“Did it make her stronger, you think? Coming home?”

“Can’t say, really. I didn’t know her before, but she didn’t feel like some post-born witch to me. She felt legit. Dark, though. The world’s better off without her.”

“Us too.” The car went silent again and he didn’t speak for several miles. When he did, he sounded wholly unburdened. “So, on the scale of first dates...”

“Not sure you’ll get a call back.”

“But I’m hot and good in bed.”

“True, true, but I need a man willing to do the domestics. I have no talent for it.”

“I’ll cook for you every day.”

“Even when I’m old and gray?” Saying that hurt more than she imagined it would and she turned to stare at the passing buildings. She tuned out for a while, unable to talk over the dull ache in her heart. She was being stupid. She knew it. Nothing she could do would stop her from aging. Nothing decent, anyway. Could she wish such a thing?

“What is it?

“Nothing. I’m just happy to see the airport.”

“Dinah?”

“Just make sure I’m in the best nursing home of all time. You can afford it.”

“I’ll be right there with you...four of five centuries from now. What’s all this about?”

“Tig, I’m a witch. We age like regular people.”

He pulled the car into a far off lot and only parked after passing dozens of empty rows. “Baby, you’re not going to be through with me in sixty or seventy years. It’s the lamp that slows our aging. You’ve got lifetimes to learn how to cook a decent meal. As long as you want me, we’ll be together. Now I’m going to say something and all I want you to do is listen. I’m fine and I’ll be fine, if you just listen.”

“Okay.”

“And no freaking out.”

“I’ll try.”

“Good.” He cleared his throat, gripped the steering wheel and stared straight out the window. “Dinah Alexandria Anise Arlani Authement, I accept the gift and power of your name. I am sealed to you.”

“Tig, I don’t know what to say.”

“Didn’t I just tell you not to say anything? I’m not rushing you into this. I’m attached to you, you’re still free.”

“Look at me, Tig.”

“When you’re ready, however long that takes, just say it back to me.  You know, names switched and all. Doesn’t have to be soon. Lord knows you spaz the hell out—”

“Tig—”

“Get out the car. We’ve got a plane to catch,” he said and fumbled with his seatbelt.

Now it really hurt to look at him, but in the weirdest, most beautiful way. Her eyes burned. Her heart clenched. Her hands tingled at the thought of touching him. Only one thing was still – her soul – it’d finally stopped its aching. “Hafiz Khalid Tiglathpileser Wahid, I accept the gift and power of your name.”

Raw emotion consumed who she was and her bones couldn’t manage to keep her upright. Power, unlike any she’d ever known, shot through her body like a hot knife through butter. If not for Tig and the seat, she’d have melted right into the floor. “Wh-what was that?”

“Me. Us. That’s what I felt when I first touched you...when I always touch you.”

“Okay...okay, that’s....okay. I’ll need a minute to process that.”

Tig unhooked her safety belt and pulled her over into his lap. “No you don’t. I’ll refer your train of thought to what happened the last time you said that. You’ll do all your thinking and processing right where I can see you. Come,
shareek hayat.
We’ve got a flight to catch.”

“Tig?”

“What?”

“Nothing, just wanted to refer your train of thought to what happened the first time we met on a plane.”

Epilogue

O
ne Year Later

“Name and documents, please?”

“Dinah Wahid.”

“Thank you. Here is your flight information. Oh, Vegas! You know what they say. Is this your first trip?”

“Yep. I’ve been looking forward to it for awhile.”

“Ah, well, you’ll never be the same.” The desk attendant typed in a few more keystrokes and frowned. “I’m so sorry. If you’ll hand that back, there seems to be a problem. Wait. Yes. Fixed. Okay, here is your first class boarding pass. I see that a Mr. Wahid has just cancelled.”

Dinah’s necklace chimed against the counter as she reached for the paperwork. “Yes, he had to handle some business at the house. He hates airports. Loves flying, oddly enough.”

“I understand completely. Lovely charm necklace, by the way.”

“Thank you, so much. It’s a gift from my husband. Each charm means the world to me.”

“A bell and a genie’s lamp? And is that one of those chocolate diamonds?”

“I never leave home without them.”

“No luggage?”

“I travel light.”

Dinah received a private escort through security and priority boarding at the gate. As the plane got ready for takeoff, the flight attendant stopped by her seat. “Mrs. Wahid? We have your husband on the manifest, but I don’t recall seeing him board.”

I wish the love of my life and desire of my heart out of his lamp.

“I’m right here.”

And so, he was.
