CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Olivia Waters was getting rather tipsy. That shouldn’t have been an issue. She had walked to the bar, and so she didn’t need to think about driving home. It was a Friday night and she had the next day off. She should have been free and clear to drink the night away—until David Creely had sat down next to her and started buying them both shots. Until he had shown up looking as handsome as possible and being far more charming than he had any right to be. He kept holding his beer in one hand and looking down to the floor when she said something that made him smile. He would look down, and then when he looked back up at her, he had this smile on his face that was slowly melting her formerly strong resolve.

He made her laugh. He was telling some story about a man, his motorcycle, and an armadillo, and Olivia couldn’t remember the last time she had laughed so hard. She told him about one of her first trips on patrol when she had spent forty-five minutes trying to convince a panhandler to put some pants on unless he wanted to be charged with indecent exposure. But the man just laughed at her threats, ran a few feet away, and shook his bare ass at her before begging for change all over again.

They were incredibly different, but so similar at the same time. It became a game of weights in Olivia’s head. He was a criminal; she was a cop—but they found the same things funny. They liked to do the same sorts of things; they had similar tastes in music and television. She didn’t know which one of the things was supposed to matter more. She wanted them to cancel each other out and leave David and her even—to see where their flirtations would lead them.

Last call came upon them with a great surprise. They ordered one last drink and talked until the bar turned the lights on and sent them out into the night.

“Did you drive?” David asked her. “Because you should not be driving now.”

“No, I walked,” Olivia answered. Once outside she closed her eyes and breathed in that desert smell. She never regretted moving down here. She loved the weather and the look of the place, the large empty spaces that went on for miles in every direction.

“Can I walk you home?” David asked.

“As long as you promise that this isn’t some elaborate hit on me,” Olivia answered with a wan smile.

“No offense, Officer Waters. But that seems like a lot of work to go through for a beat cop.”

“Fair enough. And you should call me Olivia,” she answered, walking towards her apartment a little unsteady on her feet. David matched her pace, walking casually by her, his long legs easily keeping up. His hands were jammed in his pockets, and his eyes were on the expanse of sky above them. Stars as far as the eye could see. They’d traveled through the deep reaches of space solely, it seemed, to add an ambience to the evening walk.

The streets around them were silent and empty, only the occasional car drove past, appearing and disappearing quietly. The night was cool, and Olivia enjoyed the feeling of the cool air as it poured over her shoulders, down her back, and over her bare legs. She looked over at David and found that he was looking at her, a mischievous grin on his face. For the last few hours she had been able to forget that she was a cop and he a gang member. She had gotten to know the man behind the bike, and she had liked what she found.

“Well, this is me,” she said, gesturing to her tall building. David stood in front of her and then took a step closer until he was less than a foot away. It was their meeting in Hillary’s trailer all over again. Except they weren’t in some gross trailer. They were outside on a beautiful night with a thousand stars all above them.

And unlike the trailer, David didn’t hesitate or second-guess himself. He leaned forward and kissed Olivia gently, placing his lips on her for just a second. He waited for her to hit him or kick him, but instead, she leaned forward and kissed him back.

David’s hands came up and wrapped around Olivia, caressing her back. His tongue slipped between her lips and met hers, and he pulled her even closer against him. Her hands were on his arms, and she bit gently on his lower lip, and David groaned in response.

Finally, she pulled away from him and then looked up into his eyes. “Is this all some trick to kill me, or discredit me or something?” she asked.

“No,” David answered, gently brushing her hair out of her eyes. “I want you.”

Olivia wanted him, too. She desperately wanted him. She hadn’t ever met a man like this, one so confident and handsome. She knew it was a bad idea, but at that moment, she didn’t care. No one would ever have to know. She pulled herself free of David’s arms and opened the door to her apartment building. She looked back at him, as she opened the door and motioned for him to follow.

