Keeping her eyes dead ahead, Cindy bobbed around the sprinklers and flowerbeds till she was up against the wall, crouching down and gasping for breath as she tried to recover. Her heart was going a mile a minute in her chest. This was a bigger rush than anything she’d ever felt in her life. She could only imagine what it would actually feel like to hold those millions in her own hands.
Once she’d recovered enough to keep moving, Cindy began to shimmy her way along the wall, staying beneath the line of sight of the windows. The room she’d seen her step-daddy and uncles in was about five windows down and she counted them under her breath as she went. There wasn’t going to be any leeway for making mistakes here.
The light from the window spilled out into the darkness as Cindy crept beneath the sill. She could hear the muffled sounds of their voices inside but couldn’t make out what they were saying. Damn it, she cursed silently.
Ok then Cindy, she told herself, this is it. The stakes are officially raised. Whatever happens next is going to be tense.
Seriously
tense.
She took a deep breath and then lifted herself slowly to peek over the rim inside. All it would take would be for one of the brothers to be gazing out the window at that moment and the gig would be up. Thankfully, the guys were too preoccupied inside.
With just her eyes above the window line, Cindy watched as Ray’s strong muscular figure bent forward over the pool table to line up his cue. His arm swung back like a well-oiled piston and he smashed the cue into the balls, sending several into the nets at once. That was Ray still just being Ray then.
Cindy turned her attention to the rest of the room and the uncles she hadn’t seen for more than two years. There was Charlie, drinking a beer and telling some longwinded joke to Buck just like he always did. Buck as usual was looking serious and grim, his strong handsome face peering out at his brother from behind his spectacles. Playing pool with Ray was Tony, his tall well-built body leading all the way up to his shock of red-hair, as fiery as his personality. The door opened and the final brother walked in carrying a fresh crate of beer. He was Mark, the youngest and most handsome of them all, with his blonde hair and big brown eyes. If Cindy hadn’t been here on other business she could think of something else she wouldn’t mind getting off these guys. Something
dirtier
…
She stopped herself. That was sick. These guys were like family to her, how could she ever consider fucking them? Although it wasn’t like that prior relationship had stopped her from trying to steal their cash though, had it? And the Malone brothers
were
seriously sexy looking.
She ducked down beneath the window and shook her head. It was time to get serious here. The game was too dangerous now to let other thoughts cloud her judgment. She was going to have to get inside and find a way to eavesdrop on her daddy and uncles.
Crouching low, Cindy began shimmying her way back towards the main entrance to the lodge. It was a hot night and the guys were bound to have left a window open somewhere along the three-story building. All she had to do was find it and she’d have her way in.
She was almost to the driveway again when a huge floodlight flashed on, illuminating the whole estate around her. Cindy froze. She pressed her back hard up against the wall. The damn thing must have been motion sensitive. It was only a miracle that she hadn’t triggered it off the first time round.
She heard the sound of the rec-room window opening. Cindy held her breath.
There was a moment of silence and then a voice.
“I don’t see shit
fellas,
it must have been a coon or something.”
In the background, she heard Ray respond, low and serious. The guy was taking no chances. “Maybe,” he said, “but we better check it out anyway. Take a cue each. If it’s somebody trespassing then we’re going to teach them a lesson they won’t soon forget.”
Oh shit! Cindy glanced back at the driveway and the main door and then back at the far end of the house. Could she make it around the corner before they got outside? She had more than twice the distance to travel than they did but there was nowhere else to hide. And then she realized that the window to the rec-room was still open. All she had to do was get inside before they got to the front door and she was safe. Without a second thought she made a run for it. A moment later she was hoisting herself through the open glass, just as the main doors opened outside and the brothers spilled out into the yard.
Inside, the rec-room was warm and well lit with softly-glowing lamps. Besides the pool table there was a bar, a wide-screen TV, and a foosball machine, as well as a set of expensive leather couches. It was a true man’s paradise.
And then Cindy saw something that made her forget any sense of uncertainty or danger whatsoever. Over in the corner on a little table there were two bulging duffle-bags filled with hundred dollar bills. It was the cash, right there in front of her, ready for the taking.
She grabbed the bags and zipped them up. Outside she could hear daddy and his brothers roaming around the yard. They wanted to play it safe and make sure there really was no one out there. If only they knew where the real threat lay…
Struggling to lift the bags but somehow managing, Cindy went to the door and stepped out into the hall. She couldn’t go to the front door and the back entrance seemed only to lead out to the lake, but she’d seen the wooden doors to a cellar earlier that opened out onto the lawn close to the tree-line and would make the perfect getaway back into the woods and on to the road where her car was parked. This was it, she was almost free and about to be richer than she’d ever imagined possible, even in her wildest dreams.
“See, I told you it was a coon.”
The door slammed shut as the Malone brothers stepped back into the hall. For a second Cindy froze. She had to find the cellar. Fast.
“Maybe,” Ray said, “and maybe not. Either way, we’re sitting on too much blood money here to risk it.
Even if one single trespasser saw what we’ve got going on here and told someone else…
Well hell, this could turn into the shootout at the OK Corral in no time.”
