Alex nodded and held the envelope to her chest.

“Alex you need to discuss this with your husband, like I said before, it’s best to be upfront, you will be surprised,” smiled Melissa. “Take your time and we will be in contact when we have received the contract back.”

Melissa gave Alex a kiss on the cheek. Then there was a knock at the door and Briggs entered the room.

“That’s your lift home, I need to put the blindfold on again, Mr Briggs will help you back to the car and will let you know when to take the blindfold off,” said Melissa and before Alex could answer Melissa had swiftly tied it around her head.

Alex felt the familiar touch of
Mr Briggs and then they were off back to the car. It seemed like they took a different route and that they reached the car in less time.

The car pulled away and after ab

My pleasure Mrs Sterling,” he replied, and with that he turned back around and got in the car and drove away.

Alex walk
ed up the street and turned the corner to their home. The lights were on, Gary was back, she climbed the steps to the door and fished out her keys from her bag and let herself in.

She could hear Gary in the kitchen. Alex placed her bag and coat on the chair by the door, and w
ent into the kitchen. She stood in the doorway and watched: Gary was busy cooking up something that smelled good, she suddenly realized she’d hardly eaten since leaving work and was very hungry.

Gary turned and smiled at her
, “I thought you might be hungry, here sit,” he said and he pulled out a chair.

Alex sat and watched as Gary put
the food on plate; it was penne with Bolognese sauce.

“Did you have a nice evening Alex?”
he said.

Alex looked at Gary and smiled.

“Gary I’m starving, let me eat and then I will tell you everything,” she said.

Gary looked sad for a moment
, and he returned to eating.

“Why don’t you go and have a shower and get ready for bed, we can talk tomorrow if you’re exhausted?” Gary said as he cleared the plates.

Alex nodded and went upstairs to the bedroom; she grabbed her
pyjamas and went into the bathroom. She threw her clothes into the wash basket and stepped into the shower. Letting the warm water run all over her, she reached for the soap and lathered a sponge and washed every trace of sex from her body.

It was late b

“Gary how could you know
?” Gary looked at her, he began to speak but Alex cut him off.

“The only way you c
ould know was if you were there. You were in the room tonight,” she looked at Gary again, searching his face for a reaction. “You were the man! The man with the full mask on . . . No! Gary, please tell me I’m wrong,” she stood up and backed away from him and bumped into the chest of drawers. She froze

“Alex, please
, I can explain,” Gary said.

“Explain
! You knew the entire time and never said a word, I did all that tonight worrying about. . .” Alex stopped and turned round and pulled open the top drawer, she was so angry, she grabbed one of Gary’s shirts and turned round and threw it towards him.

“Get out! Gary
get out, I can’t do this now,” she shouted.

Gary picked up the T-shirt and took a step towards her.

“Alex, you’re tired and upset, I can understand but I need to explain everything to you,” he tried to hold her and calm her down.

“No! Leave. I want you out! Out of this room
and this house, I can’t do this now,” she said, pushing him away.

“Alex, ok I will sleep downstairs. We can talk about this when you
’ve had a chance to calm down,” he said.

“No Gary, I need you to leave, I can’t be in the same house as you right now, why don’t you go to your other house
. You seemed to like it there.”

Gary stopped
trying to argue, he knew there was no reasoning with her in this state.

“Ok, ok”
, he said and put on his shirt. “I will go tonight but I will be back in the morning because we need to talk this through.”

“Please Gary go now.”

She could feel the tears coming but she was not going to cry in front of him, because then he would come over and hold her and she was frightened she would give in and let him stay. He left the bedroom and she heard him go down the stairs. She waited until she heard him pick up his keys. She went to the bedroom window and watched him go towards the car. Gary stopped and looked up, but Alex stepped back so he couldn’t see her, and then he was gone, the car pulling out of the drive. Alex dropped to the floor and sobbed. She felt angry and betrayed. After a few minutes she stopped crying and the anger began to set back in. She replayed the conversation in her head. “I’ll be back in the morning to talk it through,” Gary’s voice repeated in her mind.

I can’t face him
, she thought to herself, and with that she got up and grabbed a suitcase out of the wardrobe. She dressed herself in tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt, and started to throw clothes into the bag. She grabbed her phone charger and threw that in, she went to the bedside drawer and got out her passport and packed it too.

Then she went downstairs
and phoned for a taxi, and asked it to take her to a hotel near the airport. She picked up her jacket and handbag from the chair where she’d left them and placed them next to the suitcase.

She was still shaking when the taxi came; she walked out of the house towards the car and got
in. The taxi driver smiled at her, she smiled back but then looked out of the side window, the driver knew she wasn’t in the mood to chat, and pulled away from the house.
