Turner stepped back to sit with Kim, and the ceremony began. It turned out that the drunk in the tank with Charlie, a man named Lloyd, was actually a preacher, and now he’d joined AA, Marci had enlisted him to do the ceremony.

She was so kindhearted. Always helping others get back on their feet.

“Friends and family, we’re here to witness the wedding ceremony of Marci Turner and Cade Muller.”

His words blurred until the moment when he asked if anyone objected to the ceremony.

Déjà vu of him dragging Marci away from her wedding with Pendergrass flashed back.

She squeezed his hand so hard he thought his fingers cracked.

“So if no one objects – ”

“I…” Kim squealed.

He and Marci  startled and turned toward her sister. Surely Kim wasn’t going to stop the wedding.

“Kim?” Marci said.

Kim clutched her belly. “Never mind, I just had a contraction. I’m sure it’s just a Braxton Hicks.”

A murmur of panicked whispers rumbled through the room as Austin rushed to Kim. “Kim, Honey?”

Kim threw up her hand, the flowers trembling. “Go ahead. It’s probably a false alarm.”

Marci looked worried, but motioned for Lloyd to continue. “Cade Muller, do you take –

“Oww…” Kim squealed again.

“Oh, my god, Kim,” Marci whispered.

“Go on, marry them!” Kim shouted as Austin helped her to a chair.

The ceremony blurred as Kim had one contraction after another while they said their vows.

“I now pronounce you man and wife,” Lloyd said. “You may kiss the bride.”

Cade swept Marci into his arms and claimed her mouth with his. Passion drove him to take it deep, but suddenly Kim’s wail jolted them apart.

“My water just broke!” Kim shouted.

Cade glanced at Marci and knew what they had to do. “Get her into the squad car. Quick.”

He grabbed Marci’s hand, and they rushed toward the limo.

“Enjoy the party!” Marci shouted. “We’ll be back.”

Georgia jumped in the squad car to drive Austin and Kim while he and Marci slid into the limo and drank champagne on the way to the hospital.

“I can’t think of a better day than our wedding for my niece or nephew to be born,” Marci said as she planted a wet kiss on his cheek.

He agreed and swept her into his arms, then pulled the privacy divider down as the limo raced toward the hospital, and once again Marci’s guests enjoyed the reception without her.

*~*~*~*

Marci straightened her tousled wedding dress as the limo pulled up in front of the hospital. She and Cade had just consummated their marriage in the back of the car!

Exhilarated and happier than she’d ever been in her life, she clutched Cade’s hand as he helped her from the limo.

They raced in and saw Kim being wheeled to the labor room. Her parents ran in, both looking ragged and terrified and …thrilled.

“Sorry about the reception,” her mother said.

“It’s okay,” Marci said as she imagined her guests enjoying her champagne and food. Just like before.

Except this time she was happy and not in jail.

But then the pacing began.

They alternated staring at the clock, sipping coffee and playing a guessing game about the baby’s sex.

Finally at midnight, Austin appeared, his hair sticking out, his eyes wide with shock.

“Is everything okay?” Marci’s father asked.

Her mother grabbed Austin’s arm. “How’s Kim?”

“Is it a boy or a girl?”  Marci cried.

Austin swayed on his feet and Cade caught him. “Man, are you all right?”

“It’s twins,” Austin said. “We have one of each.”

The room erupted into cheers and hugs and tears. Marci’s own happiness overflowed as they waited to see her sister and her babies.

“They’re going to need a fun aunt,” she whispered to Cade. “I mean I love my sister and her husband, but someone has to liven things up.”

“I agree,” Cade said.

With a nuzzle against her neck, he drew her into his arms and kissed her again, the promise of tomorrow and forever-after on his lips.
