“Yes. Yes, I will marry you.” She met his gaze with a smile. “Am I going to have to put this on myself?” Logan snatched the box from her and withdrew the ring, taking her hand and putting it on her ring finger.

“We’d better get back to the party—but later on I am going to show you just how happy I am.” He kissed her once more and led her out of the bedroom and towards the backyard, where a roar of childish glee announced that the Science Dude had started his show.

The very last guests—the stragglers—were arriving, and Jessica moved to make sure they were able to take their spots and drop off their presents without disrupting the kids, who watched the demonstration in progress with rapt attention. Gail—with the date she had abandoned Jessica with Logan for—came in nearly last, bearing a big, wrapped box for Logan. They chatted on the way to the present table, and Jessica could barely contain her glee as Gail’s glance fell to her hand. Her best friend grabbed her, bringing the hand—and the ring—up to her face to examine it closely.

“No wonder he was out early the other day!” Gail said with approval. “Oh my god he must have spent a mint on this.” Jessica blushed; the gleaming white gold, the emeralds, and the diamond in the center proclaimed the ring to be very expensive indeed. Jessica recovered her composure; if Logan had wanted to spend a lot of money on her ring, she knew he would have made sure to afford it—while he was sometimes messy and careless, he was very frugal. “When are you going to tell everyone? When did he propose?” Some of the kids, not as close to the makeshift stage that Logan had erected as the others, turned and shushed the two women, and Jessica pulled her friend off to the side, where they could talk quietly.

“He just did it a few minutes ago,” Jessica confided with a broad smile she knew wouldn’t leave her face for the rest of the day. “You’re the first person who knows about it—so you gotta keep your mouth shut. I don’t want to make Zachary’s day about me.” Jessica paused a moment and met her friend’s excited gaze. “I do, however, want to make sure you’ll keep your schedule open. After everything you’ve done for us, I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have as a maid of honor.” Gail hugged her friend, saying yes without words, and Jessica broke away after a few minutes, promising to tell her more later. For the moment, she was more than happy to take up her position next to Logan.

He took her hand in his as soon as she came next to him and gave it a lingering, loving squeeze, while they watched Zachary get called onto the stage. Jessica knew that it wasn’t going to be a perfect relationship; she knew that she and Logan both had their flaws. But she was more confident than ever, happier than she had been since before she had lost Evan, and ready to move forward with her life without her former lover, to really become a part of Logan’s family—and maybe even grow the family bigger.
