blonde hair called out from the other.

“Hey, why don't you come sit with us?” His voice was actually warm and inviting, a nice change of pace from my earlier conversation with Dex. I walked over and scooted over on the bench so I was next to the blonde guy.

“I don't think I've had the pleasure of introducing myself to you yet,” the blonde said in a kind voice, extending his hand. “I'm Peter.”

“Nice to meet you,” I said as I put my food down. “I'm Sarah. I guess you already know that though.” Peter nodded.

“Yeah, you were pretty much the main topic of conversation last night.  It is good to have a girl along with us for a little while at least.” I smiled and decided I liked Peter. He was polite and civilized, unlike Dex. We chatted for a while between bites of burgers and fries and Peter seemed interested in everything I had to say. The other guys at the table mostly ignored us, talking about their bikes and making crude jokes. But Peter never took his eyes off me. I glanced over at Dex to see if he was watching, but he seemed to be deliberately ignoring us. Or at least ignoring me.

Chapter 5

Deceived

Once everyone was finished with dinner, we got up and headed over to the motel. Dex went to the front desk and got us some rooms while the rest of us waited around outside. The air was warm and it was a beautiful night. I leaned slightly against Peter, who put his arm around me as I stared up into the sky.

“Alright, you guys know the drill. Four to each room. Sort yourselves out. Sarah, you've got your own room.” Dex handed out keys, but didn't make eye contact with me as he handed me my set. I started to feel guilty for upsetting him so much, but I was also feeling hurt and angry that he was acting so cold to me after convincing me to come along on this ridiculous biker trip.

“Hey, don't worry about that asshole,” Peter said as I stared at Dex's turned back. I turned to see Peter had come back up to my side. “He is just being a dick because he feels like you aren't worshipping him enough. That guy feels like the world owes him everything. Like that ridiculous stunt he pulled by claiming you. He can't decide who you want to be with or who any of us choose to be with.”

Peter spoke quietly in my ear so none of the other bikers could hear, but I felt like I was finally speaking with someone who made sense and treated me like a human being, an equal. He was sweet and I liked him. He was everything that Dex was not. I decided that I knew just how to get back at Dex for being such a dick. I waited until Dex turned around to survey the group and then turned and pressed my lips up again Peter's. His mouth was cool and inviting. He kissed me back hard, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. I finally pulled back and glanced over. Dex's eyes were narrowed and he shook his head at us but didn't say a word. Instead, he turned and stormed off to his room. Several of the other bikers followed suit, shaking their heads in disgust at us.

“You are playing with fire,” one of them warned before turning away. I didn't know if he was speaking to me or Peter, but I didn't care. Dex could fume all he wanted. I had already told him that he wasn't going to win me over. He couldn't lay claim to me like I was a piece of property and forbid me from flirting with any other men. I had free will. And even though he seemed to enjoy being the dictator in this group of bikers, they had free will as well. Peter didn't seem to care either.

“Why are you even part of this gang?” I asked Peter as we walked hand and hand to a bench over by the side of the mostly empty parking lot.

“I guess I didn't know what I was getting into,” Peter replied. “I liked bikes, I wanted to do something fun and cool, and Dex made me all sorts of promises that he didn't keep.”

“Like what?” I asked, curious to learn more about Dex's dark side. But Peter just shook his head in response.

“I wanted more than this. I tried to talk to some of the guys, get them to see that Dex was leading the group all wrong. But they ignored me and just kept reciting the Night Rider code to me like it was somehow magical or something. Said Dex would stay in charge. You should be careful around him. Bet he didn't tell you about where we are going or what he is bringing with us.”

“And what is that?” I asked sharply.

“Oh, I don't know,” Peter said defensively. “It isn't like I'm privy to all the details. But I can tell you for sure we aren't headed to a convention.”

I felt like he knew more than he was letting on, but decided not to push it. It was nice to finally have someone friendly near me and I didn't want to piss him off.

Peter sighed, and then wrapped his arm around me again. “At least I got something Dex wanted,” he said with a chuckle and pressed his lips against mine. I kissed him back, our mouths pressing together and keeping the chilly night air at bay. We sat there together for a long time, before I finally felt myself fighting a yawn. I was tired and sore and it had been a long day on the road. I knew that tomorrow wasn't going to be any easier.

“I should probably head to bed,” I finally said apologetically through a yawn. “But thanks for talking to me. See you tomorrow?” Peter smiled at me.

“Sure, I'll walk you up to your room.” We said good night at my door and I closed it behind me, finally feeling some peace. Maybe this strange trip wouldn't end up being a total disaster. I had met Peter, who, despite being part of the Night Riders, seemed to be everything I was looking for in a guy.

