Uncle Roy sat in the center of the extended table at the front of the room and looked down the row of commissioners to his left, then to the right. “Anyone have any questions for either of these young men?”
No one spoke. A couple shook their heads.
“Okay then, what’s your pleasure, gentlemen? Do we help Jackson go find his mother—by the way, also my favorite niece—or not? Please show by raising your hands. For.” He checked both ways. “And against?”
Five to four voted in favor. Seemed his uncle didn’t have quite the pull Jackson thought, but at least they agreed to give him supplies and safe passage to the south bank of the Sulphur.
On the way out to the wagon, Aria grabbed his arm. She pulled him toward her, kissed his cheek, then spoke softly into his ear. “Whatever happens, Jackson, never forget that I love you.”
