Founded in 1879, the AIA is dedicated to the greater understanding of archaeology, the protection and preservation of the world's archaeological resources and the information they contain, and the encouragement and support of archaeological research and publication.
A non-profit-making cultural and educational organization, it is chartered by the US Congress and is the oldest and largest archaeological organization in North America. In 1995, its membership was approximately 11000.
The AIA has its headquarters in Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. It publishes the magazine
Archaeology
and the
American Journal of Archaeology
, as well and an annual bulletin of archaeological opportunities around the world, a newsletter, and monographs. There is an annual meeting at which professionals present the latest results of archaeological fieldwork and research, mainly in the classical domain.

In the administration of legislation and related guidance a site or object is said to have archaeological interest if is capable of contributing to the scientific or humanistic understanding of past human behaviour, cultural adaptation, or related topics through the application of scientifically based or scholarly techniques such as structured observation, contextual measurement, controlled collection, analysis, interpretation, and explanation.

In North American archaeology this term refers to areas which exhibit a degree of cultural homogeneity in a particular period. Often defined by appropriate topographical features such as drainage systems, coastlines, or upland plateaux.

Any material remains of the past which offer potential for archaeological investigation and analysis as a means of contributing to the understanding of past human communities.
