He stayed still. He stopped breathing heavy. His body went tense. He backed up and gave me a small smile as he exited the bed, “Be right back.” He leaned over and kissed my lips softly and then left the room.

I covered up and turned onto my side. He seemed conflicted. He hadn’t hit me ten times. It’d only been half that. Was he too excited to go that far or was it actually a turn-off? Maybe it was a bit of both.

Dare

I sat out back, away from the two guards, and I smoked a cigarette. I felt tormented. I had almost slapped her face, in the moment of passion remembering Chen’s words and thinking that she’d like it but I couldn’t fucking do it. I couldn’t slap her face. I liked the submissiveness, it was hot. I liked the spanking, too, especially liked how she responded to it. But right now I was feeling a little gross because some of what we’d done made me think about her being abused. I never wanted her to know that I felt this. I didn’t want her to remember any of the abuse, didn’t want her to associate anything she and I did together with anything she’d done with anyone else. When I got off on slapping her it flashed that someone else doing the same would mean her coming hard, not fighting it. Then I’d feel like I was sick in the head for getting off on it. I wanted to give her what she needed but I also wanted her whole. I wanted her to be mine. But I didn’t want her to stay in that place where she got off on pain. If I did what the sick fucks who hurt her did to her and she got off on it, what did that make me? How was taking their advice on how to get her off from a founding partner of the place that also fucked her, who probably helped or gave orders to fucking break her gonna help either of us? I wish I’d never read that report and that Chen had never said those things to me. Things were pretty fuckin’ screwed up in my head.

I went back to bed and she was asleep. I pulled her to me and held her tight. It took me a long time to crash. There was a shit load of crap in my life right now and part of me wanted to say
Fuck It
and take her and just fuck off somewhere away from all of it.

Part of me thought about just taking off alone and asking my brother to watch out for her until we could fake her death. Maybe I
should
take off and try to forget her. Despite telling myself that though, I didn’t let go of her. I fell asleep holding onto her for dear life.

In the morning when I opened my eyes she was beside me, watching me sleep.

“Mornin’” I said.

“Hi,” she smiled.

“Would you mind goin’ down and making us some coffee, baby?” I stretched.

“If I refuse, would you spank me again?” she gave me a mischievous look and my face split into a grin.

“Do you
want
another spanking?” I asked.

“Maybe,” she snuggled in and then gave me a smile.

“How about you make me coffee and I’ll reward you for doing it instead of punishing you for not doing it?”

“Okay,” she smiled, “Can I get an advance?”

I rolled her and got on top and she wrapped her legs around my waist. I grabbed a handful of her hair, loving the curls and loving the gorgeous smile on her sleepy face, “You’re beautiful.” I said.

“You’re beautiful,” she returned.

“You’re mine,” I slid my cock inside her. Who’d I been trying to kid last night? There was no way I’d give her up. Broken, not broken, she was mine.

“You’re mine,” she said fiercely and her eyes were full of fire when she said that, which stoked my fire
real
good. I grabbed her tight and held on while I gave her that advance on the coffee. That advance was a good one and it was a good thing, too, because it’d have to last me a while.

Hours later I was getting antsy. I didn’t like that Chen hadn’t caught Jason Frost yet. Tommy was getting his counselor to fly in from the UK for Lisa because she hadn’t budged yet. He said things were tense with him and Tia, that they weren’t really speaking to one another and he admitted to me that he felt like he was unraveling. Add to that the fact that my phone was ringing off the hook with work shit, shit that I’d been neglecting because of all the drama I’d been entrenched in.

I was in and out of the cabin on the phone, texting, and trying to deal with a dozen things at once. I was in a bad fucking mood.

As I headed out the door with a new pack of smokes I heard Angel say, “Maybe you shouldn’t smoke so much.”

“Yeah and maybe it was better when you asked permission before you spoke,” I snapped.

Her expression dropped, her shoulders sagged, and I wished I could snatch it back, “Angel, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it.” I rushed to her and pulled her tight against me, “Forgive me?”

She shook her head a little, “No, Sir.” She said it with pain rather than venom.

My heart hit my gut. I deserved that. I deserved the ‘Sir’ because I’d just treated her like
they
treated her. I scooped her up, took her upstairs, and laid her down in bed and climbed in beside her. I caressed her face, “I’ll never say anything like that again. Ever. Promise. So sorry, baby.”

