home.”

Her mother looked flustered, but she

opened, and her heart sank when she realized that they were
actually medical bills—each one higher than the last. By the time

The bills were astronomical, and even without finding the money to
pay for further treatment for her mother, Alicia didn’t have any

She put the bills in her handbag, and
smiled at her mother. “You’re right, mom, it’s nothing at all to
worry about. I thought I’d told the hospital to make sure that they
sent these bills to me, but there was obviously a mix-up in the
clerical office. Don’t even think about these again, okay? They’ve
already been taken care of.” She had her fingers crossed under the
table, excusing herself for blatantly lying to her
mother.

With a sinking feeling she came to the
