The remarkable convergence of Saddam Hussein, Nicolae Ceauşescu, Sarkis Soghanalian, Nixon, Mitchell, and Spiro Agnew—who represented the Saudis in the uniform deal—delivered an irresistible storyline:

overstated the value of the deal by $100 million. PBS denounced “Richard Nixon and his friends supplying Romanian uniforms to Iraq,” when in fact Nixon had nothing to do with the actual deal. Nixon biographer Stephen Ambrose hinted darkly, and without substantiation, that the deal bore some connection to the profitable sale of Nixon’s New York town house to the Syrian government; a few paragraphs later, Ambrose conceded there was “no proof that Nixon did more than write a couple of letters for Brennan and Mitchell, who were men who had served him loyally and well, men to whom he owed many favors.” And liberal essayist Sidney Blumenthal repeated the false claim about the Syrians.
