Chapter 17

SEVERAL WEEKS LATER

The town of Bramble Gorge literally stank with the smells that wafted through the hazy August afternoon air.

Ed Bolt could smell frying sausages and the sour scent of spilled ale. There was bitter sawdust from the new livery stables which were under construction, and he could taste the dry road dirt swirled up by endless passing feet and horses’ hooves.

The town was so damn
busy,
everyone running along as if they might miss something should they slow down for a moment.

Ed supposed he should be grateful; the hurried, rushing people probably wouldn’t pay much attention to Julia and himself. The newlywed pair made their way slowly down the main street, headed towards Mother Henne’s tavern.

Ed’s Constable’s uniform was gone, and he was wearing a plain, drab suit of clothes—with mismatched boots to accommodate his clubfoot, as always. If someone noticed him and spat in his direction, or threw an insult, he would have to defend his own and his new wife’s honor—and might get beaten down in the process.

But hells—he would fight them.

He was still aching from all the running and climbing and fighting, and he had scars on his right arm and face from the teeth and claws of that rutting Croatoan, not to mention a burn on his right leg that still stung.

But if they insulted him, or threatened Julia, he
would
fight.

No insults came his way, though.

Indeed, he hadn’t had to deal with any such torments recently. Perhaps they’d all heard that he was supposed to be some kind of hero? That he’d rescued Rector Powell’s daughter from the terrible fire that had destroyed the Rector’s Manse?

“Terrible fire” was an understatement. The explosion had been massive. There was nothing left now but a wide pit in the ground where the house and the faerie mound had been, and fragments on debris for a half mile around.

Of course, Ed had tried to tell the Magistrate and the town fathers what had really happened.

They’d asked so many damn questions …

In the end, they seemed to agree that the Rector had suffered from some sort of brain fever or creeping madness, and had burned down the house himself, either purposefully or by accident. There were many others in the town who had noticed oddities in the Rector’s behavior as of late, so Ed didn’t have to work very hard to convince them of the preacher’s madness.

They didn’t believe what Ed told them about the demon Croatoan and the walking dead servants,--even when Julia swore to the truth of all these details in order to reinforce the veracity of Ed’s tales. They thought these monsters were phantasms that both young people had hallucinated due to the stress of their imprisonment in the house.

But at least no one blamed Ed for anything. Indeed, they seemed to think he had conducted himself commendably.

There was even a small reward for him in coin…

And no one questioned the marriage certificate, despite the odd circumstances of the union. Ed was very, very glad of this.

He wasn’t sure how he was going to support both himself and his young wife—but he knew that he would do everything he could to take care of his lovely Julia.

Now, they drew close to Mother Henne’s tavern and Ed heard the hubbub from inside. He grew nervous. He knew the tavern could be a rough place, and he didn’t want to expose Julia to any trouble.

Gently nudging her, he pointed her towards a sundries shop across the street.

“Why don’t you go over there and … uh … look around for a while?” he suggested. “I won’t be long.”

“But Edwin …” she protested, shaking her head in dismay, “Husband--I don’t want to leave you.”

“But they probably sell books in there, you know, and … here.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a few silver coins, handed them to her. “Why don’t you buy a few new romances? It’ll be another little present from me, okay?”

“Really?” Her big blue eyes went wide. “New books?”

“Really. Just wait by the shop and I’ll find you in a few minutes, all right?”

She nodded eagerly, and he watched her skip across the street, her long red hair flowing radiantly behind her and the skirts of her new yellow dress streaming out as she went.

The dress was another recent present which he had given her. He had spent endless moments studying how it hugged the wondrous contours of his young wife’s curvy body.

She looked so bright, so healthy, so happy …

Oh
Julia
, he thought.
You trust me so much. I want to give you so many things and take care of you but how can I tell you—I have no idea what our future will hold?

Ed opened the heavy door and entered Mother Henne’s, bracing himself for the inevitable insults.

But they didn’t come. Everyone in the room seemed too intent on their own business to notice him.

They were huddled close together, excited conversations everywhere. There were a few new faces, too. Some soldiers he didn’t recognize—probably just shipped in from England—and two Dutchmen who must have been traders from somewhere in New York.

