As noted, Sudan is an artificial grouping of two very distinct peoples which is a root cause of much of the civil unrest that has dominated the country's history. In addition, the boundaries between it and its neighbors are, in some instances, still the source of conflict and competition. The ongoing crises in Sudan have had a destabilizing effect on its neighbors, as refugees have fled to them, seeking protection and sustenance.

AFTERWORD

W
hen Elephants Fight
tells the stories of five childhood victims of war and conflict from around the world. There are countless other stories like these—many other children like Jimmy, Nadja, Farooq, Annu and Toma. This book hopes to give a face—if not a voice—to the suffering that is the result of adult conflicts. Children are unwilling participants in the violence that continues to rage in many places around the world, and only when adults take responsibility for their actions and recognize the incalculable cost of war on their children, can the grass be protected from the senseless violence and indiscriminate waste that is warfare and conflict.

Fifty percent of the royalties from this book will go directly to GuluWalk and will help the children of northern Uganda who continue to suffer the impacts of war.