Her eyes were cold. But she didn’t pull away. It killed me that she would never pull away from me even if she wanted to but like a selfish prick I took advantage of that sad fact and held her close to me.

“You’re allowed to be mad at me,” I whispered, “Go ahead, pull away. Call me a fucking bastard. Smack me in the face.”

She stared at the ceiling, hugging herself while I held her.

“If I told you to spread your legs for me right now you’d do it, wouldn’t you?” I growled in her ear, “You’d do it despite the fact that I just cut you deep with my words. You’d do it and you’d get wet for me, wouldn’t you?”

Her lower lip started to tremble.

“Baby, you have every right to be pissed at me. You have every right to call me out on my shit. I need someone to do that, you know? Call me out when I’m being a prick. Tell me to fucking cool it. I need that.”

She choked on a sob but held it in, best as she could.

“You are supposed to be everything I need, Angel, and I need
that
. I need you to be real with me. I need you to dig deep and find the girl you used to be and show her to me. I am crazy about all of what I’ve had from you so far. You’re in here,” I thumped on my chest with a fist, “I want the rest of you, too.”

“Can you please leave me alone for a while, Dare?”

That was a start. It wasn’t yelling and screaming and pounding her fists on my chest out of anger, frustration, and pain, but it was a start.

“Sure.” I let go of her and kissed her forehead, “Again, I’m sorry. I really mean that.”

She shook her head at me, pain in her eyes. I left the room but without looking back I said, “I will do my best to keep giving you what you need. I need you to give me what I need, too, baby. This relationship needs to go both ways.”

I stepped outside but didn’t light the cigarette. I grabbed a long stick from a brush pile and a hunting knife from the nearby toolshed and started to whittle it. It was a skill my Icelandic grandfather taught me. It’d been a while but years ago it’d always been something that relaxed me. Maybe taking it up again would help me quit smoking. She was right. I’d been smoking a pack and a half a day the last few days and I was wheezing.

I sat for a while outside and whittled and then when I went back in and found her reading a magazine up in the bedroom. She didn’t look at me but I felt her go tense when I stopped at the foot of the bed, about to talk to her.

My phone rang. It was Zack.

“You ready for this?”

“Yeah man.” I sat and braced.

“Gan Chen is in the hospital. Multiple gunshot wounds. Not sure if he’ll survive. His body guards are dead. You out there in the woods with just two guards, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Your father’s house might be better. You should probably try to get there. You’re too vulnerable.”

“Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck!” I winced. I looked at her. She looked alarmed.

“I think you need all the info I have, man.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“Lay it on me.” I left the room, heading down the stairs and out the back deck.

“Alright. Your girl’s mother’s name is Felicia Mooney, father’s name David Macleod. Sister, Holly Mooney. You want your girl’s name or you still waiting for her to tell you. If you come in contact with Frost there’s a chance he’ll use her name, anyway.”

“Fuck.” I didn’t know what to do but made a snap decision, “Lay it on me.”

“Alright, her name’s Angie Macleod. She was born in South Carolina but at 13 she moved to Juneau to live with her mother after her father died suddenly in a work accident. Mother had Holly by another guy. Angie’s father had custody of her from age 4 but the mother got custody after he died. ”

“Angie Macleod?” I whispered, in complete shock.

“Yeah.”

“Angie?” I repeated.

“Yeah. Angelica Elizabeth Macleod.”

“Angelica?”

“Yep.”

Holy fuck.

“Angie graduated high school early. Smart girl. Mother’s a raging alcoholic and pill popper, still in Juneau. Before your girl left for her teaching job she arranged for the sister to live with the paternal grandmother because the mother was abusive. Angie practically raised the sister. But…oh shit, we just got a lead on where Jason is. I’ll call you back.” He disconnected.

I took a minute staring out at the woods beyond the deck. I heard noise in the house so I stepped in. She was at the sink filling the tea kettle.

“Angie,” I said. She spun around and it took a second to penetrate. When it did, her eyes were wide. Her mouth dropped open.

“Yeah, I know.” I said, “We need to talk. There are some things going on. Gan Chen and a few of his people are here to try to catch Jason because Jason wanted to buy you and got pissed when he found out you were sold to me. But Gan got shot. He’s in the hospital. Zack told me your name because---”

Her hand clapped over her mouth and she started to tremble so I stopped talking, got to her, got my arms around her, and she shrieked, ducking to get under my arms and away and then she ran around to the other side of the table.