I walked over to the dirty little bathroom and looked at myself in the streaked mirror. My hair was a mess from the wind and my helmet and my skin and clothes were covered in a layer of grime. I looked like a badass, or possibly just a degenerate, but definitely nothing like Sarah, the sweet and wholesome school teacher.
Which one was the real me?
I wondered.
Am I an adventurer or a homebody?
I still wasn't even sure how this whirlwind had started and how I had let myself end up here. I sighed and turned on the shower. The water only came out in a small stream, but it felt warm and comforting against my skin. I rubbed off the grime and watched the water change from a greyish color to clear as I finally rinsed out the last of the day's dirt from my hair and fingernails. I stepped out of the shower and wrapped myself in a towel. Going through my bag, I realized that I hadn't packed my sleep clothes in the hurry the night before. I slipped into a pair of panties and a clean t-shirt instead.

I was totally exhausted by the time I hit the bed. I didn't have time to lay awake thinking about my future or any of the questions that I had been pushing aside. Instead, sleep overtook me almost instantly. I was dreaming of being a child again and running around with my friends in the cornfields, pretending that we were exploring some newly discovered jungle when I jolted awake.

The room was still dark, but I could sense that I was not alone. The outline of a figure appeared next to my bed and before I could scream, a hand quickly covered my mouth.

Chapter 6

Attacked

“Shh, don't scream. It's just me.” It was Peter's voice. My heart was still pounding in my chest, but the panic drained out of me. Peter pulled his hand back and sat on the edge of my bed.

“Peter!” I gasped. “What are you doing here? Is everything ok? How did you get in?” My eyes flew to the door that I had latched the night before. It now stood slightly ajar.

“Everything is fine,” Peter replied. “I just had to see you. I missed you.” I smiled.

“That's sweet, but I can see you tomorrow. I can ride with you if you like,” I replied, wondering what time it was. A quick glance at the clock told me it was only a little after 2:00 in the morning. I was still exhausted.

“I know, but I wanted to get closer to you. I wanted this,” Peter said, pulling the blanket off me and revealing my half naked body. I tried to pull the blanket back, but Peter held it there.

“Peter...” I said warningly as I yanked the shirt down to cover my panties. “It is not going to happen. Go back to bed.” The look on Peter's face changed from sweet to furious in one quick flash.

“Why? Because Dex claimed you? Well Dex doesn't get to have everything he wants. And I'm going to take everything from him and show him that he isn't the only one in charge.” Peter grabbed my arm hard and held it down. I tried to twist out of his grasp, but he only squeezed tighter.

“What the fuck, Peter! This has nothing to do with Dex. Just let me go and go back to bed. You must be drunk.” But he didn't stop. He used his knee to push open my legs and then got between them, holding me down. He grabbed both my wrists in one hand and held the over my head while he started to unbuckle his belt. I tried to thrash my legs, but he used a quick, painful knee to my thigh to make me stop. I wanted to scream, but Peter was too quick. He pulled up my shirt over my face and stuffed a handful of it in my mouth. I felt like I was choking on it and could barely breathe. I felt his rough hands grab at my naked breasts, pawing at them harshly while he still fumbled with his fly. I squirmed and thrashed, trying desperately to get free.

Peter undid his fly and let out his cock. I groaned in fear and disgust. I couldn't believe I had been so stupid. I was stupid to agree to come on this trip with these bikers I didn't even know, stupid to have fallen for Peter's sweet talking, stupid to have put myself in this situation. Anger flooded me. I was going to be raped here, in this dirty motel, by this biker who wanted revenge on someone else. This is where my sad fairytale had led me. I had to fight. I had to do everything possible to stop him. I twisted my head back and forth until some of the shirt dislodged from my mouth and took a quick breath.

“Help!” I screamed out. “It came out more muffled than I had hoped, but maybe someone had heard. Peter reached down and slapped my face hard. Tears sprung to my eyes, but I was not going to give up. He stuffed the shirt back into my mouth, but I managed to bite down on his fingers. He yelped and then punched me hard in the cheek. The world titled and faded from view. The last thing I saw was Peter grimacing over me as shouts filled the room.

I came to a few moments later to Dex's worried face hovering over me. I groaned as a wave of pain hit my face. The nausea came on quickly and I only just had time to lean over the edge of the bed before I retched onto the floor. Dex quickly grabbed my hair and held it back from my face. Once I was done, he handed me a tissue to wipe my face.

“Peter!” I said in a raspy voice as I wiped my face clean. “He was...he tried to...” I started sobbing, unable to finish the sentence.

“Hey, it's okay,” Dex said, helping me sit up and putting all the pillows behind my back. “We got here in time. I punched even harder than he punched you. The guys are holding him in a different room right now. He is no longer a Night Rider. We are going to dump him somewhere before heading out.” His eyes flashed with fury while he talked but softened when he looked at me. “Sarah, I'm sorry for what happened. I told you that no one would touch you and I couldn't keep that promise. I just want you to know that I had no clue Peter was this messed up. He had been complaining about trying to change things with in the club, trying to change leadership and take us in a different direction. He obviously acted out of his anger and resentment to me. It's my fault. I'm sorry.” He looked pained and genuinely remorseful. I couldn't hold it against him. Dex might be annoying and imperious, but he had been good to me so far. And he had stopped Peter from raping me. That was the important thing.