Jenny was in an unusually chipper mood, actually whistling as she wiped down the top of the bar. Ed almost missed her usual, dour demeanor.

“Good afternoon, Mister Bolt,” Jenny said as he approached her, smiling coldly.

“Umm … hello,” he said. “Uh … Mother Henne’s in the cupboard?”

Jenny shrugged. “As usual. Nothing to be done for it.”

He made his way to the cupboard and found the old lady in her usual spot.

She had a paper in front of her on her little table there. It looked like some kind of official document, and she ran her finger down the lines of it as if scrutinizing the details. When Ed entered, though, she swiftly folded it up and shoved it under one of her ledger books.

“Edwin!” she cooed.

He nodded. “I got your note. You wanted to see me, but you didn’t say why.”

“Sit down!” she beckoned him to sit on the floor, then pointed towards a small tray resting on a nearby shelf. On it was a piece of currant cake and a mug of ginger beer.

Ed wasn’t very hungry, but he eased down to the floor and took the mug right away; the sweet ginger beer tasted wonderful on his dry tongue.

Chewing her jerky as usual, Mother Henne leaned forward, squinting at him.

“Why so glum?” she asked. “I heard you got a commendation from the Magistrate, eh?”

He nodded. “Yes, they gave me a letter, and some … a few pieces of silver.”

“So!” she clapped her hands. “Becoming a man of the world. Well! Back when you were slouching in here all the time, I never thought anything would become of you.”

“What?”

She shrugged. “I’m just saying, boy, you did surprise me. And you killed that demon—we can all thank you for that, eh?”

He sighed. “Maybe.”

Though Croatoan had believed that others of his kind were still out there, hiding in their own deep wells hidden around the Earth… That was something Ed tried not to think about right now.

“Well I am thankful for certain. As a matter of fact…” she leaned forward, her eyes bulging out, as if about to share some tremendous secret. In her excitement, she shoved the entire length of the long strip of jerky she’d been chewing into her mouth, and choked and coughed before shaking her head wildly to dislodge the meat, which she then spat onto the floor.

“Uhh … You all right?” Ed asked.

She waved her hand to show that she was fine. “Ack! But it’s just … Well, I don’t like these happenings here. Can’t get used to it, I’m too old. Dancing demons, pillars of light shooting up in the sky…you know. Not to mention these cheap old drunkards that call themselves customers. I just can’t keep up no more. What I’d really like is to go live with my sister in Carolina. Pick crabs off the beach and sleep in the noontimes. In fact …” she leaned forward again, blinking down at Ed, “I might sell this place for a trifle to the right buyer. Maybe someone who’s just come into a lil’ bit of money?”

“You’re talking about ME?” Ed gasped. “That’s a joke, right? I could never run a tavern—I hate drunk people.”

She smiled and wriggled a finger at him. “Ah, Edwin, you hate people in general. Just like me! But I made a go of it. When you’re the one who gives ‘em their ale, you can demand their respects, eh? Hell, I spend most of my time back here. Jenny and the others do most of it … hardly ever have to put a hand in. Ah, but I am itching to leave soon for Carolina. Those crabs are calling to me.”

She took the paper out from under the ledger book and unfolded it.

Ed slowly stood up and leaned over the table to get a better look. He saw that the paper was some kind of legal contract, with a bunch of lines for signatures at the bottom.

“I’ll let it go for next to nothing,” Mother Henne said. “An insulting fee. Say… a few coins of Spanish silver?”

The amount listed on the contract was the exact amount of his reward from the Magistrate.
But how did she…?

Still, it was an intriguing idea. Imagine … he could tell Jenny what to do (she’d be aside herself having to work for him… What would she say to Julia? Ah, but he could deal with that…).  He could price the ale how he’d like, decide who would or wouldn’t get served … Just sit back and count the money.

With all the profits coming his way, he might be able to retire to someplace nice eventually, and get Julia a big house with servants and a flower garden.

