Notes
In this volume, as in
The National Dream
, I have tried to arrange the notes in such a way that the narrative flow will not be interrupted for the lay reader while, at the same time, the scholarly researcher can, without too much difficulty, establish the sources of my material. For this reason I have not followed the usual method of sprinkling the text with small numbers – a practice that I find irritating. I have also discarded another annoying tradition – that of combining the bibliography with the notes and using
op. cit
. for all but the first reference to any work. It is maddening for a researcher to struggle back through all the
op. cits
. in his search for the original citation. In the abbreviated notes that follow, the scholar can always go directly to the bibliography.
I have tried to give a source for every quotation in the book and, in addition, for facts that are not self-evident and for anecdotes that may be disputed.