She pointed at me, “No. Stay back. I have to go save her.”

I stopped and put my hands up, “Baby, listen…”

She backed up until her back was to the door and then her hand went to the doorknob.

“We have to talk, Angel. I know some of your story. I need the rest.”

“Oh God!” A sob tore out of her mouth. She turned the knob.

“Don’t, baby. Come here.”

She darted out and started to make a run for it. She ran toward the woods.

Fuck! I started running for her. Then I heard a gunshot. It whizzed by me. What the fuck? I heard another shot. Angel was down. I dropped to the ground. I saw movement from the corner of my eye. He was on the other side of my car. Where the fuck were the security guards? Thank God I was still packing; I fired my gun and clipped him on the shoulder. I ran for him and he shot but missed me. I shot again and caught him in the face. He dropped. I ran and then I was standing over him. He was Asian. He was dead. I shot him again to be sure. Then I ran for her, watching in case there was anyone else. She was lying on her stomach on the grass.

“I guess your angel is getting her wings,” she said when I leaned over and examined her. She was shot in the calf. She’d be okay.

“Not yet you aren’t, let’s go.” I carefully lifted her up and carried her to my Explorer. She passed out.

Chapter 11

Angel

I woke up in the hospital. I was on an exam table and they were telling Dare they were going to take me into surgery to get the bullet out but that I would be okay.

The nurse and doctor started to talk to me, noticing I was awake and I started to feel the blood thundering in my ears, the panic setting in. He was sitting beside me. He had my hand in his and he gave me a look, a look that snapped me into behaved slave mode. But it felt like I was splitting in two. Slave girl and scared girl who needed to fucking save her sister from the fiery pits of hell.

The nurse and doctor left the exam room and Dare said, “Hey.”

My eyes widened and I started to feel the panic rise. “No. Chill out,” he leaned over me, seizing my wrists, “You can’t freak out, baby. You freak out and they put you in the psych ward. Chill the fuck out.”

“I gotta go, I gotta go. Holly. Holly.”

I realized my throat was naked and I started hyperventilating

“It’s gone. It’s gone. My collar, Oh my God!”

“Baby!” His voice got very stern, “Chill out now before things go really fucking wrong.”

Dare

They’d taken her collar and other jewelry off in prep for surgery to remove the bullet but I had it all in my pocket. She was freaking the fuck out and if I didn’t get her chilled out they’d notice her behavior and undoubtedly commit her. I did what I had to do then so that I could keep her settled. I couldn’t hold her down and rub it out here in the hospital room so I got my mouth against her ear, “Angel do you hear me? This is your fucking Master telling you to calm. The fuck. Down. Now.”

Angel

I froze.

“Deep breaths,” he ordered. He grabbed my hands and held them over my head.

I took a slow and deep breath. And then another.

“Again. Keep doing it. Keep breathing.”

I complied.

“I didn’t want to keep going backwards, baby, don’t want to keep taking you back to what you used to be but if that’s what it takes to calm you the fuck down right now, so be it. I’m your Master and you fucking behave and do every single thing I tell you to do. Got me?”

He transferred my wrists to one hand and then his other hand cupped me between the legs, “Be a good girl.” He commanded and exerted pressure with his middle two fingers against me for a second and my body went lax, “I can’t give you what you need right now but be good and you’ll get it soon.”

I stayed still, willing myself to breathe another breath. And then another. And then another.

A few minutes passed and he let go of between my legs but he kept hold of my wrists, both crossed above my head and braced under his other palm.

We heard someone coming in so he let me go but gave me a warning look. It was time for surgery.

Dare

All we needed was for her to have some freak out in the hospital and them commit her. Then if other Kruna scumbags got wind of it she’d be in serious danger, meaning we all would be as I would not hesitate to go Rambo on them if they so much as messed up a single curl on her beautiful head again.

The two security guys at Eddy and Luc’s cabin had been gunned down and one was dead. The other we got in to the hospital. Of the gunmen, I killed one but the second gunman had been injured, not killed, by the security guard that had died and as I drove us to the hospital I’d called Nino, who was already on his way. He’d gotten there, got the injured guy into the toolshed and then got his brother there. Nino and Tino got creative and then got the guy talking and the guy sang like a canary.

