“I did come first!” At his questioning look, Kat pointed downstairs. “Uh, on the kitchen table, remember? And you just made me orgasm again five seconds ago!
Twice
!”

Danny scoffed. “I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about you getting off while I’m fucking you.”

Kat took in his pained expression and, after a brief pause to process his ridiculousness, laughed.

Men and their fragile egos.

“Danny, be serious. I read that sexually-experienced women only orgasm from intercourse twenty percent of the time, so, the chances of that happening the first time were slim to none.” When his expression remained firmly in the
guilt-ridden
zone, Kat couldn’t help but laugh again. “Danny, come on!”

He shrugged again before pulling her into his embrace and burying his face in the crook of her neck. “Whatever. Doesn’t matter. Won’t happen again. I don’t give a fucking shit about any ‘twenty percent,’ either. I’ll make you come off my dick at least one time, every time, or die trying.”

Kat huffed. “First of all, I did ‘come off on your dick’…yeah, it was from the outside, but it’s still the same principle. And, second of all, I’ve been orgasming off you since we met, Danny. I’m pretty sure having
actual
intercourse with you is only going to increase the frequency of it happening.”

His shocked silence and the sudden stillness of his body made Kat smile. And blush like crazy.

Danny slowly lifted his head and met her eyes, his wide. “What do you mean, ‘since we met?’”

“What do you think I mean?” Kat’s lips curled slowly as her eyes widened in faux innocence. “Oh, did I forget to mention that I’ve been indulging in sexual fantasies about you, awake and asleep, since we met?”

Jesus Christ
,
Kat
…” he half-whispered, half-groaned.

“Don’t worry,
caro
. No need to be afraid. I’ll do my best to be gentle in the future.” She tightened her arms and pressed a kiss to his chest, loving the way Danny shivered beneath her lips and hands. “
Sort of
.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

K
at paused, hand
gripping the doorknob, as she turned to meet Danny’s eyes. “You ready?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” He gave Kat what he hoped was a reassuring wink. “Let’s do this.”

Kat opened the door and stepped inside…

“Look who’s finally here! We were starting to get worried about you!”

Danny couldn’t see Marco yet, but he heard him just fine. Kat walked in farther and Danny followed, turning to shut the screen and front doors behind them.

When he turned back around, there were seven pairs of eyes trained right on him in complete silence.

Including Gia’s, that little traitor.

“Well, well, well,” Stella said, smirking from her spot next to Nathan on the couch. She bounced Gia on a knee, head shaking slowly. “Look at what we have here.” Kat rolled her eyes as she pulled off her coat. She tossed it to Marco, who hung it up in the closet. “Knock it off, Stella, okay? Grow up.”

Kat gestured for Danny to take his jacket off and, when he did, she tossed that to Marco, too.

Stella’s brows rose, shoulder lifting. “What? Just trying to figure out what the hell I’m looking at here.” She stared Danny down. “What, with that shit-show last night he put on last night.”

“Oh, you mean the shit-show
you
caused?” Kat shot back.

“What shit-show?” Carlo asked, walking in and looking up from his phone.

Gigi cleared her throat loudly. “Alright, everybody, enough chit-chat! Let’s eat!” She pinched Carlo’s cheek and then patted it as she walked by him. “And don’t say ‘shit-show’ in front of the little ones.” Gigi shot Stella a look. “Just because your
Zia
Stella has a port-a-john for a mouth, doesn’t mean you have to.”

Stella stood and propped Gia on her hip. “As if you don’t, Gigi!” She scoffed. “Maybe we should we talk about the words flying out of
your
mouth at the club last night after
somebody
…” Stella shot Danny another look. “Did
something
to
someone
we love?”

“Let’s go, Stella.” Nathan gave her a few gentle shoves until Stella had no choice but to precede him into the dining room.

Danny made a mental note to hug the hell out of Stella as soon as she forgave him, because if it hadn’t been for her meddling…

Stella turned and gave him a look that kind of scared him.

