I expected a smart remark, but he doesn’t respond. Instead he holds my gaze with his intense blue eyes. Something changes about his expression. He becomes very serious. He looks down at his plate and then brings his gaze up again and locks his eyes onto mine.
“I love you, Sofia,” he blurts out.
What did he just say?
Did he actually say what I thought he said?
“I’ve been in love with you since we left Paris, but I just wasn’t sure how to say it. I mean, we met under very particular circumstances. I nearly bit someone’s head off when Todd told me you had gone with a client to South America and that’s when I knew for sure I didn’t want to be without you,” he confesses, as he reaches for my hand.
I feel light-headed, as if the air has been sucked out of our room. I’m quite stunned by his words. So much so that I remain unable to speak and respond to his confession. I’ve been dreaming of this moment for months now and it’s happing right now.
“You’re too quiet. Okay, I see. Maybe you don’t feel the way I do...” His words trail off and I immediately panic because my inability to respond to his sweet confession is making him doubt.
“No, no, no,” I blurt out awkwardly.
“No, you don’t feel the same way I do?”
Compose yourself.
“Bryce, I’m stunned, shocked and elated. Well, there are about five hundred other feelings going through my body right now because you caught me totally off guard. I never expected this. I mean, I’ve loved you since the big gala, but I never imagined a man like you would feel the same way. I love you too, Bryce,” I say, on the verge of tears.
He gets up from his chair so quickly that it falls behind him. He takes a step toward me and towers over me with his presence.
“I fucking love you,” he yells.
Oh my God, is this really happening or am I dreaming?
Suddenly, reality brings me back down to earth and I think he notices the change in my mood. I bring my hands to my face, unable to deal with the uncertainty of our future together.
“What’s going on in your head, Sofia?” He wraps me in his arms and kisses my cheek so tenderly it’s as if a feather caresses me. I shake my head, unwilling to allow the words to escape my mouth, but he pressures me. “You’re closing up on me. Baby, talk to me.”
“Bryce, how can this possibly work between us?”
