“No,” Serenity said. “I’m not leaving.”

Pain shone in Yandel’s grey eyes as he locked his gaze on hers. “Serenity, please—”

“She told me the spirits would make me pay them for healing my leg,” she said. “
If you don’t want me to pay them back by helping you, how do
you
want me to pay?”

He shook his head. “Not—not by—”

“You need someone,” Serenity said. “Someone who can, you know, help you out when that shit happens! Hell, you’re sick of replacing your mules and you don’t want to keep someone around who will keep you from killing them
and
fuck your brains out?”

He opened his mouth and shut it again for a few moments, looking for all the world like a beached fish. “I must have given you too much morphine,” he snorted, darting his eyes away from hers. “You need to go the hell back to bed.”

Penny aimed her flashlight into the burned-out carcass of the car, squinting inside with her mouth pressed into a thin line. “There’s bones in here, Jack,” she said.

“Ooh?” Her partner ambled over, notepad in hand.

“Yeah, bones. We got—ooh, this looks like an arm, I’d say, on the roof right under the steering wheel. It’s broken pretty good.”

“Mm-hmm.” Jack scribbled on his notepad. “Any human identifiers?”

“We’ll have to get CSI out here,” Penny said, hands on her hips. “Hmmm—you don’t think we oughta go bother that couple up in the SUP cabin again, do you?”

“What, all the way up Wendigo Creek?” Her partner shook his head. “We may as well go askin’ the whole county while we’re at it.”

Penny sighed. “Yeah, I guess,” she said, squinting northwest. “This is darn creepy country, isn’t it?.”

“Yeah, well, that’s what happens when you elect a liberal to do a man’s job.” Her partner shook his head. “I don’t see how those two live up here with a bunch of damn wolves running all over creation—”

Penny rolled her eyes as they strolled back to the squad car; coming from a ranching family, Jack had more than a few wolf rants up his sleeves. She’d heard both sides of the debate, and it didn’t matter much to her. As long as the wolves weren’t the ones who had burned this car out, they were fine by her.
