“Well, for one thing,” Jenny said, “my mother and I are going to move into a house of our own pretty soon. It's really nice, a lot like this one exceptâ”
There was a squeak from the top of the stairs. Jenny looked up into the shadows and saw a mouse as big as a horse crouched on the top step. It was nibbling a slab of cheese the size of a bucket.
“âexcept for one very important difference,” Jenny said softly. She switched off the hall light and hurried out after Mr. Barkin into the dark Halloween night. “It's not haunted.”