Jason Frost was now in our custody. Tino, Nino, and a few of our guys got to his location and they got him to Tommy’s farm, locked him in one of the stalls in the horse barn. I hadn’t talked back to Zack yet but had texted him that Angel had been shot in the leg and that we were at the hospital, that we had Frost in custody. He replied with an “Okay. I’ll call you soon.”

Tommy’s counselor was due to arrive that day and would be staying at the house with the girls and was reportedly going to be working with Lisa. I texed Zack to send people to Alaska to scope out Angel’s family situation. Gan Chen was in critical condition but had made it out of surgery.

Angel

I was awake. The bullet was gone from my leg and there was a big bandage. Dare barely left my side and though he didn’t say much he had a fuming angry demeanor that kept me on high alert, kept me quiet, and kept me in slave mode, behaving myself.

A full day had passed since my surgery and he’d only ever stepped out of the room for about an hour, the longest he’d been away from me since I got shot, and while he was gone Tommy had sat in the room with me, watching me with a cold ‘don’t you dare try anything’ look on his face.

Dare came back.  Tommy stayed in the room but leaned against the door.

“You good?” Dare sat on the edge of the hospital bed.

I stared wide-eyed.

“I’m telling you baby, I need you to listen and stay calm. Be a good girl. Got me?”

I nodded.

“I’m getting you out of here today and taking you to my brother’s farm for a few days so you can recuperate. When we get there I’m going to update you on where things are at. In order for me to do that you need to listen and you need to behave so they’ll let you out of here. Got me?”

I nodded.

“Answer me.”

“Okay.”

“No, answer me properly.”

A tingle worked its way from my scalp to my nipples and then straight between my legs, “Yes, Master.”

“Good girl.”

From the corner of my eye I saw Dare’s brother shift uncomfortably from foot to foot and blow out a slow breath.

** ** **

We were at his brother’s farmhouse. I was in a double bed upstairs in the spare room. There was nothing else in the room. After a brief chat with the doctor where Dare did most of the talking he got me here and carried me upstairs and put me to bed, slept beside me, holding me close, and now it was the next day. I was awake, eating toast with PB & J in triangles that Dare had made me and I was drinking coffee. Then he started to talk to me.

“You okay?”

“Yes…” I hesitated. I didn’t know whether to call him Master or not.

He squeezed my hand reassuringly, “I’m sorry that I had to take you back to that time like that in there, Angel, but I couldn’t let you freak out like that in front of the doctors and nurses.”

“I know.” I wasn’t angry. It’d given me a sense of calm and I didn’t want to delve too deep into that but frankly, it was a sense of calm I could use right now. I just did what I needed to and let him worry about everything else. It was easy. I wanted it now because I had a feeling that whatever he was about to say would be big. I didn’t want to ask for it, though. It was time to put on my big girl pants.

He started talking,

“Hold it together now, ‘cuz this is big. You good?”

“I’m good.”

“Jason Frost was responsible for that. He tried to have me killed.”

I jolted but held myself together.

“No one is after your sister. Everyone is all on the same side right now and while that means me and my brother are on the same side as the bad guys, me and my guys apprehended Jason and took down his snipers. That sniper only meant to injure you. Frost wanted me dead, you delivered. He had login details for your tracker, which is how he found out you left Thailand. And how he found you here. He tried to kill Gan Chen. Chen is in the hospital recovering from multiple gunshot wounds. He’s gonna live.

I’ve now got Frost in a holding area. You wanna talk to him you can. You can think on that. He tried to buy you a number of times after his uncle died. He found out that you were recently sold and quietly lost his shit and began plotting so he could get his hands on you. He hired someone to take me out and deliver you. I took down the assassin. We caught another gunman and had him interrogated and led to finding Frost. We haven’t interrogated him yet. I haven’t gone there yet. Before I proceed I need answers. I need all the answers, baby.”

“He proposed to me. He…he…” I started to panic.

“Chill out, baby. I’ve got you.”

I scampered off the bed onto my knees, a little too hard for the sake of my leg wound, but I ignored the pain and wrapped myself around his leg. He started to stroke my hair and shhh’d me. Like this, at his feet, his hand on me, now I felt like he
had
me.