“It's alright. I'll be fine,” I said touching my cheek and wincing. I knew it was going to form an ugly bruise. “Just make sure to dump that asshole somewhere far away from me. And someplace really horrible and desolate if you can,” I said as Dex grinned at me.

“Done!” he said, sounding much more cheerful now. “We'll be getting a later start today while Jason and Mike deal with Peter. If you want to get cleaned up and dressed, I would like to take you to a real breakfast.” He helped me to my feet and then walked to the door. “Hurry up though,” he said with a laugh as I walked towards the bathroom. “I'm going to be waiting out here for you and I don't want to be standing here all day.” I sighed and stuck my tongue out at him, but did rush to wash up and get dressed. Glancing in the mirror, I saw the red mark where Peter had punched me blooming red under my eye. I didn't even bother to try and cover it with makeup. Instead, I pulled on some clean clothes and walked to the door. Dex was standing out there, just like he had promised.

“I'm impressed,” he said when I stepped outside. “Only fifteen minutes this time.”

“Hey! Are you making fun of me?” I asked.

“Me? Never. Now come on, I know the best little diner around here.” I got behind him on the bike and we drove down the road a while until we pulled up to a small, hole-in-the-wall type place. It didn't look like much, but it smelled fantastic once we walked inside. My stomach rumbled as the friendly waitress seated us in a booth.

“So, do you trust me?” Dex asked.

“Um, I guess so,” I replied, looking over the menu.

“Good. Then I'll order for you. I promise you won't be disappointed.” I laughed as he smiled at me like an excited kid. He infuriated me but also made me feel happier than I had felt in a very long time. I agreed and let him order. He ordered us chocolate chip banana pancakes and a special omelet with bacon. I raised my eyebrows but didn't say anything. The waitress poured our coffees then left to put in our order.

“So, what was the problem between you and Peter?” I asked, taking a sip of the warm, black coffee. It was very strong and sent a jolt through me, making me feel instantly more awake and alert. I leaned in to listen to what Dex had to say. He sighed and leaned back.

“Peter only joined the Night Riders two years ago,” Dex said. “He was a messed up kid, on drugs and in with a bad crowd. But he really seemed to want to straighten out. We took him in and he seemed to be doing really well. But I always had this nagging feeling that he was a really good actor. It didn't take too long before I heard whispers from the guys that Peter wanted to get the group involved in some really bad shit. He wasn't happy with the way that I ran the club and he thought he could do a better job. Mostly, I think he just wanted power. He was good at hiding his intentions though. When he spoke to me, he was always grateful and deferential. I had my suspicions, but there was never any solid proof he was such an asshole. Until now.” A cloud had formed over Dex's face and he was lost in his own thoughts, perhaps thinking over the various signs that he had overlooked.

“Hey, don't feel bad,” I said, reaching out and taking his hand. “He tricked me too. He is apparently really good at reading people and giving them what they want until it is time for him to stab you in the back. He is a manipulator.”

Dex nodded. “I know. I wish I had acted on my intuitions before he attacked you. When I saw him with you last night, I heard warning bells in my head, but I was mostly still so annoyed with you that I dismissed them. I thought maybe it was just anger at him for breaking the code, but it was something more. I knew there was more to him than what he was presenting. I knew he was a snake. But I didn't warn you. I'm sorry.”

I  nodded and gave his hand a squeeze. “I...have an apology to make as well. What I said to you yesterday was mean and unnecessary. And I was really only hanging around Peter last night to try and piss you off,” I finished sheepishly.

Dex grinned. “Ha! I knew you were trying to make me jealous!” he exclaimed triumphantly.

“Did it work?” I asked, batting my eyelashes at him.

“Oh, is that the game you want to play?” he asked. “Well, I'm not really worried about any competition. Honey, I like this game and I'm going to win. You can't resist me.” I laughed with him and finally felt really relaxed and happy. Maybe Dex wasn't so bad after all.

The waitress came over with our giant plates of food. It smelled incredible. I had made the right choice in letter Dex order. Clearly, he knew what he was doing. He knew about so many different places, and all I knew was my little town that no one outside of Nebraska had even heard of before. After we scarfed down most of the delicious, piping hot food, Dex dropped some money on the table and we hurried back to the motel to meet up with the rest of the club.

They had already dealt with Peter. Jason whispered something in Dex's ear and Dex nodded and slapped him on the back. No one said anything to me about what had happened or what they had done with Peter. I was grateful to not have to talk about him.

We all climbed up on the bikes and took off towards the main highway for another full day of riding.
