“All aboard the Trans-Seemsberian Express! This train will make the following station stops: Seemsberia, Obscurity, the Outskirts, and Beyond! All aboard!”

A few tired workers shambled off the wooden benches and dragged their heavy bags up the steps. Most the Conductor recognized as Thought Chippers—those who toiled in the unforgiving heat of Contemplation—but he was quite sure that the old guy in the dust-covered hat and beard was a Hope prospector. By the despairing look on his face, today’s dig hadn’t gone so well.

“That’s all of ’em, Tommy.” The Conductor gave his engineer the nod, then hopped on the bottom stair. “Let’s move her out!”

Like some ancient lumbering beast, the last remaining steam-powered train in The Seems dragged itself into motion. Smoke belched from its stacks, pistons and coupling rods squealed, and with a final blow of the whistle, the Trans-Seemsberian Express slowly vanished into the night . . .

Leaving seemingly no one behind.

“That was nifty.” A man’s voice harshly split the silence, emanating from a dark alcove beside an out-of-order vending machine. “But totally unnecessary.”

There was no response but the moan of a distant desert wind.

“I assure you, we are quite alone.”

“None of us is alone,” replied the voice of a woman, from the other side of the tracks. “Least of all out here.”

Someone dressed in a hooded cowl emerged from behind a rusty handcar and began to make her way across the rails. The man she was approaching slipped from the safety of the shadows and lowered a sturdy hand to help her up to the platform.

“I should’ve known it would be you,” said Sophie Temporale, pulling back the hood to reveal her flowing gray hair. “In my heart, I think I already did.”

“Was I that obvious?” asked the man who now called himself Triton. Gone was the digital mask that had kept him shrouded during their previous conversation, replaced by a face and voice that the Time Being knew all too well.

“All this cloak-and-dagger stuff is right out of your playbook,” she said. “Not to mention the backroom politics.”

“When you are the hunted, you make do with whatever room you can find . . . be it attic, basement, or rooftop garden.”

Triton led her to the westernmost portion of the station, where the Tracks ended in huge rubber stoppers that kept the Trains of Thought from careening off-rails. Unlike Sophie, he was dressed in jeans, hiking boots, and a warm hunting jacket to protect him from the winds that howled across the desert. The desert he hoped she would enter with him tonight.

“Have you given any more thought to my offer?” he asked.

“I have.”

“And?”

“I’ve decided to accept.”

The leader of The Tide clenched a fist to suppress any visible signs of excitement. Now that the Time Being was on board, the others would follow suit, and there was literally nothing to stop his plan from coming to fruition.

“Excellent.”

Triton smiled and pointed to the Middle of Nowhere, where things like Time, Nature, and Reality quickly lost their meaning. Way, way out there in the shifting sands, just barely visible beneath the starless sky, was the glow of what could only be a campfire . . .

“Then follow me.”

Appendix B

Time Is of the Essence

The production of Time in The Seems is a dangerous and intricate process. It relies primarily upon the mining of a series of minerals infused with an energy or “Essence” that causes things around them to age at a specific rate. These minerals are referred to as: Firsts, Seconds, and Thirds.

The shells of Firsts are soft and hold very little Essence, while Thirds are nearly indestructible and, should the surface be cracked, contain enough to obliterate both The World and The Seems. Once these orbs are harvested, they are encased in Time-resistant glass and flooded with water from the Stream of Consciousness to safely extract the Essence.
