He couldn’t resist teasing her. “The part about spanking?”
“Don’t be an idiot! The part about marrying me. Do you want to or not?”
He chuckled, unable to remember laughing so much in a long time. “That depends.”
“Depends?”
“On if the ring fits.”
“What ring?”
“Damn! The ring!” He climbed off the bed, found his discarded jeans, and dug out a small jeweler’s box from a pocket. When he turned around, she was right behind him. “This ring.” He opened the box and held it out to her, grinning when she burst into tears and reached for it with trembling hands.
“On if we can elope.” He moved the box back and pulled the ring out while she held out her hand. “I told you in Maui I hate all that fancy wedding hassle. Won’t do it.”
“On if you think you can live for thirty or so years with a stubborn cowboy. Put up with him going back to school. Changing his whole life around.” He slid the ring on her finger. It was an almost perfect fit, and he was so relieved.
She wiped at her tears, but they kept right on flowing. “Can I make conditions, too?”
That wasn’t the answer he wanted, but he gave a brisk nod. “Guess so.”
“I love the ring, and I love the cowboy,” she said, holding out her hand to admire the ring.
Some of the tension went out of him and he waited for the rest.
She went on tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “You have to stop worrying so much about Shelby, and about the ranch. Trust me, big guy, I’ll give you more than enough to worry about.”
“Damn straight you will. You already do.” He grinned, reaching to lightly pat her bottom. “But I’ve got a hand and I know how to use it.”
“You certainly do, but I can live with that.” She looked him in the eye. “Do you want to know the reason I’m going to marry you?”
“Your agreement is enough for me.”
She ignored that comment. “Because you’ve got a heart and you know how to use it.”
