“I-I-ah. I was in the, the kitchen. I heard a noise next door – right next door.”
Mrs. Lichtenstein glanced at the charred remains behind her.
“I heard a noise next door and smelt smoke. I don’t know. I don’t know.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No. I just feel dizzy.”
“Is anyone else hurt?”
“I don’t think so. I saw Old Man – ah Albert Smikle my neighbor rushed to Brookdale Hospital. I never thought smoke would bother him with all the cigarettes he has had.”
Kathy stifled a chuckle.
“Well, Robert. There you have it. All is calm otherwise at the scene.”
Kathy stood to her feet and faced the camera.
“This is Kathy Bellamy reporting for Channel 7 news from East Flatbush.”
“Thanks Kathy.”
Kathy disappeared leaving Robert and his jacked up toupee.
“That was our Kathy Bellamy reporting live from East Flatbush. We will keep you updated with the latest at Channel 7 where the news is always first and always best.” The television station announcer piped in.
“Now back to your regularly scheduled program.”
I paid the bill and darted out of Spinner’s.
Chapter 9
As Start darted along Joralemon Street, Blue-Eyes sauntered past their window and noticed him. He went back to the bedroom where his brother was still in bed.
“We watching him and nothing,” said Blue-Eyes.
Green-Eyes lay in the bed with the sheet over his head. He hardly stirred since he was the living dead until coffee met his lips.
“What you care brother. Three Hundred Thousands ‘merican moneys is good-is good. No problem. No fuss. We watch. This all. Watch,” said Green-Eyes still in bed with the covers over his head. He forgot that his brother couldn’t hear a word he said and he didn’t care.
Green-Eyes sat up on the edge of the bed and picked up Donald Duck, the nickname he gave his Magnum whose cop killer bullet sounded like a duck as it whizzed through the air. Green-Eyes’ cell phone rang as John jumped in his car.
Chapter 10
I drove back to 1078 Willmohr and bypassed the fire department’s barrier. This was a little redundant. Now my crime scene was gone up in flames. I stood there looking at the charred remains. The entire building was now to take its place among the burnt out, abandoned buildings in Brooklyn, of which there was many.
1078 would now be the playground of junkies and stray dogs looking for a home. Then in a few years another slumlord would develop it as Section 8 housing.
Mrs. Lichtenstein stumbled over to me.
“Hi detective.”
“Hi Mrs. Lichtenstein. Did you find Noel?”
“Yes I did. He was not home at all. I thought he came in last night but he didn’t. He was by his girlfriend Cheryl.”
Captain Cilantro saw me before I spotted him.
“Start,” said the Captain as he approached me. He nodded to Mrs. Lichtenstein.
“Hi Mam,” he said ever so kindly as he pulled me away.
“I know you think this is a picnic but I have the District Attorney’s Office blowin’ smoke up my-”
“No Sir. It’s not a picnic,” I said intentionally cutting him off.
“Look. Find out who did this. Find something. I want you back at my office by Four.”
He walked away like Robocop. What a bully. He reminded me of that old bully Terrence in Bed Stuy. I hope to God Terrence was dead. There were many nights I had to call to my mamma from the stoop in front of our apartment building to rescue me from Terrence.
Now that I had a licensed gun, I hoped I could run into him in a lonely ally. I would light him like a plastic Christmas tree.
Cilantro. Every time I said his name I felt like opening a bottle of Merlot over a pile of linguini with shrimp marinara. Cilantro had been the captain of the King’s County Police Division for well over twenty-five years. He was a bald head white man, typical of the Italians that took over the police department in the 70’s.
A few things bothered me about the case, but I couldn’t put it together. It was too soon and I just couldn’t get a handle on it. Cases are like fine women they are made over time.
My cell rang. It was Peter Minshall from forensics.
“Yeah Pete, what’s up?” I said.
“Time of death, that’s what’s up. Oraine Rowens died three weeks ago. His last known address was 15 Nostrand Avenue apartment #2F.”
I quickly hung up the phone. 15 Nostrand had my name on it.

One Month Before Victor Died at the Hands of a Vigilante Mob…
“Victor. You’re early,” said Angela. The blonde female waitress walked up to him and gave him a passionate kiss. Victor had just flown to the verandah of Villagio’s Vampire Delights Restaurant.
He smiled flashing his pearly white fangs.
“I’m starved,” he said. “A growing vampire has got to drink.” Angela laughed.
“Growing? You’re over 8,000 years old. Not that much growing left,” said Angela.
He released her from his embrace.
“What do you guys have tonight?” he said as he followed her inside.
She took a pen and pad from her blood smeared white apron.
She ushered him to a booth with a reclining couch and a low table. He sat.
“You vampire’s are so picky,” teased Angela.
“It used to be that any old blood would do.”
“You act as if you are not a vampire too,” he said with a chuckle.
“Lombhardi will be with you shortly,” she said. “You want your usual in the mean time?”
Victor nodded.
“But add a twist of lime,” he shouted to her as she walked away. She turned around walking backwards.
“I get off at 11 tonight so make sure you come for me on time. I have a surprise for you,” she said as she smiled.
“Great. Thrill me,” he said.
“Don’t sound so thrilled. I hardly get to see you,” shouted Angela.
Lombhardi sauntered over to Victor.
“Keeping yourself away are we,” said Lombardi.
“No. Not really. I'm coming off an Isle of Man tour. Trust me they really know how to party over there, and the women-”
“Yes. I know,” Lombhardi interrupted Victor.
“I mean the women are so tasty,” said Victor. “I really wanted to stay but you know I can't miss this year’s Day of the Fall celebrations; had to rush back. I hear they’re having an extended carnival session this year.”
“It’s true. Arch Demon Marlon is officiating this year,” Lombhardi said.
“I’m starving. Whatcha got tonight?” said Victor.
“We have Russian-”
“Boring,” interrupted Victor.
“Italian-”
“Even more boring,” said Victor
“Then there’s Chinese-”
“Mandarin or Cantonese?” Victor asked.
“Mandarin,” said Lombhardi.
“Don’t bother,” said Victor. “Villagio’s is not the premiere vampire culinary specialists it used to be.”
“Oh. We do have a special tonight but I didn’t think you would like it so-”
“What is it?” interrupted Victor.
“Jamaican,” said Lombhardi. “It’s on the spicy side.”
“Perfect. I’ll take it.”
Lombhardi scribbled as Angela returned with his Bloody Mary with a twist of lime. She stared into his eyes and grinned as she placed the drink before him.
“Very well. Let me warn you our Jamaican meal is a challenge to devour,” said Lombhardi with a grimace.
“I’ll take my chances,” Victor said as he picked off the lime slice from the chilled glass and squeezed it into his drink. Lombhardi shrugged his shoulder and left for the kitchen.
“I hear The Son of The Morning Star is appearing at this years Day of The Fall,” said Angela.
“Yeah. I’m sure,” said Victor.
“You don’t sound so enthusiastic,” she said.
“Don’t get me wrong. I am used to being a vampire. The earthly thing, it’s great and all. But I just think the rebellion could have been done successfully. You know. I just think it’s his fault. You know-”
Angela put her hand over Victor’s mouth. Her hand muffled his voice.
“Ssshhhhh. They’ll hear you. Don’t let them hear you spea-”
Victor took her hand from his mouth and smiled.
“I was saying it’s okay. The truth is the truth,” said Victor. “I would have done a better job.”
