Rebecca gives me a hard stare before she finally takes Calvin’s seat. She leans into the table and fixes me with a look. I’m not sure what I’ve done that has her so pissed off, but I have a feeling I’m about to find out…
“You’re surprised to see us here together, aren’t you?” she says.
Her European accent is thicker than I remember, and there’s a threatening edge in her voice.
“What are you talking about?”
Her expression darkens.
“Don’t play stupid with me, you’re not as dumb as you look.”
My eyebrows rise in shocked surprise.
“Excuse me
?
” I say, disbelievingly.
What is this bitch’s problem?
“Don’t act all innocent, you’re not fooling anyone…”
Anger flares inside of me.
“You obviously have something you want to say, why don’t you just go ahead and say it…”
Her eyes sparkle with a fiery, menacing, light.
“Be honest with me…
are you fucking my fiancé?
”
Calvin
I don’t know what game Wade is playing, but by the time we make it to the bar my anger is ready to boil over. Talking to Wade Foster isn’t how I wanted to spend tonight. Tonight is supposed to be all about me and Sofie. Tonight is supposed to be our special night. And now Wade Foster is trying to ruin it with whatever bullshit reason is on his mind.
He’s probably just pissed that Sofie chose the better man.
“What is this about?” I demand, dropping all pretense of politeness.
Wade has his usual stupid, shit-eating grin on his face. It’s there so often that I’m starting to wonder if it’s a permanent part of him. Does he realize it makes him look like an asshat?
“Calvin… We’re friends right?” he says, coolly.
You’ve got to be kidding me.
“My list of…
friends
…is short,” I respond, making it obvious that he’s not one of them.
He nods his head, appreciatively.
“I get it, you’re a busy man… Well, let’s just call this a
professional
courtesy
, then.” I cock an eyebrow, letting him know that I’m listening. “You’re here with Sofie…”
The way he says her name makes me wonder if it’s a question or a statement. I give him a moment to finish his thought. But speaking in complete sentences must not be his thing.
“What about it?”
His shit-eating grin gets even… shittier.
“I’m sure you know she and I were… together…”
What kind of game is he playing here? He better be
very
careful with what he has to say about her.
“She didn’t seem to think it was a very big deal,” I say.
He lets out a douchey, know-it-all, chuckle.
“She’s too modest…”
I frown.
“What are you talking about?”
He holds his hands up in a placating way.
“Hey, I’m not trying to get in your way or anything, I just don’t want there to be any bad blood between us…”
“Why would there be?” I say, harshly. “I asked her, Sofie said there’s nothing going on between you two.”
He barks out a laugh. Obviously he thinks he knows something that I don’t.
“I wouldn’t say there isn’t
anything
going on between us. She doesn’t seem like the kind of girl who just goes sleeping around.”
The world comes to a stop. Every piece of my being narrows in on what he’s saying, and the shit grin on his shit face.
“You slept with her?”
My voice sounds strange. Unprepared. Not mine.
“I stayed at her place just the other night…”
Suddenly, everything comes into focus. In that instant I know exactly how Sofie must have felt all those years ago…
I want to fucking die.
