It was clearly time for a change of subject. “I got you a push present,” I told her.
Her face lit up. “And what’s that?”
I handed her the keys. “It’s not a minivan. It’s an SUV. I figured that was a good compromise. The car seat’s in it and everything.”
She looked excited by this news. “So does this mean you’ll teach me to drive?”
“Preferably without Emma in the car.”
“You’re already assuming I’m going to be a terrible driver?” she asked, pretending to be mad.
“I think you’ll be as good at it as you are everything else.” I kissed her hand. “You are amazing, Anabel.”
“I know I said a lot of things while I was in labor,” she began.
“Where did you learn how to talk like that?”
“Oh, shush,” she smiled again. “Anyway I just wanted to let you know I’m not going to kill you. I need you to change diapers.”
“You are truly generous,” I told her. “Do you want me to go get Matt?”
“No,” she said. “This is our moment. Let’s share it, okay?”
And we did.
