“Josh here, talk to me.”
I laughed, “Hey, you—what’s up?”
There was silence… God, I dread silence. It makes me so much more anxious than what I already am.
“Hellooo?” I cooed.
Josh replied with a half hearted, “Oh, hey.”
“Are you ok, babyface?” I giggled anxiously.
“Nah, I’m not. Why haven’t you called me, Elle? I haven’t heard from you for like a week. I thought something must have happened to you. Why would you just leave me hanging like that?”
I paused in thought and watched the passing scenery speed up as the train pulled away from the station. “I’m really sorry, Josh. I just needed to get away and clear my head. I’ve been thinking a lot, about all sorts of things. Sorry I fell off the earth.”
His voice perked up a bit. “I’ve been thinking too…”
I bit my nail nervously as I took a seat. “Have you? Leaving me for an even older woman, are you?”
There was silence. “No. The opposite, actually…”
I laughed, “A younger woman? Well fair enough—I’m not getting any younger, I guess.”
He laughed, “Don’t be silly. I’ve been thinking about us…”
I gulped as my teeth ripped the top of my nail off.
Oh god. Please don’t say ‘us’
– I thought this was just meant to be a bonk. Often… but still
just
a bonk.
“Us?” I managed to say through my freak out.
“Yeah. You going away and me not hearing from you has made me realize stuff.”
What do I say? Tell me what to say!
I screamed in my mind. My mind came up with nothing.
Great, thanks, brain. Real helpful.
“I think I’m falling in…”
I cut him off mid sentence. He was a puppy. I didn’t want to crush him. I remember how many guys I had crushed on in my late teens. I didn’t even want to think about it, let alone hurt him. After all, it wasn’t love that he was feeling; it was just a big, old crush. Right?
I tried to sound normal, whatever that was. “Can you meet me, Josh? I think we need to have chat about things. What do you reckon?”
“Of course,” he said excitedly. “I really want to see you. It feels like forever! I’ve been practicing some of those Kama Sutra moves—my quads are killing me.”
I laughed at his honesty. “The mind boggles, Josh, it really does.”
“Can I pick you up at the train station? When are you coming back?”
“I just got on the train now, and it’s a long ride, so I’ll be getting in super late. How about you come and see me tomorrow for lunch—12:00 p.m.?”
“Ok great, I’ll see you then, sexy.”
Shit! Now you’ve done it
, my helpful mind scolded me, but somehow I managed to respond with a chirpy, “See you later, baby.”
I hung up the phone, feeling utter dread circumnavigate my stomach. How could I have been so thoughtless to not have even bothered talking to him about what we were. Explaining from the start that this was
just
sex. I thought he knew that. It’s not like when we were together we did anything much other than bonk. It had all seemed pretty clear cut to me. My mind wandered back to my words: “I don’t want this to turn into a habit;” and yet it did, and now I was in this predicament.
Where was granny and all her stupid photos now? They would have been the perfect distraction for my mind, away from the long journey ahead of me taking me straight back to reality via this metal, chugging box.
I stood in the light of the window.
Waiting.
Watching.
I looked up at the ticking clock hanging on the wall. Oh, how I hated that clock. The ticking was so loud, reminding me merrily as every second slipped by.
Shut up!
I thought. I
so
have to replace that clock.
It was now 1:05 p.m. and still there was no sign of Josh. Maybe he figured out that I was with someone else? I tried calling—he didn’t pick up.
Odd.
“Finally,” I muttered, feeling the dread return to my being as his black Lambo screamed around the corner roaring across the coble stones and revved aggressively out in front of my building. Talk about creating a scene—
why can’t you just ride a skateboard?
I shut my eyes, looking for some sort of divine strength within. I came up with jack all, and now I had run out of time. This was it, I had to face him and tell him in the kindest way possible that the bonking school was over—class dismissed.
I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror as I went to open the door. I looked tired. Nervous and tired. It would have been so much easier to have just sent him a text, but I couldn’t do that to him; I needed to see Josh one last time to tell him to his face.
I opened the door and managed to drag myself downstairs—I so didn’t want to see the look in Josh’s puppy dog eyes when I told him.
The Lambo sat there idling, its cylinders growling like a wild animal. I smirked as my mind drifted back to the first night we had met at the club—it sure was sex on wheels.
I’m going to miss that car,
I thought.
“Hello, darlin’!”
My entire body froze as my eyes flashed over towards the driver’s side where Daniel was stepping out of the Lambo.
“I’d like you to meet someone.”
The passenger door opened, and the first thing I saw was a head full of dirty blonde curls—the same curls I had run my fingers through multiple times right before we had sex.
Daniel smiled that beautiful, cheeky smile of his, grinning from ear to ear. “And this, darlin’, is my son! He’s a right rascal; I know you’re gonna love him.”
On the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next between Siena & Daniel?
