Local representation of the Phoenician goddess Asarte as worshipped at
CARTHAGE
, sometimes referred to as ‘the face of Ba’al'. The symbol of Tanit is a truncated cone surmounted by a disc. In a precinct dedicated to her were buried jars containing the cremated remains of infants sacrificed to her.

tannery

An industrial area where animal hides (raw hides) are converted into leather by soaking in a liquid containing tannic acid or by the use of mineral salts. Archaeologically, tanneries of whatever scale are represented by one or more large pits or soaking vessels, together with such ancillary buildings or structures as were used for preparing and storing the hides and finished leather.

Coastal region of Bohuslän which contains a major concentration of Bronze Age rock art sites. The panels are mainly on glacially smoothed rock surfaces and include depictions of ships, ploughing scenes, warriors armed with spears and battle-axes, carts, and possibly sun discs. Ships with fighting warriors standing within them and numerous oars for propulsion are especially distinctive.
