Concerning Retaliation

 "You have heard that it was said, '
An eye for an eye
and a tooth for a tooth.'

But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;

and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well;

if any one forces you
to go one mile, go with him two miles.

Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.

Love for Enemies

 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall
love your neighbor
and hate your enemy.'

But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
⁴⁸
You, therefore, must be perfect
, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Concerning Almsgiving

Beware of practicing
your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

give alms
, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward.

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Concerning Prayer

 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward.

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is
in secret
; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Concerning Fasting

 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward.

anoint your head
and wash your face,

that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Concerning Treasures

 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust

The Sound Eye

The eye is the lamp
of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light;

but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Serving Two Masters

 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and

Do Not Be Anxious

 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?

are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin;

Judging Others

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye?

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Profaning the Holy

dogs
what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you.

Ask, Seek, Knock

Ask, and it will be given you
; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?

The Narrow Gate

the narrow gate
; for the gate is wide and the way is easy,

For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

False Prophets

false prophets
, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?

So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit.

A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.

Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Thus you will know them by their fruits.

Concerning Self-Deception

 "Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'

Hearers and Doers

like a wise man
who built his house upon the rock;

and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

centurion
came forward to him, begging him

and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress."

And he said to him, "I will come and heal him."

But the centurion answered him, "
Lord, I am not worthy
to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it."
