“Indeed I am,” Ronan said, appearing at her side and taking her hand. He kissed the ringless fingers of her left hand.

If he considered badgering her to move in with him progress towards marriage, then he was working on it. She didn’t. Though her apartment here in Asheville was only slightly more personalized than a hotel room, she insisted on clinging to it.
She and Ronan had exchanged visits. They spoke on the phone often and, of course, there was their bond. No matter how far apart they were, she always felt close to him. Sure, she could give in and move in with him. Her work usually involved travel so the location of her home was of little consequence.

But she wasn’t willing to give in on this point. He’d promised her forever. Though the bond was permanent, she still wanted the human equivalent. She knew Ronan would propose in his own time and she was willing to wait. He simply needed to understand that she wasn’t willing to live with him without a wedding ring.

Ronan squeezed her hand, bringing her attention back to him. He dropped to one knee in front of her. Nikita shoved at his broad shoulders. “Stop joking around. It wasn’t funny the last three times.” Every so often he liked to almost propose. He didn’t know how close she’d come to slapping him the last time. Which was only last night. He’d arrived at her apartment shortly before dinner. When she’d answered the knock on her door, she’d opened it to find him on one knee with one hand behind his back. He’d pulled out a bouquet of pink tiger lilies. But no engagement ring.

“Nikita,
I know how much family and tradition mean to you. So before I could propose to you, I wanted to ask for your family’s blessing.” Behind him Mama Skye, Meadow and even Mystique nodded. Tears were forming in all three women’s eyes. “I love you, baby. Will you marry me?” He opened a small black box. Inside was a three carat round diamond that caught the light and dazzled the observer.

There was only one answer she could give though she was
sorely tempted to return some of his teasing. Nikita smiled down at him. “Yes.”

Ronan slipped the ring onto her finger. As he stood, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her soundly.

“I can’t believe you’re not crying,” Imani said, sniffing and wiping at her eyes.

“Nikita never cries,” Mystique informed her, drying her face with a tissue.

Ronan’s lips curved in a secretive smile. His eyes began to glow but he was angled so that only Nikita could see. “You didn’t cry today, my little Spartan, but you’ll cry tears of joy the day you hold our son in your arms.”

Nikita recognized his words for the future prediction that they were. So three years later, when their son Ronan Douglas McKinley was born she didn’t even try to hold back the happy tears as his father placed him in her arms.
Besides, her husband’s eyes were also suspiciously bright.
