We arrive at the airport and Annabelle and I seem to be doing all right. We’ve chatted and laughed our way here and I’ll be happy when we get back home. We meet Tracy and Karl in the airport café. I’m pleased to hear that Karl has decided to go back with Tracy to Los Angeles. They’re finally biting the bullet and moving in together and I couldn’t be happier for them. Karl changed his ticket, so he’s flying straight to Los Angeles with Tracy. He says he doesn’t need to go to London now that his company has been sold. Annabelle looks happy talking to Tracy and I really hope we can get past all this shit. Tracy and Karl set off after half an hour for the departure lounge as their flight is scheduled before ours. We’re still sitting at the café when I hear Maddison.

“What the hell are you doing here…with her?” I groan and look to see Maddison standing beside our table with her arms crossed, and with that upset look she carries so well.

“Maddison, what do you want?”

She huffs. “Me? I couldn’t find you earlier at the bungalows so I was hoping to catch up with you here, but I didn’t expect to see you here…with her.” She glares at Annabelle and turns her nose up.

“I’m here with my wife. Why don’t you just leave us alone and catch your flight?”

“Baby, you don’t have to do this.” She grasps my arm and I shake her off, but I see the pleading in her eyes. “She knows now, so we don’t have to hide it anymore. We can be together finally.” I stare at her not quite believing the words that she’s saying about wanting to be together. I’m not given the chance to reply because Annabelle stands up, glaring at Maddison.

“Look bitch, he isn’t going anywhere with you. He doesn’t love you or want to be with you, so get that through your thick skull. He wants me and only me, so piss off and leave us alone. Oh, and by the way…in case you haven’t figured it out…you’re fired!”

Maddison stares wide-eyed. “How can you forgive him for what he’s done? He’s cheated on you and to be honest, you look pathetic taking him back when he loves another woman.”

Annabelle laughs. “My God, you are delusional. You can think what you like because I don’t care what you think.” She takes my hand and smiles down at me while I kiss her hand. Annabelle doesn’t have to say anything else because Maddison huffs and walks away. She doesn’t get far before she spins around to face us.

“Love you baby.” She winks and blows a kiss before walking out of the café. We spot Maddison out of the window meeting up with Brandon. He’s such a mug for believing her lies, but there’s nothing I can do if he won’t listen to me. Brandon wraps his arms around Maddison and they walk away. I look back at Annabelle.

“Are you okay?”

She smiles. “Yeah, I just never realized what a bitch she actually is.”

“I’m sorry, darling.”

She takes my hand again and I stand beside her.

“You don’t have to be sorry. Let’s just go home.” She kisses me on the lips before we make our way to the departure lounge, back to London where we belong…together.

“Are you okay?” I look at Maddison and she’s trying not to cry. She looks upset and I know it’s because of
him.
She told me that she had to talk to him one last time just to get a few things off her chest. She said he was cruel and told her she was nothing and worthless. I hate that asshole so much.

She sniffles before replying, “Yeah, I’ll be fine but he fired me, and I’m not sure what to do now.” She looks devastated and I know how that feels to fall for someone and for them not to reciprocate the feelings. In some way, it happened with Lily and me. All these moments we have, and then she pushes me away. I know deep down that I might love Lily, but I’m beginning to think that it wasn’t meant to be.

Why should I hold out hope for something to happen?

I suddenly have a really random, insane thought running through my head, but the more I think about it, the more I think it could be good.

“Maddison, why don’t you come and stay with me?”

Maddison raises her head and stares at me. “What?”

“Come with me back to Los Angeles. You obviously need the break, and maybe it might be good for you to get away.” She thinks about it for a while.

“I’d have to change my ticket and it might be pricey.” She bites her lip.

“I don’t care. I’ll pay for your ticket…whatever it costs, just to see you smile.” She smiles that beautiful smile before throwing her arms around me.

“You’re the best, Brandon. Thank you so much! I’d love to come to Los Angeles with you!” We pull apart and I freeze when I see Lily standing behind Maddison. Her eyes look glassy and she’s sucking on her bottom lip.

Maddison notices her and smiles. “I’m going to Los Angeles with Brandon.”

Lily nods. “Yeah, I heard.” She looks at me and I think I see pain in her eyes, but I’m not sure because it’s probably wishful thinking. Lily doesn’t say anything else. She hurries away and all I do is watch her go. Maddison grabs my hand and squeals.

“Come on…let’s go and get my ticket changed. I can’t wait!” She drags me along and I follow after her.

“Yeah…sure.” I’m plagued by the look in Lily’s eyes. I’m not sure if I imagined it and it’s annoying me. I might never see her again and we’ve just left it like it is.

Maybe it’s for the best?

I’m so happy to be going home, and in a way, it will be nice to have Maddison around. It gets lonely sometimes not having anyone around, and at least it’ll give Maddison time to get over that lowlife that used her. We change her ticket quite easily, but I have to hand over a large chunk of change, though. I’m just happy that she’s smiling.

“I’m really looking forward to this Brandon.” She bats her eyelashes. “I’m going to really enjoy being with you, too.” She kisses me on the cheek and just as she does, our flight is called. She squeals and pulls me along. I laugh, seeing her excited about going to Los Angeles makes me happy.

I’m so happy in this moment, and I sigh when I get on the plane knowing that I’m going back home and that this holiday is now officially…over.

D.M. Midgley lives in England, UK and is married with two children. At the moment, she is a stay at home mum while her son is still at nursery.

She has been a blogger for about a year and a half and used to admin for ‘Magic Within The Pages’ but in January 2015 she decided to go it alone and set up her own page called ‘Late Night Books and Reviews.’ She loves helping out authors and is really enjoying promoting them on her page. She also Beta reads for a couple of authors and is always happy doing their reviews.

She loves reading and remembers the first book she read on her Kindle was ‘Little Women’ and as a kid she loved reading Disney stories, her favourite was ‘Peter Pan.’

The idea for her debut novel, ‘A Complicated Love’ came about rather abruptly one night in a dream. She wasn't sure whether she could get it down on paper; however with much-needed support by her author friends she has gained motivation and confidence to write her novel. This has greatly helped her inspiration and self-belief to grow.

You can follow her on Facebook and keep up to date with the latest information about her future projects.
