Don’t you agree?”

He touched her cheek softly with his fingertips. “I think you deserve everything you ever wanted. That’s what I think, and it’s what I know.”

Much later that night, things had finally settled down.

Sean had taken Lydia to the hospital and some more of Kane’s “associates” had come and cleaned up the blood from the house and the glass and bullets in the driveway.

Kane’s associates had now departed the scene as well, and now everyone was simply drinking out by the pool and going over the events of the evening.

A strange kind of lightness and giddiness had replaced the anxiety and stress and shock that everyone had been feeling earlier.

It was almost as if a bad hex had been removed from the group, and suddenly the air was clear. It was safe again. Safe to laugh, safe to talk loudly, safe to love and be loved.

Kallie and Hunter ended up in the pool somehow, with their clothes on, laughing and telling everyone of their first meeting.

Red and Nicole were canoodling on one of the lounge chairs. Riley was spending the night with her sitter, and the two of them were acting like it was their honeymoon.

Kallie’s mother was passed out with a drink in one hand.

Danielle and Kane were talking passionately about something, and then he touched her belly and kissed her deeply.

Scarlett was watching all of this, as she drank one of many beers. She was watching it all and feeling part of it, for the first time. These were her people, she realized. They’d been through a battle together, and now they were all going to be okay.

They’d shared something real. She could trust each and every one of them.

Bryson came and stood next to her, his arm brushing hers. “Hey,” he said, taking a swig of his own drink.

“How’s your hand?” she asked him.

“Hurts,” he said.

“So, you never did tell me why you were coming back here all by yourself.”

He turned and faced her. “Because I had an idea.” And that’s when he pulled a small, velvety box from his front pocket and dropped to one knee. “I had an idea that if I waited another moment to ask you to marry me, I’d never be able to live with myself.”

Scarlett had never been so shocked in all her life. Not even when Trevor had come through that doorway with a gun in hand.

She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

“Scarlett Evers, will you make this fool the happiest fool in the world, and will you be my wife?”

She nodded without hesitation and the tears came streaming down her face.

She said yes, but the words weren’t even necessary. Because a moment later, she was in Bryson’s arms and she’d never felt so loved and safe. She was home.