Cindy scanned the doors of the hallway. Under the stairs, she saw what she was looking for and dashed towards it. In a split second Ray and the guys would be around the corner.
She opened the door and stepped through, breathing a sigh of relief as it slid silently closed behind her. But her relief didn’t last long, because now she was trapped in a tiny broom closet, not the cellar at all, and there was no way out again except back into the hall.
It was dark and she listened silently to the footfalls of the brothers walking back to the room. How long would it take before they noticed the cash was gone?
Minutes?
Seconds?
She was really screwed this time.
A split second later she got her answer.
“Motherfucker!”
Cindy didn’t think she’d ever heard Ray that angry. She didn’t think she’d ever heard anybody that angry, in fact. Her heart would have brimmed with pity for whoever that anger was directed at – if not for the fact that it was her herself.
“No!” Tony shouted. “How… how could this have happened?”
“Let’s take it easy for a second,” Buck, ever the voice of reason, spoke, “are we sure none of us moved it somewhere?
Maybe to make room for beer or something?”
“It was right there,” Ray said, “I remember taking one last look at it before we left the room.”
Cindy held her breath as a moment of silence ensued before he went on.
“You.
You left the God-damned window open Mark!” There was a crash and Cindy cringed, imagining what had happened.
“Hey,” Uncle Charlie piped up, “it was an easy mistake Ray. Let’s not turn on each other. At least not while this fucking rat is still out there somewhere with our swag.”
“Ok then,” Ray said, “I’ll check the grounds with Buck and Mark. Tony, you go out back and make sure they didn’t come in by boat. Charlie, you check the house to make sure our little visitor hasn’t decided to overstay their welcome.”
“Hey,” Charlie said, “
if
they’re still here then they’re definitely welcome in my book. In fact, I don’t want to let them leave ever again.”
Cindy clutched the duffle bags tight in her hands. What were her odds of making it out of this without her daddy and uncles catching her in the act? Slim, at best. She was going to have to think of something to say here, play the sweet little girl maybe. Yeah, that was it. All this nonsense was just a prank she was playing on her daddy and favorite uncles. It was the best she could come up with and there wasn’t time for anything else.
The door swung open and the closet filled with light as Charlie’s eyes widened in recognition.
“Cindy? What the fuck…”
“Hi Uncle Charlie,” Cindy smiled, fluttering her eyelids sweetly. “Looks like you caught me in the act. Boy, I had you guys going there. Daddy’s going to think it was hilarious.”
Charlie narrowed his eyes and just like that Cindy knew she was done for. He wasn’t buying it. None of them were going to buy it. You didn’t bullshit guys like Ray Malone and his brothers too easily and live to tell the tale.
“Step out of the closet slowly. You got a gun or a knife or anything?”
Cindy’s phony smile faltered.
“Jesus Uncle Charlie, of course not.
What do you take me for?”
Charlie ignored the question. “Start walking back to the den,” he said, “and put those bags right where you found them. I presume you know what’s inside, right? Of course you do. Otherwise why would you be here?”
As Cindy walked like an inmate on death-row back to the rec-room Charlie called out to the other brothers.
“Hey guys! I’ve caught our intruder. Hurry up and get back here.”
It didn’t take them long. The Malone brothers were very eager to see just who’d had the guts to dare cross them.
Ray only showed his surprise for a second and then his expression was stony-faced once more. Somehow the way he looked at her, like he expected better than this from her, made Cindy wish she could have been the good little girl he’d always believed her to be. Now it was too late.
“What the hell kind of idea got you into this?”
He almost didn’t sound angry.
Almost.
“I… daddy, I’m sorry. I’ve got debts, serious debts.”
“And this is how you deal with it? You come to me, not to ask for my help but to steal from me? When surely you must have known that I would have helped you out of any problem, financial or otherwise?”
Cindy hung her head in shame, only partly an act, as she sat on the chair between them. When he said it like that it made her sound like a total bitch. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Ray shook his head, his face still hard and firm. “No,” he said, “I treated you like my own little girl, but not anymore. From now on
you’re
nothing to me. I’ve seen your true colors. I have no daughter.”
“Daddy, please!” Cindy sobbed, forcing tears out of her eyes in a last ditch attempt at self-preservation. If she wasn’t daddy’s little girl anymore, if Ray really meant it when he said that they were as good as strangers now, then her chances of surviving this were severely diminished. She only hoped that he’d fall for the act.
“Cut the shit Cindy.”
She sniffled as woefully as she could manage and tried again. “
But daddy
…”
“I said cut the shit. If you’ve got the balls enough to pull something like this then I know you’re strong enough to hold yourself together for five minutes with me.”
He was right and he knew it. Cindy looked around her at the firm faces of her uncles. They all did. It was time to change tact. Maybe she could still get something out of this after all.
“Ok then,” she said, “I’m a big girl now, I can live with that. So what happens next? Are you going to punish me?”
“Way I see it, we don’t have much choice,” Ray said.
Cindy smiled defiantly, feeling the heat of arousal in her body, so small and weak on the chair compared to the well-built uncles standing all around her. “And how are you going to do that then?’ she asked, “Are you going to
fuck
me daddy?”
