“In Cyrus’s name, Brin,” Tabitha whispered. “She was so broken. How bad did it get?”
“Bad. Very, very bad.
“If only that were the worst of it.”
“It wasn’t?”
“No, that was only the beginning. Grieving is a natural process in most creatures, but Dearra was consumed by it. It wasn’t just her father’s passing that affected her, though that would have been hard enough; it was also the guilt.” Brin said, shaking his head.
“Guilt? I don’t understand.”
“If Darius could figure out the bolt that killed Hugh had been meant for her, how long do you think it took for Dearra to come to the same conclusion?”
Tabitha shook her head. “But, it wasn’t her fault! How could she possibly blame herself for Jacob’s actions?”
“Don’t you think I told her that? Don’t you think that we
all
told her that? All she could think of was all the times when she could have killed Jacob and didn’t. Whenever I tried to ease her mind, she would throw my own words back at me, reminding me how I had begged her to kill him.
“As it turned out, it was a very fortunate thing she didn’t kill him, but, of course we didn’t know that then.”
“Wait, what do you mean, fortunate?” Tabitha leaned forward, an eager light in her eyes.
“No, no, no. You’ll have to wait for that part of the story,” Brin said. He chuckled softly.
“Annoying dragon.”
“Flattery will get you nowhere, girl.”
“You can’t honestly mean you’re not going to tell me any more than that,” Tabitha moaned.
“I think you’ve had quite enough for one day. If I could wait a thousand years, I think you can wait a few weeks at least.”
“Weeks? What do you mean weeks?” Tabitha practically yelled.
“Believe it or not, I do have other things to do besides sitting here and telling stories,” Brin said, sounding slightly offended.
“But what are you—”
“I have to pay a visit to some old friends. Well, to call them friends may be pushing it a bit, but…”
“It can’t be that big of a secret. Surely you can tell me.”
“Not a chance, Tabby. You scoot on home now, and when I return, and if you bring me something special, I will finish the story.”
“I’ll be waiting, Brin.”