“I need a collar,” I whispered and his hand went into his pocket and he pulled out a box, “You’re not getting that blue collar back. I refuse to put it back on your throat. What about this necklace. Will it do?”

I glanced at it as he circled my throat with it. It was a thick silver choker with a heart pendant with a keyhole.

“It’s beautiful,” I whispered, “Thank you. But it’s not right.”

“Why?”

“It needs three strands. One means I’m available. Two means I’m booked to a patron or party. Three means I’m owned.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out two more necklace boxes and put them on me. One was a flat choker necklace with a bow pendant and the other was a longer necklace with charms, like a charm bracelet. It had a little horseshoe pendant, a tiny angel, and a little duck. He stroked my hair, playing with my curls, “We’ll figure something out. These okay for now?”

I leaned into his leg, “Yes. Thank you.” God he was sweet.

After a minute of more hair stroking he continued, “He can’t hurt you, he’s locked down. I had my liaison Stan tell the other powers that be about Chen’s injuries and that we have Frost. Chen said before that Frost and you have history and he suspected Frost was making a move so he came to meet with me. You need to fill me in, Angel. I need your story. I know you’ve been through a lot but I need details and I need them now so that I can figure out what to do to keep us safe. At this point the Kruna big wigs still think of Tommy and I as friends. That has to stay that way for now.”

“Dare, I… it’s so...”

“Please, baby. I need details. I need them now. I know it’s probably gonna break you to talk about this shit Angel but I’m here. I won’t let anything happen. You need to enlighten me so that I can deal with this shit. Give it all to me. Let me take care of you. I’ve got you. You break and I’ll help you get back together, okay my baby? It’s okay to break. I’m here. Trust me to look after you.” He leaned down and took my hand and got me to my feet. He kissed my forehead, “C’mon, let’s get into bed.”

He held me close. I slithered down to his belly and planted my cheek on it and stared up at him. He had such a gentle and caring look on his face. It was hitting me straight in the soul. He tucked my hair behind my ear and jerked his chin up, urging me to start. It took me a minute but I found my voice.

“I do trust you. I do.”

“Okay, baby. Go.” He jerked his chin up.

“I was having fun in Thailand. Teaching, hanging out with other teachers, some other expats my age. We hung out in this nightclub and a lot of Americans, Canadians, and Brits went there. That’s where I met Jason. He managed the club. He was handsome. He liked me. We started to date. He wanted to get serious like really fast. It freaked me out but we were having fun so I kept trying to keep it light. He was more serious than I was, though. This Thai woman who was the cleaning lady for the nightclub pulled me aside one day. She was always giving me weird looks and stuff and then one day Jason and I fell asleep in the office after the club closed. That’s the night he proposed. I laughed it off, thinking he was just drunk, and then he got emotional about it. I calmed him down with sex and we fell asleep. Anyway, the next morning he was in a mood because I hadn’t accepted and said he had to run an errand so I went to leave to go back to my place and the cleaning lady warned me. She told me that Jason’s family was involved in slavery and that I should steer clear.  She begged me not to out her. They didn’t know she spoke English so spoke freely enough around her to tip her off, I guess. She said she thought I was a nice girl and didn’t want to see me tied to that. So I tried to back off from Jase and then he proposed to me again, sensing I was pulling away. He was really desperate the second time. It was creepy. He was talking in riddles and saying things to the effect of that I’d be sorry if I didn’t pick him because that’d change everything.

It started to freak me out so I was gonna quit my job and get out of Thailand. I told no one. They must’ve been watching me because I got flagged at the airport, put in this little room, and the next thing I know I’m in that little room with Jase and his uncle, who I hadn’t met yet. They were trying to play things carefully with me, see what I knew. I told them I had an emergency back home and was just flying back temporarily and they didn’t buy it. The woman who warned me was brought in and I knew that they’d figured out she’d told me. Mr. Frost left me alone in the room with Jason and Jase tried to sweet talk me and obviously they weren’t convinced that I didn’t know anything so then his uncle took over and told Jason I was off limits, that they had to pull me in.  Jase freaked and grabbed the gun from a guard and shot the woman in the head who told me. Right in front of me. He pointed the gun to his uncle and his uncle talked him down but then overpowered him and pistol whipped him until he was knocked out and then took me. I tried not to break. I used to be so strong, but then they showed me….”