In the elevator, they picked up right where they had left off. David’s mouth was on hers, their tongues mingling, and his hands moving up and down her body. They quickly walked to her door, and she undid the locks and ushered him inside her dark apartment. He kissed her again the second they were inside; his hands and mouth were desperate now. Finally, she pulled away from him and motioned for David to sit on the couch.

She stood in front of him, her skin glistening with sweat, as she reached down and undid the strap on her right sandal and then the left, stepping out of her shoes. She glanced up at David and saw that he was watching her, not leering, watching. With great dedication and all of his attention, he was watching her. Olivia’s heart began to pound; it was too much being under that gaze of his.

She reached down and undid the top button of her shorts and then slid the zipper down. She slid her shorts over her hips, and they fell to the ground in a pool at her feet, exposing the pink panties she was wearing underneath. Then, she reached underneath her shirt and unclasped her bra, pulling her arms free of the straps and then letting that fall as well so she was standing in front of David in nothing but her thin tank top and a pair of panties.

He reached forward and put his hand on her hip, pulling her forward. She was right in front of him when she became aware that she had no idea what was going to happen. She didn’t know what he was going to do, but she desperately wanted to know. He brought his mouth to her hip and kissed her there. She could feel the press of his lips against her sensitive skin, and she shuddered from the contact.

He brought his hands up to her arms and then pulled her down until she was on her knees in front of him, kneeling between his legs. She reached up and tugged at his shirt, and he pulled it over his head revealing his well-toned body. His hands had reached up under her shirt and were grabbing and caressing her breasts. Wordlessly, Olivia brought her hand up and ran it over his torso, running her fingernails up and down the length of him, stopping just when she reached his belt.

There was a sudden loss, as he pulled his hands off of her breasts.

“Come here,” he said, leaning back. Olivia stood up and then brought her legs up on either side of him, straddling him on her couch. He put his hand under her chin and guided her mouth to his. His lips were dry, but his tongue tasted like whiskey as he kissed her gently at first, one peck, then another. And then it grew more intense as his tongue found hers, and his arms wrapped against her, pulling her tight against him as they kissed deeply. Olivia felt her body begin to grind against David’s. She could feel his erection through his pants, and he moaned when she brushed against it.

He relaxed his grip and pulled away from her, grabbing her shirt, pulling it over her head, throwing it somewhere in the room. He began to kiss her neck—biting, sucking, and licking his way down and over her shoulder. Olivia’s skin felt like it was on fire; his every touch was so pleasurable. His hands and legs and mouth were all working together so well that it was almost unbearable.

Olivia gasped for breath and pulled away from him, but he wasn't ready to let her go. His hand was on the back of her neck, and he pulled her close to him and whispered, “I want you,” as his other hands worked its way underneath her panties and began to stroke her lightly.

“Yes,” she answered breathlessly, as she closed her eyes and leaned into his feathery light touch between her legs. He shifted in his seat and gently pushed Olivia down until she was on her back on the couch looking up at him. He pulled at her panties, pulling them down over her hips, knees, and ankles—until she was finally free of them.

He was between her knees, looking at her. “You look beautiful,” he said as he undid his belt and then the button on his trousers. Standing, he removed them and his boxers. He stood before her, fully erect. Olivia reached out with one hand and grazed her fingers over his member, feeling it twitch from her touch as he closed his eyes and sighed.

Then, he reached out and stopped her hand, looking down at her he said, “I want to see you touch yourself. I know you want to. I know your body aches for it, so just reach down and touch yourself.”

He was right her body was aching to be touched. She was wet and desperate for any sort of touch and so she trailed her right hand down over her breast and down her stomach and then down even farther. Her practiced fingers slipping easily between her folds. Her fingers found that spot inside of her that longed to be touch, and she rubbed it in gentle circles, feeling her orgasm build up quickly inside of her. She was too self-conscious to look at David, too nervous and worried about what she would see on her face, but as her moans grew louder, she glanced up at him. David was staring at her intently. His erection was even harder than it had been before. His eyes met hers, and he said, “Keep going.” She wasn’t sure how much more she could go; she was close, so close. She was nearing the tipping point, and she couldn’t quiet her moans or cries any longer.