Maybe I’ll wait to give her that hug.

For about a decade or so.

“Just ignore her,” Kat said quietly, coming to stand next to him.

Nina chose that exact moment to shoot Danny a filthy look as she walked by. Hers wasn’t quite as scary as Stella’s, but it came pretty damn close.

“And her.” Kat rolled her eyes. “I’ll talk to them all later.” She added, “
Crazy people
,” under her breath.

Danny glanced down at her beautiful face, once again blown away by everything they’d done and said last night…by how much things had changed in ways he’d never have allowed himself to hope for.

Danny tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and locked onto her eyes. “And what exactly are going to tell them?”

Kat flushed, clearing her throat. “As little as humanly possible, that’s what.” She grabbed Danny’s arm. “Okay…go time.”

Dinner went as
well as could be expected with Stella and Nina on the warpath. Marco, Gigi, Carla, and Nathan were considerate enough to pretend everything was fine and the kids were clueless. Kat was pretty sure they’d noticed their
zie
giving Danny the
malocchio
, but luckily they seemed pretty disinterested in why.

As it turned out, their two nutty aunts didn’t hold a candle to the Lego Marvel video game that had just been released. Or the huge cassata cake she and Danny had brought from Salvaggio’s Bakery.

After everyone finished their dessert and coffee, Pops stood and said, “So, who wants to see my beautiful new hot water heater?”

Kat eyed him, wondering what he was up to. Pops had a very specific after-dinner routine that consisted of stepping outside to smoke a few Camels before settling into his chair downstairs to watch a rerun or two.

And he never deviated from that routine.

Ever.

Kat shot Stella a look, but she just shrugged.

Nina did the same thing.

But, Gigi?

Well, the guilty look on
her
face told a long and sordid tale.

Obviously Gigi had orchestrated this stupid little charade so the sisters could get Kat alone for an interrogation.

Pops leaned over and clapped Nathan on the shoulder. “Nathan, I know you’re gonna want to see this, right?”

Nathan’s brows furrowed. “Well, I saw it when I installed it…” When Pops’ eyes widened and he jerked his head toward the basement, Nathan nodded slowly. “But, yeah, sure, Pops.” He stood and unlatched Gia’s high chair tray. Nathan pulled off her bib, wiped her hands and face quickly and lifted her to his chest. “Let’s go take another look.” Nathan gestured to Danny. “Come on, Mac. You’re gonna want to see this thing. It’s a real nice forty gallon.”

Kat watched Danny slowly push to his feet. He shot her an inquiring look and she nodded once. A few minutes later, all of the men and children were downstairs, leaving Kat to satisfy enquiring minds.

All by her lonesome.

“Let’s go into the back bedroom,” Gigi said, already ushering people up from the table and down the hallway. “With our big mouths, they’re bound to hear every word.”

Kat waited until all five of them were stuffed into the small bedroom and the door was shut.

She sank to the edge of the bed and shot Stella a look. “Stop being such a bitch to him, Stella. You, too, Nina. He didn’t do anything wrong, so just knock it off.”

Stella leaned forward. “Uh, were we at the same club last night? You were
bawling
, Kat. Hysterically. I have never seen you do that and I never want to see you do it again.”

“What is with you two and cops?” Nina interjected, running a hand over her dark, spiky hair. “I’ve told you, Kat, more than once: Don’t date a fucking cop. They are all egotistical pigs who drink too much and cheat on their wives. Not to mention their girlfriends.”

“Hey!” Stella turned to face Nina. “Can we not generalize here, Nina? Nathan doesn’t do any of that!”

Nina waved off her affront. “Of course not Nathan. But Nathan is…” She paused, blowing out a hard breath. “I don’t know what-the-fuck…but he’s just different. Now,
Danny
?” Nina shook her head again. “That is begging for a world of heartache, Kat.”

“I think Kat can make her own decisions, Nina,” Carla said quietly. “She’s a smart woman and I’m sure she knows what she’s doing.”

