Ed, your grandmother, your mom or dad or even a spirit guide. A

mental medium often unknowingly, engages in an inner dialogue

with those on the other side throughout the day. Because receiving

the thoughts of others comes so easily to a mental intuitive they

often do not believe that they are actually communicating with the

other side. Mental mediums often doubt their intuitive ability. After receiving intuitive information they will often tell me it was “all in their head.” To which I say. “Exactly, you’re a mental medium.”

Mental mediums receive the thoughts of those in the spirit

realm in a few different ways. Sometimes auditory messages can

be heard with inwardly at time outwardly, like talking to a physi-

cal person. This is known as
clairaudience
. Mental mediums also receive spirit messages
telepathically
. Telepathic communication is the ability to send and receive thoughts back and forth from one

mind to another or to know the thoughts of another or of a group.

Mental mediums also have the ability to simply know and become

aware of energy information, this is known as
claircognizance
. This can feel like a large bulk of knowledge has suddenly been dropped

in your lap. Mental mediums tend to more easily receive facts and

information like names and dates from those in the spirit realm,

than the other types.

Thought Messages From Spirit

Loved ones in spirit send us thought messages all the time. They

love us and do all that they can to help us. It is so common we

rarely realize the supernatural source of our thoughts and ideas.

From their vantage point they can often see what is coming our

way, both the hurdles and opportunities. Our loved ones try to

alert, warn and signal us of approaching positive, negative and un-

expected events. It can take a bit of training in the spirit realm for them to learn how to effectively do this. Unlike an emotional intuitive who might feel fear or stress when they feel a warning coming

to them from the spirit realm, a mental medium, can often intuit

information in a calm and decisive manner.

Because mental mediums are comfortable with processing

thoughts and complicated information, spirit guides often work

through them to bring useful guidance and enlightenment to oth-

ers. Because of their innate connection with the mind and con-

sciousness, mental mediums can also be interested in receiving

wisdom and inspiration from otherworldly and extraterrestrial life

forms. If you have the ability and passion to contribute and use

what you intuitively receive in positive ways, your spirit guides may utilize you for a higher purpose.

Resistance and Other Obstacles

Like all of the medium types, the mental medium has a couple of

obstacles to be mindful of. Because energy information tends to

pour into their consciousness, they can become distracted and un-

focused by the sheer volume of thoughts. At times they absorb so

much thought energy they become overwhelmed and are unable to

make a decision or take action. In order to effectively understand

the constant mind chatter that they might be experiencing, mental

mediums have to learn to slow down, breathe and clear the mind.

Meditation can be very helpful.

Mental mediums tend to enjoy logic and rational thinking.

They like patterns, systems and thinking that make sense to them.

To be a medium, you must however, be comfortable with the ab-

stract and not knowing. Intuiting information without attempting

to prematurely understand and pin down what you receive is an-

other challenge for the mental medium. Because of their inclina-

tion toward rational thinking, not all mental mediums believe that

they have the ability to communicate with the other side. Without

scientific proof that life after death exists, they may not believe that there is consciousness outside of the physical body. Mental mediums may be skeptics who view psychic and medium ability as far-

fetched and delusional thinking. Their world is logical and rational with no room for this kind of silliness. Acceptance of their innate

medium ability does not always come easy. They will often deny

and dismiss their own intuitive experiences as unreliable coinci-

dences. Their doubts however do not always prevent the persistent

flow and influx of other worldly thoughts, ideas and insights from

the other side. Mental mediums can live in a vigilant paradox of denial. While they readily receive information from the other side in the form of insights, ideas and helpful information, they discredit the source. They may choose instead to attribute their flashes of

intuitive brilliance as their individual thoughts. However once they accept the possibility that they are intuiting information from nonphysical sources, mental mediums are quick studies who often rap-

idly develop their natural medium abilities.

Mental mediums are often motivated to become professional

mediums by their thirst for knowledge, wisdom and to further

explore the vast, unknown and unseen world. They can be excep-

tional mediums who provide exacting information, unique ideas

and a cohesive understanding of the spirit realm.

The Manifesters

Physical Intuitives

A physical intuitive absorbs and receives information energy pri-

marily through their body and the physical world. They often de-

scribe their intuition as a gut feeling. Physical intuitives tend to unknowingly absorb the energy of others and their environment

directly into their physical bodies. Surrounded by positive people

this will feel uplifting and energizing. In a negative or stressful environment they are likely to experience unexplained headaches,

stomach problems or become tired. Physical intuitives also have a

special connection to nature. Through the natural world, the stars, seas, animals and plants they receive cosmic energy and inspiration.

Physical Mediums

Have you ever wondered if something in nature like a bird, snake,

cloud or butterfly was sending you a message? Do you sometimes

find coins, certain stones or feathers on your path and wonder if

someone on the other side sent them to you? Do the lights in your

house sometimes blink or the chimes of a clock suddenly ring and

you are certain someone in spirit is trying to get your attention?

