He smiled down at her in a way that made a flurry of
butterflies take off in her tummy.

“Of all my fantasies,” he said, “this is my favorite. You,
here, in my bed, looking at me like…like…”

“Like there’s nowhere else I’d rather be?” She watched his
eyes darken with intense emotion.

“Exactly,” he said, settling down alongside her. His fingers
trailed up over her hips to her breasts, drew circles around her nipples and
skimmed back down to her thighs.

Cory’s heart swelled with joy. The only way she could be
happier would be if she knew he wasn’t really upset about her leaving his
office. “You know,” she said, lightly stroking his chest, “I will find you the
perfect assistant before I leave.”

“You’d better,” he grumbled but gave her a kiss to counter
his threat. “Of course I wouldn’t mind if it took you a few months to find me
the right person for the job.”

“Hmmph. I’m figuring on a week, tops. Like I said, there’s
practically a waiting list for my position…as your
assistant
that is.”

He was quiet for a moment. “I suppose I’ll manage. But don’t
expect me to be happy about it.” His fingers traced a figure eight around her
navel.

She gave him a quick peck on his mouth. “Understood. Any
other little things you want to get off your chest while we’re still in talk
mode?”

Raising himself on his elbow, he gave her a quizzical look.
“Now that you mention it, yes. I can’t help but notice that you seem a little
too anxious to be moving on. You said you didn’t have another job offer. What
are you planning to do?”

Her face flushed with excitement and she sat up, suddenly
full of energy again. “A good friend of mine is head of human resources over at
the Xanadu. She’s often talked about how hard it is to get competent,
trustworthy staff.”

“The Xanadu Hotel on the beach?” He frowned at her in
disbelief. “Are you saying that rather than continue to work for me, you’d go
to work for an architectural relic that caters to the rich and famous and
probably pays minimum wage?”

“Don’t be silly. How could I ever be satisfied with another
boss after you? I’m not talking about working for the hotel. I’m going to start
my own temp agency and Xanadu will be my first client. I’ve got some unique
ideas that I think my friend will jump at.”

His expression remained one of astonishment. “You do know
that whole property is supposed to be haunted. Murdered gangsters, jilted
lovers, even the ghost of the guy who built the place is supposedly still
hanging around. I attended a seminar there once and I kept feeling like I was
being watched. And I don’t mean in a good way. If I remember correctly, two or
three people have disappeared from there. You’d be much safer in my office.”

She laughed. “Actually, I’m kind of hoping some of those
freaky stories are true. Just think of all the fun things I’d have to tell you
about over dinner.” She expected him to continue to come up with negatives but
instead he just studied her face for a moment.

“You’re absolutely glowing,” he said with a nod of approval.
“You were glowing quite nicely before but this is different.” He made a show of
sighing with resignation. “Okay, what can I do to help?”

She wasn’t totally surprised that he would offer to be
supportive eventually but such a quick turnaround was definitely an encouraging
sign about the future of this relationship. “Hmmm,” she murmured as she ran her
index finger from the tip of his nose down into the curls of his pubic hair.
“You know, starting my own business could be very stressful. How are you at giving
massages?”

He pulled her back down into his arms with a chuckle. “I
can’t say I’ve had a lot of experience but I’ll be glad to work at it until
you’re completely satisfied.”

As his fingers found their way between her thighs to give
her a sampling of just how hard he was willing to work, she knew he was the
right man for the job.
