Another voice. ‘He’s done a bunk.’
The man in uniform stands over us. ‘Come on out. Anyone speak English.’
‘Yes.’
‘Come out quietly. Tell the others.’ He moves to stand over Hamid who is lying very still. ‘You! Get up.’ He tries to move him with his black boot. ‘Barry, call for a doctor. I think this one’s dead.’

MAUREEN DUFFY
is a notable contemporary British poet, playwright and novelist. To date she has published thirty works, including six volumes of poetry. Her
Collected Poems, 1949–84
appeared in 1985. Her work has often used Freudian ideas and Greek myth as a framework.