Kat shot her a grateful look.

“Come on, Carla! Kat is no match for a man like that!” Nina lifted a hand in Kat’s direction. “No offense, Katters, but you’re not. That man will chew you up, spit you out, and move on to the next Badge Bunny before your head stops spinning. He’s a great guy, but that doesn’t make him relationship material.” She leaned against the wall, arms crossing over her chest. “Just stick to your nerdy dudes at work…’cause, trust me, there is no way you are handling a man like Danny McDonough.”

Kat scoffed. “Well, I seemed to handle him just fine last night.” She absorbed their shocked silence and took in their gaping stares, a tiny smile tugging at her lips. She lifted a shoulder. “Rocked his world…a few times, actually.”

Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and one of the Wise Men
,” Gigi breathed out, dark eyes wide.

“Are you saying you had
sex
with him last night? Is that what you’re telling us right now, Kat?” Nina asked. “Is that what I’m hearing? Because I will go down there and kick his ass from here to Detroit, if that is what you’re saying!”

Stella rolled her eyes. “Easy, Robocop.” She turned back to Kat, a wondrous expression on her face. “Did you really do it, Kat?” When Kat nodded, Stella searched her eyes. “
Oh. My. God
. How was it?”

“Jesus, Stella! Does that really matter?” Nina huffed. “Regardless of how
good
it was, we can’t have our baby sister screwing the king of the frat boys!”

Stella scrunched up her face. “Just…shut up, Nina!” She turned back to Kat, eyes wide. “Tell me how it was. No, first tell me if you’re okay and
then
tell me every single damn detail.”

“I’m fine.” The memories of what they’d done and said flooded Kat’s brain, causing her to grin again like a lovesick teenager. “It was wonderful, actually.”

Nina grabbed the back of her neck, head shaking.

Carla beamed at Kat, nodding.

Gigi was fanning herself like she was about to pass out.

And Stella was now grinning as wide as Kat.

Stella and Kat exchanged a few looks, transferring a bunch of information without saying a word. It was a weird thing they’d been able to do since they were kids and Kat was grateful to relay the gist of what was going to Stella without speaking.

“What are
you
smiling for, Stell? You were as pissed at him as I was two minutes ago!” Nina exclaimed.

“Yeah, but now I forgive him.” She searched Kat’s flushed, probably beaming, face. “Because he loves Kat and she loves him.”

“Oh, for crying out-”

“Let’s let Gigi, Kat, and Stella talk alone, okay, Nina?” Carla said, already tugging on her arm, pulling her towards the door. “We’ve gotta get the girls home to do homework, anyway.”

Nina paused, obviously weighing her options before finally pissing and moaning the entire walk out of the bedroom.

“And you better not say a word to him, Nina!” Kat called after her. “Or I swear to God…”

“I’ll make sure she doesn’t,” Carla said with a smile and wink before she closed the door behind them.

Gigi crouched beside the bed and gathered Kat’s hands in her own. Her dark-brown eyes – so much like their mother’s – held Kat’s tightly. “Are you sure you’re okay,
cara
?”

Kat nodded. “Absolutely. Of course it hurt at first, but we got through it.”

Another warm flush spread across her chest, neck, and face as Kat thought of just how well they’d gotten through it. And how much – despite the residual soreness she was experiencing today – she was dying to do it again.

When Kat smiled, Gigi’s lips slowly curled up, too. “That good, huh?”

“Okay, I am officially dying over here!
Dying
!” Stella threw herself on the bed next to Kat, gripped her shoulders, and turned her upper body so they were face-to-face. “You need to tell me every single dirty, naughty, sweet detail this very minute, Kat! Before my head explodes!”

“I’m not doing that, Stella…gross.” But then Kat grinned again, because she couldn’t seem to stop. “I will say that he was incredibly considerate. And gentle.” She paused, trying to find the right word, but only coming up with a pale, poor substitute for what Danny had been. “And
amazing
.”