A physical medium often experiences more demonstrable psychic

phenomena than the other types of mediums. Their loved ones

in spirit are likely to try and contact them through blinking the

lights in their home, creating static on the phone or television and other unusual interruptions of electrical, internet and audio wave

lengths. Physical mediums are also likely to naturally connect with those on the other side through synchronistic encounters with nature and material objects. Because their intuition is connected to

the more dense vibration of the physical their loved ones in spirit often use electrical currents, animals-especially birds, coins, phone lines and more physical phenomena to get their attention.

Psychometry

A physical medium communicates with those on the other side in

a more somatic way than the other types. Their physical body is a

finely tuned sensor that absorbs energy vibration. Because of this

they are especially adept at connecting to the other side through

psychometry. Psychometry is the ability to hold or touch an ob-

ject or look at a photograph and receive intuitive energy vibrations from it. Many mediums connect to the spirit of their loved ones on

the other side by holding a personal object or looking at a photo-

graph. A ring, car keys, a piece of clothing or a hair brush are also good conductors.

Physical mediums tend to have pictures of their loved ones in

their home or office. This is not just a sentimental gesture. They

create and feel an energetic connection with their loved ones on the

other side by simply looking at and holding their photo. Physical

mediums are also more likely to want to have their departed loved

ones objects, furniture and knick knacks throughout their home.

A client of mine with physical medium tendencies, had her garage

and basement stuffed with her beloved mothers furniture. These

items were so important to her that when she moved across coun-

try, she hired an extra moving van to move these things, rather than sell them. I also had a client whose daughter died after a lengthy

illness. Her daughter drove a compact car that she adored. My cli-

ent sold her new hybrid car to drive her daughter’s older model car.

It not only helped her to feel closer to her, she felt her daughter’s spirit as a visceral presence when she drove it. All of us are likely to have pictures of our loved ones and possess a few of their personal items. But, for a physical medium these things are their life line to the other side. They experience an energetic connection with their

loved ones through them. An emotional medium absorbs their

loved ones presence through their emotions and feelings. A men-

tal medium carries on internal conversations with their loved ones

and receive their thoughts and ideas and a spiritual medium intuits their loved ones presence or connect with them through visions,

dreams or apparitions. A physical medium experiences a tangible

connection their loved ones on the other side through their photo-

graphs or items. For a physical medium, a personal object or pho-

tograph is like a cell phone to the other side. They transmit cosmic vibrations.

Putting Energy into Words

With a little effort a physical medium can become aware of the en-

ergy vibrations that they are receiving from the other side through certain objects, photographs or occurrences in the natural world.

Their challenge is to go a step further. Once this phenomenon is

accepted they must then discern the message. For the other types

this is easier as their innate intuitive functioning is wired to un-210 ~ Your Medium Potential

derstand the thoughts, feelings and visions that they are receiving.

Physical mediums may need to develop the capacity to put into

words the energy messages that they receive. They might be aware

of signs from the other side, but to develop their medium abilities they need to extend their skills into translating and discerning the meaning behind the vibrations.

Some physical mediums are not comfortable or willing to dia-

logue with non-physical energy. It can feel too abstract and unre-

liable. The challenge for these mediums is to accept the existence

that there is life after death and that we have the inherent ability to connect and communicate. Accepting non-physical life forms

as viable and meaningful sources of love and wisdom accelerates a

physical medium’s development. Once a physical medium perceives

spirit within physical form and puts words to their impressions,

their intuitive gifts come into full bloom.

In Service to Others

Physical mediums often pursue a professional medium career to

be of service to others. Once they refine their ability to put words and meaning to energy vibration, they can hone in on practical and

down to earth guidance from the spirit realm. Their bodies become

a reliable instrument for receiving love, help and care from the

other side.

Well-developed physical mediums can excel at more practical

matters and are able to receive from loved ones on the other side,

advice in areas such finances, the buying and selling of property,

help in locating lost items and even needed car repairs. They also

tend to more easily receive information about the health conditions and illnesses of those in spirit while they were in the physical world.

In medium sessions, I usually tune into the health problem or ill-

ness that led to a loved one’s passing. This is a common way for me to identify for my client the loved one whom I am speaking to.

Physical mediums can be natural channels. A channel is an in-

dividual who becomes a receptive and accessible vessel for a spirit to communicate through. The difference between a channel and

a medium is that a medium communicates with a spirit. A chan-

nel allows a spirit to enter their body and communicate through

them. There are conscious and unconscious channels. Putting their

conscious awareness aside, an individual becomes an unconscious

channel when they do not know what a spirit says or does when

they are within their physical body. With a conscious channel the

individual is aware of what the spirit may be saying and doing.

The first time I witnessed an unconscious channel was when

I was in my early twenties and attending a Spiritualist Church. It

was one of my first visits to the church, a small window front on a busy street in San Francisco. The speaker took his place behind the podium. He said a few opening words then put his head down for

a moment. He then began to speak to us in a women’s voice. His

mannerisms completely changed. He held his body more fluidly