“Stop,” David said, and she did. She gasped for breath and took her hand away even while her body was screaming for more. She was still on her back, looking up at him, unsure what going to happen next. “Turn over,” he said. Olivia swallowed and then sat up before turning over until she was on her hands and knees. She heard David settle in behind her and then gasped as he plunged two fingers into her. She couldn’t help as her body wriggled against him, desperate for contact.

It was a second later that she felt his penis at her entrance. His left hand was resting on the small of her back, his other on her hip as he pushed himself inside of her and Olivia gasped at the sensation. She could feel all of him inside of her. She could feel every inch of him against her inner walls, and she shuddered as he began to move back and forth, thrusting himself into her and then pulling all the way out.

His touched picked up right where hers had stopped, and Olivia moaned as her body rocked with his. His member was touching her in just the right place. Every stroke was like a touch of fire against her, sparking her nerves and making her want him even more. She pushed back against him and heard him moan in response.

“Yes,” she whispered. She was so close to finishing, so close to orgasm, and at that moment, she needed it more than anything. “Yes, that feels so good...yes.” Her pleasure was like a giant wave inside of her growing higher and higher with each thrust that David made. It was too much; it felt too good. She needed that release, so she pushed back against him harder, and his body pushed back. He moaned her name, as his hands slid up and down her back. Her body took control, pushing against him harder and faster as it strove for release. Then, with one last thrust the wave could grow no higher, and she felt her orgasm rush over her. She screamed out his name, as she felt him give one last, deep thrust, and her body shuddered against him, as wave after wave of pleasure broke over her—until, finally, she was spent.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Bright light was shining on David’s face, waking him from the deepest sleep he’d had in a long time. His left arm was wrapped around Olivia, holding her tight against him. She was asleep on her side, still naked underneath her light, white sheets. The clock said it was nine o’clock in the morning, but it felt earlier to David. He leaned over and kissed Olivia gently on the back of her neck and pulled her closer.

He didn’t want to get out of the bed. If he did, then the spell would be broken. They wouldn’t be two people who had met at a bar and shared a connection. They would be enemies. They were enemies. David could still remember staring into this apartment with binoculars, watching Olivia as she moved about her space. But now he was here, in her apartment, next to her. His body still reeling from what they had done the night before. He wanted to spend the rest of his life in this bed with her. They could sit in the living room and from the windows watch the battle between their two sides, cops and God’s Reapers. They could align themselves with the victor; skip over all the messy stuff.

But no, that would never happen. Neither he nor Olivia would ever sit on the sidelines. They would both be in the advanced guard, the first to go over the wall and enter the battle. That was where the glory was and they both knew it. It was an unspoken thing they both had in common; it was part of the reason he was so drawn to her. Olivia stirred next to him, and he buried his face in her neck one last time, memorizing the taste and smell of her skin.

“Hi,” she said sheepishly, sitting up and running her hand through her messy hair.

“Good morning,” David said, sitting up as well. Her bare back was exposed and David couldn’t help but run his hands up and down it, feeling goosebumps rise from his touch.

“So...last night was fun, but probably not the best idea,” she said, glancing back at him.

“Oh, I don’t know. I thought it was a great idea,” David said, his hand still on her back.

“A good idea on a Friday night usually turns into a disaster on Monday morning,” she said getting up. David’s hand lingered on her skin until she was out of his reach. She strode across the bedroom towards her door where a bathrobe hung. David got one last look at her long legs and flat stomach before she covered herself up.

With a sigh, David too got out of bed and began to dress himself. “It doesn’t have to be like that, you know. We don’t have to be enemies,” David said. He needed a way to make her see reason. She needed to understand that looking the other way while the Reaper’s conducted their business was the best and safest option for her.