But the purchase—though undoubtedly at a ludicrously low price--would take
all
of his remaining reward monies, and this was so sudden …

“I need to think about it for a while,” he said.

She shook her head. “I told you I can’t wait. I already mentioned the deal to Thompson the Baker … He said he’d try to be over with the money as soon as he’s finished with the next lot of muffins. That would be …” she closed her eyes, pretending to think. “Oh, any minute now.”

“Rutting hell! All right … ” Ed scanned the contract. He wasn’t very familiar with such things, but it seemed straightforward enough. “This says that I get all the money coming in, all of the assets, right?”

“All of it,” she said. She grabbed a pen from a nearby inkwell and held it out to him, smiling.

As he looked at her weathered lips and rotting teeth, he couldn’t help but feel a vague sense of unease, some tingle of suspicion deep down inside.

Of course, he didn’t trust people normally …

But this was Mother Henne, his only friend for so long! Without her, he’d never have heard about the demon and met Julia and become her hero …

“I’ll do it,” he said, motioning for the pen. He quickly signed on the blank marked “Purchaser,” and Mother Henne cackled with glee as she wrote her own name next to it in the appropriate space.

This is for you,
Julia,
Ed thought.
This is for us, for our future…

Chapter 18

One Month Later…

Former Constable Edwin Bolt
was behind the serving bar at Mother Henne’s, his face a livid red and his dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat.

Julia was wiping down a table with a rag, but she looked up and gave her hard-working husband a reassuring smile.

Edwin smiled back, briefly… But scowled again as one customer, a red-coated army officer, waved to him and approached the serving bar.

“Master Bolt
,” the officer said, “might you have a couple mugs sent over to us in a moment?”

Edwin
scowled at him. “A moment? Everyone is so rutting impatient! Hell, it’s just the two of us working here.”

“You me
an your wife and yourself?” the officer asked. “But where’s that Jenny girl who used to--?”

“Gone!” Edwin
hissed. “Mother Henne owed her back wages, and she left me a load of debt connected to this hellhole. A thousand pounds owed!”

The officer
nodded in sympathy.” I am sorry, good fellow. I’d heard that you had been rather exploited in the deal.”

“Stop
looking so smug, dammit,” Edwin said.

“Edwi
n!” Julia scolded. “He’s a very polite gentleman… I’ll bring your mugs over in a moment, sir.”

The Officer smiled and doffed his cap to her, then returned to his seat.

Though tired-eyed and sweating herself, Julia smiled again at her husband. After setting down an armful of empty mugs on the counter, she kissed his cheek.

“It’s all right,” she told him. “Once those men leave, perhaps we can close up for a bit and, uhh, check the storage cupboard?”

Edwin’s mouth curled up briefly in a devious smile. Julia felt herself flush… She knew that smile meant that her husband was hungry for her love and the touch of her curvy body.

It hasn’t been easy, running the tavern by themselves. And Edwin had been furious when he’d found about the debt with which Mother Henne had left him. He’d sought help from the Magistrates office, but they’d just sighed and asked him why he wouldn’t seek lawyerly advice before signing such a contract?

Frustrated, Edwin had taken out his rage on a few pierces of glassware. He could be a temperamental man, her dear husband… But she had the knack for cooling his anger. And he had never been angry with her, nor ever struck her a blow… Beyond a playful slap light to her arse from time to time when they were alone, of course.

He was forever her hero and protector. When she was deeply tired, he would insist she take to bed, running the entire tavern room himself—despite his known misery with the occupation.

When an unruly customer leered at her or, God forbid, groped her… Edwin would explode. Despite his bad foot, his fists could deal quite a punishment. Usually, the threat of having their supply of drink cut off kept the customers well behaved, though.

Now, there was increasing traffic in town, with the trade on the nearby roads going south to Philadelphia and west to the other parts of the colony. Business in the tavern was very good.

Julia had found she had a knack for keeping the books for their business, and she had concluded that the debt they had was not insurmountable. It might take a year or two to pay off, but after that, there would be plenty of profits.

In that respect, the deal that Mother Henne had given Edwin wasn’t really that bad. Of course, he would never see it that way…

The officer and his fellow soldiers finished their drinks and left, and her husband locked the door of the tavern behind them.

