Discussion Questions
1.
In the beginning of the book, the reader discovers Candace has suffered from major losses in her life, namely, the death of her mother and her husband. Have you ever felt a deep sadness or anger toward God for taking away a loved one?
2.
Darnell sometimes hated the job he loved. Part of his distress came from being a homicide detective and the other part from being an outsider in his new position. Have you been in a situation where you have had to prove yourself to peers or coworkers?
3.
Not long after Candace heard about Pamela's death, she made the assumption that Mitch Harris was responsible. She went as far as confronting him. Jumping to conclusions can cause more trouble than it's worth. What can we learn when we do the same?
4.
Funerals are emotionally hard. Many times grudges and past resentments resurface in families. Candace's aunt tried to reach out to Candace at the funeral, at the salon, and then at home. Have you had a falling-out with a relative or friend? Did they try to reach out to you first? How did you respond?
5.
Frank's death took a toll on the Johnson family. Rachel became an angry young woman. Candace was grieving, as well, and adjusting to being a single parent. How can adults be more in tune with a grieving teen or child?
6.
Her aunt, Maggie, was deeply concerned that Candace did not talk about her mother with her children. Candace moved on by leaving her past behind. Despite her desires to forget childhood events, her mother would appear in her dreams. Have you stuffed down a painful event in your life? Did you seek help or attempt to hide the memories?
7.
Pamela Coleman's homicide was a high-profile case. This intensified the pressure on Darnell and brought unnecessary attention to Candace from the media. Do you think today's media coverage helps or hinders police investigations?
8.
Darnell felt compelled to keep Candace in the loop about the investigation. At some point he realized he needed to pull back because he could jeopardize the case. Do you think he used good judgment by involving her? If you were in Candace's position, would you rely on the police or seek answers on your own?
9.
Both Candace and Hillary suffered from tragic losses in their family, but they reacted differently. What can you learn about the importance of closure and forgiveness from each woman?
10.
Candace lost her mother early in life. God placed a few special older women in her life, like Fredricka Roberts, Desiree Coleman, and Beulah Samuels. Mrs. Roberts and Beulah both played a role in encouraging Candace's faith as she struggled. Do you have someone, maybe a mentor, who you can really be transparent with and who is willing to listen to you?