“No one can ever know that this happened,” Olivia said. “No one.” David couldn’t help but notice that she hadn’t answered his question. Maybe they could find a way to make it work. Unless of course she saw something and arrested a Reaper, if that happened things would be bad for Olivia, very bad, and there would be no way for David to help her.

“Don’t worry, Olivia,” he said. “I can keep a secret. I won’t tell anyone.” He was fully dressed but barefoot, and she was in nothing but her robe. How easy it would have been for her to let that robe fall to the floor, for David to take his clothes off, and for the two of them to fall back into each other. She might have been right about bad decisions, but it wasn’t Monday yet, they had the whole weekend still.

David couldn’t help himself; his eyes were in charge of his legs. He walked over to Olivia and ran his thumb along the edge of her robe, his touch gliding across her skin. He wanted to rip off her robe and throw her back into bed. His hand continued its way down, traveling over her breast and down her stomach until it caught on the belt to her robe. He looked up at her, and he could see the longing in her eyes. However, her resolve was strong, and she tightened her belt and closed her robe, looking away from him while she did it.

“We don’t have to stop,” David said. “If we don’t tell anyone, what’s the harm?”

“I could lose my job; you could get kicked out of your club. It’s a bad idea all around. It was fun, but that’s all it can ever be. One fun night,” Olivia said, her voice was firm, and David understood that there was no point in haranguing her. Besides, he knew that one way or the other, life would push the two of them together. She was probably right that it didn't make any sense for the two of them to spend any more time together. It would only make doing their jobs harder.

David walked into the living room and slipped into his shoes. It was strange to be in her living room instead of looking at it through binoculars. He had imagined himself sitting on that couch with Olivia next to him; he had remembered the spray of flowers, now replaced with white lilies. He hadn’t told anyone about his Peeping Tom activities, and he had no plans to tell anyone in the future. He imagined Olivia would be pretty furious if she found out. He walked over to the long windows and stared down into the street, already busy with the hustle and bustle of the residents of Marina’s Crest, getting their errands in before the heat of the day really set in.

He turned back around and faced Olivia, noting the sad expression on her face that she was trying to hide. He didn’t know what to say. He wanted to stay; he wanted to be with her. But he had other loyalties. He had made promises and taken oaths; blood oaths that could never be broken. He couldn't throw all that away for a girl; he wouldn’t be one of those guys who walked away from his promises when something pretty caught his eye. He was more than that.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you in the streets, Officer Waters,” David said, giving her a salute. She smiled at that, which was something at least. David left, closing the door behind him quietly. As he walked to the elevator, he kept hoping that Olivia would change her mind and call for him and invite him back inside. But she was made of stronger stuff than that, and without any delays, he got in the elevator and pushed the button for the first floor.

On his way back to his bike, still parked outside of The Gray Lamp, David couldn’t help but go over the events of the previous night in his mind. The taste of her lips, the scent of her skin, the way she had touched herself. The way her hands had traveled over his skin, the way she had driven him wild. Was it possible that this could really be it? That they might never kiss or touch like that again? David had never had a night like that. He had never met a woman like Olivia, and now he was supposed to just walk away.

Things would be different with Olivia now. They had to be. After the night they shared, it was impossible that she would still look at him as just another biker. Now, maybe, when he told her to look the other way, she would trust him and do it. She had to understand that he just wanted to protect her. This could all be so good for her. She could have money and safety; she just had to say yes. Unless her pride wouldn’t let her. Her pride and the promises she had made as a cop. Normally, in David’s world, sex cleared things up. If there was a girl hanging around the club who David was into, once he slept with her, that meant that she was his and it was hands off for everyone else. But Olivia wasn't in the club, and she had kicked him out of her apartment pretty quickly without even giving him a phone number. David sighed. He had gone to The Gray Lamp hoping to get Olivia Waters out of his system, but the opposite had happened. She was inside of him, running through his veins and complicating his life, and it was just making him want her more.