“Maybe we ought to check the cupboard now?” Edwin suggested.

“Of course, we’d best do it together.” Julia told him.

She could feel her husband’s gaze on her back like a hot pressure as she sauntered towards the cupboard. No doubt it was her jutting backside that was getting the most attention from him… though clad in a very modest brown cotton dress at the moment, she’d felt his eyes on her all afternoon. It was wonderful to be desired so much by this man, her adoring husband and protector.

Edwin practically worshipped her. He rarely had a good word for anyone else, true… But he always told her how lovely she was, how he never tired of looking at her, how he was glad above all else that she was his wife, despite the odd circumstances of their union.

She knew he hoped to one day give her a luxurious life. He wanted her to pampered and happy… He’d tried to convince her not to work at all, that he could run the tavern all by himself… And she was
sure he would have tried, too. He wanted, always, to be her shining knight and to protect and care for her.

But he had done so much. She was free now, and had his love… They had their own business, and were in control of their own lives. He would always be her prince, her hero.

She had been pampered before, in her father’s home--but had been a prisoner there. Now, she had so much more. And, thanks to Edwin, the threat of the demonic Croataon no longer hung over the land.

Now, Julia opened the door of the cupboard and entered the long, narrow room lined with shelving, her Edwin following close behind her.

“Mother Henne used to hide in here,” Edwin observed. “Sometimes she’d want to talk, and bribe me with cake.”

“Oh,” Julia cooed, “So you liked her cake?”

He laughed. “It was delicious. But not as delicious as you.”

She grabbed a small step-stool and climbed it, pretending to search for something on a high shelf… Knowing that Edwin would be below her, his face at the level of her ample posterior.

“Ooh, where did I hide that bottle of cider vinegar, now? Hmmm…” she declared in an exaggerated fashion.

“Vinegar’s sour,” Edwin declared. “But I see something sweeter. A soft and delectable morsel.”

Quickly, his hands were on her skirt, then sliding up her legs and thighs to caress her bum under her dress… Squeezing her playfully there.

God, he knew just how to touch her! A forceful insistence, sometimes a little rough but never enough to be uncomfortable or painful. A touch that was possessive, protective and full of genuine love and lust.

He lightly bit her arse cheek through the material of her dress. “Come down from there, my beauty,” he commanded.

She stepped down from the step-stool and turned to face him.

He kissed her deeply, kneading his hands in her thick orange hair while his lips pressed hard against hers and his tongued danced over her teeth.

“I love you so much, my Julia,” he told her. “Being close to you, I can always forget all my worries. I just need you. And so rutting badly, too, right now!”

She looked down and saw his cock straining against his trouser-leg like a thick hungry snake seeking escape.

“Turn around,” he told her. “Bend over and place your hands on the step-stool, pretty… I mean, umm, if that is agreeable to you?”

She bit her lower lip, as she thought about how good it would feel to let him bend her over and fill her completely…

She turned and bent as he had asked, and he felt his firm hands caressing her arse and her curvy hips, sliding all over in a worshipful appreciation of her soft and ample feminine charms.

He let go of her for a moment. There was a clink of a metal belt buckle, then a shuffle of cloth as he removed his trousers, the thud of his boots as he took them off and set them aside.

My God,
she thought.

He knows exactly what I’m thinking.

But of course, she knew him well… And knew exactly what his favorite position was by now (though they’d tried so many in their marriage bed already… and had “practiced” their love-making all over the tavern and the rooms upstairs, too, whenever they’d been alone. Edwin’s bad foot seemed little impediment in these matters… And his passion and vigour never failed to impress her, his new, adoring wife.)

He moved closer to her again,
lifted her skirts, and soon she felt the thick, warm head of his prick rubbing against her exposed upper thigh, then against one cheek of her arse.

“Oh,” she heard him exclaim in surprise as his cock
-head rubbed her soft, yielding flesh there.

He le
aned forward and licked her right ear with his hot tongue. Julia whimpered in anticipation.

