, 1540–1612. In citing this name, the author has knowingly committed an anachronism. Francisco Pe

a is the specialist in canonical law whom the Holy See charged, in the sixteenth century, with producing the new edition of The Inquisitor’s Manual by Nicholas Eymerich.

Philip the Fair
, 1268–1314. The son of Philip III (known as Philip the Bold) and Isabelle of Aragon. With his consort Joan of Navarre, he had three sons who would all become kings of France – Louis X (Louis the Stubborn), Philip V (Philip the Tall) and Charles IV (Charles the Fair). He also had a daughter, Isabelle, whom he married to Edward II of England. Philip was brave and an excellent war leader, but he also had a reputation for being inflexible and harsh. It is now generally agreed, however, that perhaps that reputation has been overstated, since contemporary accounts relate that Philip the Fair was manipulated by his advisers, who flattered him while mocking him behind his back.
   Philip the Fair is best known for the major role he played in the suppression of the Knights Templar, but he was above all a reforming king whose objective was to free the politics of the French kingdom from papal interference.

Prostitution
was reasonably well tolerated as long as it stayed within the limits imposed by the powers that be and religion. The canonical lawyers of the thirteenth century conceded that it was not immoral in certain circumstances, as long as the woman ‘engaged in it only out of necessity, and did not derive any enjoyment from it’. In towns ‘pleasure girls’ had to live in particular districts and wear certain identifiable clothes. These attitudes to prostitution might seem contradictory. But when the mentality of the day is considered, they do make sense. For in those days men had many more options than women, and it was recognised, although not necessarily publicly, that women only fell into prostitution because they had no choice. So although the Church regarded prostitutes as sinners, it also considered men who married them to be doing a good deed. Prostitutes could be ‘washed’ of their old lives if they married or joined a convent. The rape of a prostitute was considered a crime and punished as such.

Robert le Bougre
, also known as Robert the Small, was possibly Bulgarian in origin. He originally embraced Catharism and acceded to the highest rank and became an expert in that faith. But he later converted to Catholicism and became a Dominican monk. Gregory IX (1227–1241) valued him for his extraordinary ability to expose heretics. He seemed capable of trapping even the most skilled at concealment. In 1235 he was appointed Inquisitor General of Charité-sur-Loire, after his predecessor Conrad de Marbourg was assassinated, and was then responsible for cruel mistreatment and horrifying torture. The Archbishops of Sens and Rheims, among others, scandalized by the accounts that were reaching their ears, protested against Robert’s behaviour. After the first written report on the methods used by Robert, he was stripped of his powers in 1234. Yet he returned to favour in August of the following year, and immediately took up his ‘amusements’ again. It was not until 1241 that he was definitively removed from power and imprisoned for life.

Roman de la Rose
. A long allegorical poem written by two authors in two stages. Guillaume de Lorris started writing the love song of a courtier in around 1230. However, the part written by Jean de Meung between 1270 and 1280 is much more ironic, not to say cynical and misogynistic, with some barely disguised licentiousness. Jean de Meung did not hold back from attacking the mendicant orders by creating the character of a monk, named ‘The Pretender’.

Saisset, Bernard
,?–1311. The first Bishop of Pamiers. Very unwisely, he tried to challenge the legitimacy of Philip the Fair’s claim to the French throne, going as far as to hatch a plot to install the Comte de Foix as sovereign in Languedoc. Saisset refused to appear at his trial before the King, preferring to rely on the support of Boniface VIII to save him. In the end Philip the Fair exiled Saisset, who died in Rome.

Valois, Charles de
, 1270–1325. Philip the Fair’s only full brother.
The King showed Charles a somewhat blind affection all his life and conferred on him missions that were probably beyond his capabilities. Charles de Valois, who was father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and son-in-law to kings and queens, dreamed all his life of his own crown, which he never obtained.

Villeneuve, Arnaud de
, or Arnoldus de Villanova, c.1230–1311, born in Montpellier. Probably one of the most prestigious scientists of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Raised in Spain by Dominican monks, he became a doctor, astrologer, alchemist and lawyer of very determined character who sparked controversy and did not hesitate to launch attacks on the mendicant orders. He only escaped the clutches of the Inquisition because he cured Boniface VIII, who pardoned him for his ‘errors’. He remained the Pope’s doctor until his death, then became doctor to Benoît XI, and then Clément V, all the while working on secret missions for the King of Aragon.

Liturgical Hours

Aside from Mass – which was not strictly part of them – ritualised prayers, as set out in the sixth century by the Regulation of Saint Benoît, were to be said several times a day. They regulated the rhythm of the day. Monks and nuns were not permitted to dine before nightfall, that is until after vespers. This strict routine of prayers was largely adhered to until the eleventh century, when it was reduced to enable monks and nuns to devote more time to reading and manual labour.

Matins
: at 2.30 a.m. or 3 a.m.

Lauds
: just before dawn, between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Prime
: around 7.30 a.m., the first prayers of the day, as soon as possible after sunrise and just before Mass.

Terce
: around 9 a.m.

Sext
: around midday.

None
: between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

Vespers
: at the end of the afternoon, at roughly 4.30 p.m. or 5 p.m., at sunset.

Compline
: after vespers, the last prayers of the day, sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Measurements

It is quite difficult to translate some measurements to their modernday equivalents, as the definitions varied from region to region.

League
: about 2 ½ miles (4 kilometres).

Ell
: about 45 inches (114 centimetres) in Paris, 37 inches (94 centimetres) in Arras.

Foot
: as today, 12 inches (30 centimetres).

Ounce
: as today, about 28 grams.
