“Would that work?” Trevor asked.

“I don’t think hunters have the kind of CSI equipment that you see on TV. They’ll probably buy it.”

“Before more hunters show up anyway,” Trevor said.

“Yeah. They always do.”

Phillip stood there for a minute, suddenly at a loss for words. “Do you, uh, remember what I told you when we were coming back? When the other alphas were bringing you to the pond?”

“Before I passed out I guess?”

Phillip nodded.

“Don’t remember much,” Trevor said with a shrug, and in the darkness, Phillip could see the way those glowing eyes flickered to him from time to time, shyly and unsure. “But, uh, unless I was hallucinating, I’m pretty sure you were telling me something important.”

“Something?” Phillip prompted.

Trevor cleared his throat. When he reached over for one of the bottles of water on his night stand, Phillip hurriedly picked it up and put it in his hand.

When their skin touched, their eyes met. “Do you remember me telling you that I love you?”

Trevor’s throat worked in a hard swallow. His response was so faint that Phillip barely heard it. “Yes.”

Phillip put both of his hands around Trevor’s and that damn water bottle he was holding. “I meant it. I really did. I don’t know what I would’ve done if you had died on me. When I saw you go down and you didn’t get up…”

Phillip’s voice gave out on him, and he wished he was much stronger than he was. The truth of the matter was that even though he had run away and nearly gone wild after Helen was taken from him, if Trevor had died, he would have gone wild. No questions asked.

“If you had left me like that, I would’ve been no better than that wolf the alphas put down. I wouldn’t have been able to come back from that.”

He noted the shine of tears in Trevor’s glowing eyes, and he reacted similarly. He sniffled and wiped his eyes. “Don’t do that. You’re making me cry.”

“Right, like I’m supposed to be able to turn it off,” Trevor said with a laugh between sobs.

It was natural that their mouths came together again, just as hard and just as full of want and love.

“You mean it?” Trevor asked when they separated.

“Of course I mean it,” Phillip said, pulling his face forward again.

Trevor pulled back again, a slight look of alarm in his eyes that had Phillip worried. “Wait a minute, what about your wife?”

Phillip relaxed a little, and he cupped Trevor’s cheeks. “She’s not my wife anymore. She hasn’t been since the day she died.”

“But her spirit―”

“Is gone. It’s just you and me now.”

Trevor laughed again through his tears, and then they held each other, hugging over his bed until Trevor finally managed to pull Phillip in of it.

“You sure?” Phillip asked. This wasn’t about sex, but he didn’t want to smother the man when he was still recuperating from his injuries. The last thing he wanted was to fall asleep next to the man, just to wake up in the morning and find himself half rolled on top of him and Trevor suffocating or something.

But that was stupid. He was being paranoid.

“I want to hold you,” Trevor said.

How could he say no? Reminding himself of his paranoia, Phillip allowed himself to sink down into the comfortable space that he was from now on claiming as his own. The right side of Trevor’s bed.

Then something poked him in the back, and he reached around to grab the offending object.

It was the book
Dracula
, the one he’d picked up for Trevor. The edge of the spine had been digging into his skin. He looked over at the other man and smiled. “Light reading?”

“Tried to get through a couple of pages, but to be honest I got tired, so I just kind of kept it next to me.”

Phillip was touched. He flipped the pages and noticed several of them were loose and falling out. He didn’t want to ruin the book any more than it already was, however, so he set it aside on the nightstand and proceeded to snuggle down.

“Nice here,” Phillip said, turning to the other man.

Trevor already had his hands on the back of Phillip’s hair and neck and was pulling him close. “Nicer when you’re here. I love you.”

Phillip kissed his mate in the dark, saying hello to his future happiness.
