Zoe thought they were headed to the bathrooms, so she was surprised when Grace pulled her into a quiet alcove just before the beginning of the line.

Zoe gestured to the still-dramatically-kissing couple of Mama River and the mayor. “So, are they mated yet?”

“I don’t know,” Grace said, eyeing them carefully. “If not, I imagine it’s just a matter of time.”

“Troy and I hardly waited at all,” Zoe said, turning her back on the crowds and dropping her voice so only Grace would hear. “It was literally the first thing we did, you know, afterward. Well, almost the first thing.”

Grace waggled her eyebrows. “Yeah, I know what you mean. Those hunky shifter men are just too damn hard to resist. Especially when they go and fall in love with you. And do crazy things like protecting you with their lives.”

Zoe grinned. “I guess you did owe Jared
something
for saving your life.” She’d heard the stories—everyone had—of Grace’s dramatic rescue from the hands of the notorious Agent Smith.

Grace’s expression gentled into something more serious. “I owe that man
everything.
Did you think I’d let him slip away without bonding to me?
No way.
Plus, the boy has mad skills in bed.
”

Zoe chuckled. She didn’t know if all Representatives bragged about her husband’s prowess in the bedroom, but she had no doubt all of it was true.

Then Grace’s face lost all traces of humor. “So tell me where we are with this superhealing serum.”

Zoe lost her smile as well. “Well, having the mayor’s blood to work with definitely helps in identifying the key parts of the DNA that will, hopefully, express as a superhealing power. But I’m afraid I’m still a long way from distilling it into something like a serum we can promise will be useful for humans. I really need to do trials, Grace, like I mentioned before…”

Grace waved away her concerns, gesturing to the hall around them. “We won the election without it, right? And now that I’m in Congress, I’ll work on getting funding for your research.”

“That’s great.” Zoe was relieved. There were times that science was
slow,
and not everyone understood that.

“And just look at all this, Zo.” Grace beamed at the crowd of witches, wolves, and human election workers gathered to celebrate her win. “When you took out the Wolf Hunter and saved the mayor, you really did a service for not just all wolves, but all of Seattle. Public opinion is radically tipping in favor of equality for wolves now. It’s an amazing thing! I think we’re truly entering a new era, where humans and shifters and witches can be open about who they are and not fear for their lives. Sure, some people will still be biased against them, but with Wild Love and Adopt a Shifter…”

“…and with you in Congress,” Troy interrupted from behind Zoe. She threw him a grin, and he slipped an arm around her waist.

“And with me in Congress,” Grace said with a broad smile, “maybe shifters will have a chance at having ordinary lives after all.”

“Grace, I’ve already voted for you,” Zoe teased. “You can stop campaigning now.”

“Besides, I plan on having an
extraordinary
life,” Troy complained.

“Well, you will.” Grace gestured to the two of them with her hands open. “You’ve got this extraordinary woman by your side for the rest of your life, don’t you?”

Troy held up a small box. “Well, I did pick up the ring on the way over. But I haven’t exactly asked her yet.”

Zoe frowned. “Asked me what yet?”

Grace’s smile turned devilish.

Troy opened the box and got down on one knee. “Zoe Wilding, would you—“

“Yes!” Zoe blurted out, throwing her arms around Troy’s neck.
Oh God
, he was asking her to marry him!

“I didn’t even get the question out!” Troy protested. “That’s the trouble with these Wilding women,” he complained to Grace. “They’re all so
impulsive.”

“Damn right, we are,” said Grace. Zoe pulled back in time to see Grace’s smirk dance across her face. “And you’re damn lucky to have her.”

“Can’t argue with that.” Troy stood up, and Zoe’s hands were shaking so badly, he had to hold one still while he slipped the sapphire-studded ring around her finger. Then held her hand up to his lips and gently kissed it. “I’d drag you to the courthouse and marry you this minute, Zo, but I hear Mama River’s got something in the works. I think it might be a triple wedding.”

Zoe beamed. “I hear she’s getting good at those.”

Grace leaned forward and whispered conspiratorially. “Only this time
she’s
going to be in it!”

Zoe’s laugh bubbled out from somewhere deep inside her. If it were possible to be happier than she was right now, she’d have to be somewhere in a room with Troy, naked and writhing underneath him. And from the glint in his eye, that didn’t seem like a far-off possibility, either. Then when he kissed her, the rest of the room, with its noisy celebration, its witches and wolves and plenty of love to go around, faded into the background.

It was just her and the man she loved.

Her alpha.

The man who’d lit a magical fire inside her that would never go out.