He grabbed her waist with both of his powerful hands…

His knees were between her legs, spreading them wide, so she stood in a wide stance, bent over the step-stool. His hand caressed her neck, and leaned forward and kissed her shoulder, making her shudder.

He pressed his palm into the soft flesh of her hip, sliding it up her rounded belly, then under the bodice of her dress. Julia whimpered as his hand reached inside her dress, closing around a heavy, tender breast, squeezing it and pinching the nipple hard.

"Ooooh," she moaned--but it was hardly louder than a sigh.

She felt her skirt wrenched up, as his hands quickly and efficiently rolled the cloth up around her waist…

He slid his hands forward further, exploring her most tender areas which were now fully exposed to him. His seeking hands brushed her nether lips, and she shuddered.

The next thing she felt was the hot, spongy, seeking head of his lust-engorged cock probing against her arse. It slid down between her legs, sliding over her cunny lips and making her shake with anticipation.

He grabbed one of her bum cheeks in his hand, his nails digging in, while his other hand guided his wide cock-head up and into place. In a moment, he’d found the spot, already dripping and inviting to him.

Julia braced herself for the delicious onslaught--but for now, there was only a steady pressure that felt wonderful as her husband’s thick organ began to slide into her clinging sheath.

“Ooh, Edwin!” she gasped.

Her outer lips were already stretched, pulsing and sensitive around his invading maleness, as he pushed in ever so slowly. Her clitty burned with pleasure and she was tempted to buck back and meet his entry—but she tried to be patient and let him guide their coupling.

Showing a bit of tenderness, he started by moving back and forth slowly, letting her cunny get used to his girth.

And slowly, she ground his hips back to meet him. Her lust had taken over, and she was trying to get as much of this marvelous cock inside of her as she could take.

He started to pump faster then, sensing her readiness … Then to pound her in earnest, jerking her violently forward with each thrust as his sought to push his maleness deeper and deeper inside of her body.

She heard him moan with the pleasure of his own satisfaction, and yet his pace was perfect for her… Hard enough to excite her beyond measure, but never jarring or painful.

Julia’s hands closed into fists, the knuckles turning white. Her mouth opened into a silent scream, frozen into a large “O” to mirror her cunny pried open by her man’s thickness. For a moment, there was no thought in her mind.

Nothing existed but the feel of her dear Edwin moving into her. Forcing her slick walls open.

Her eyes squinted shut as the sensations raced from her cunny all the way to her aching nipples.

She felt the scratchy softness of Edwin’s beard on her cheek. She opened her eyes and he was leaning over her.

She twisted her head back and met his lips in a clumsy yet deliciously naughty kiss, their open mouths dancing together oh so briefly as his body moved in and out of her own.

Now, he went deep… His rock hard cock filled her weeping cunny completely, to the brim.

Again, his deft hands reached underneath her dress, finding her nipples. She mewled he pulled on them, using her tender teats as handholds to pull himself deeper into her womanhood.

Biting her lower lip, Julia began to move her hips back to meet his thrusts, using a swiveling motion so that the cock moved around inside the muscular folds of her cunny.

“My God,” she thought, “I’ll never get tired of this! He’s so big, and it feels sooo good …”

There was no pleasure that she could imagine greater than having her husband’s manhood filling her, possessing her in this way.

Her moans filled the air in the tight confines of the cupboard, and her knees went weak as he continued to thrust into her quivering cunny.

Her body shivered, and she shook as her body betrayed her mind. His hand came over her mouth, silencing her cries of ecstasy. Her cunny squeezed and sucked at his cock as he shoved himself inside of her.

Heat filled her body. She jerked in his grasp as he pulled out, shoved himself back inside again.

And then, as her own cl
imax ebbed, she heard him grunt: “Julia… rutting hell! It’s too much, I…”

He grabbed her hips forcefully, and pulled her back on his cock.

Buried deep inside her body, he moaned as he filled her.

She felt him throbbing inside of her and the warmth spreading deep. Once again she began to shudder with a climax, and pushed back against him.

When it was over, he gently guided her around to face him. He held her, planting gentle kisses all over her passion-flushed face and neck.
