He shrugs
.

I guess I can handle that.

  I laugh
as he
leans over and kisses my cheek, but he doesn

t move away, instead he moves closer, leaning me back against my car.  Gingerly
,
he brushes a strand of my hair away from my neck, slowly he starts kissing me from my cheek
all the way
down my neck
passionately.  His
desiring hands run
down my hips I feel my pulse quicken and I place my hands on his chest, pushing him gently away.

I

m sorry
,

he whispers to me, I hold my breath for a mo
ment, grasping some
compos
ure
.

I whisper back to him,

I

m not your girl any
more
, you can release me now.

I turn around to get into my car.  David takes a few steps back.

I

ll see you soon
,

h
e says
as he slip
s his hands in his pockets and watches me drive away.

Since I have a
drudging
hour
of driving to get home, I turn on the radio and listen to a song

Jar of Hearts

that has me in tears
within the first five seconds
.  Finally
,
I can

t take it any
more;
I turn it off and drive in silence the rest of the way.

Chapter 8

The next day
,
I sleep half the day away.  We may be witches and don

t have to worry about illness or diseases
,
but we sure can

t stay up for like twenty
-
four hours straight and not feel
a little worn down.

My cell is what wakes me up, it

s Megan
.

Hey there Alyssa, David took me straight home last night,
and so
my car is still at the track.  Any chance I can get a ride down there.  It

s killing me without my ride.

Sure Meg, give me a bit and I

ll be over.

I shower, grab a piece of fruit
,
and go pick her up.

We pull into the race
way and park by her Porsche.

He told me about last night, I guess you really are moving on, huh?

Megan asks
staring out of the windshield and then back to me
.

Yea
h
, I

m ready to live life and not wo
rry about the whys all the time,

I say with resolve.

I understand, call me later, if you want.

Megan smiles a keep
-
your
-
chin
-
up kind of smile
a
s she gets out of my car.  She has always known
the right things to say and the right time to say them.  She is never one to pry and if you want to talk she is right there.  I watch her walk over to her car and follow her out of the raceway.

I

m b
ack at Hutchington once again, walking down the
desolate
hall.  I must have been out of it because I didn

t even feel the charg
e of energy in the air until Lisa
bumps my arm.

Hey, how are you doing?

I know my friends just want to make sure I

m
okay
;
I just want to forget about it.

I smile reassuringly at her and say,

I

m good.

I

ll see you at lunch, okay?

  Lisa smiles brightly.

Okay.

I walk into first hour.  Marc usually sits three rows in front of
me;
today he is sitting directly in front of me.  He looks over his shoulder and gives me a roguish smile.

Smiling back at him playfully
, I
say
,

So, first you have car problems, and now you are having seating arrangement problems, huh?

He laughs and replies
,

Yea
h
, some power of the universe keeps pushing me towards you.

  He smiles innocently back.  I

m starting to enjoy his company, a lot.  That last thought scares me to death, but on the other hand I am very interested in seeing how things unfold.

After class I ask,

Are you able to come to the track this Friday or did other plans get in the way?

He walks with me through the congested halls looking at me and
says
,

How could I turn down the mysterious blue eyed girl?

I laugh at him and roll my eyes.
As we continue walking together he
suddenly realize his next class is in the other
direction, s
o we go our separate ways.
My other classes go by without inciden
t
and I soon find myself sitting in fourth hour.

Marc isn

t in class yet like he usually
is so
I begin
scanning the room.  I look over towards the door and see him with his back to me.  Someone is standing in front of him and it appears that whatever they are discussing is getting pretty heated.  I don

t boast about having supersonic hearing
,
but I can hear better than the norm.

Look, you

r
e
gonna have to back off, we are not dating
anymore
and I like it that way,

h
e says as he shifts his bag from one shoulder to the other using it to put distance between them.

Marc, just one date, you

l
l see that we are
really
good together
,

t
he girl pleas as she grabs his shirt and tugs on it.

I

m not joking, this has got to stop, just leave me alone.

He says as he pushes her hand away.

Just answer my calls next time.

She spins around and walks away.

That

s when I decide to tune them out.  I know a similar story and I really d
o
n

t need to get involved
another one
.

F
inally
,
he
turns from her and walks into class.  I quickly turn my head and randomly flip the pages of my book.  He walks over next to me and sits down, we both look at each other and smile
but
then class starts, thankfully.

After c
lass
is over
I stand up abruptly, gathering my t
hings, when he asks attentively,

Are you
okay
?

Yea
h,
couldn

t be better.

He laughs at me as if he didn

t believe me.

What?

I ask peering at him with one hand on my hip in an offended manner.

He says
,

The whole class heard Kelly and I, right?

I really didn

t think

the whole

class heard, they were talking quietly until the end of the conversation.

I
give him a confused, dazed look.

What do you mean?

He laughs again shaking his head.

You know
you

re
not a very good liar.

He stands up and we walk out of the room together.

Walking
to our next class
he explains further
,

Kelly and I
dated for about eight months, we were friends before that.  There just isn

t anything there and I don

t like doing things for the sake of just doing, so we broke it off.  At least I broke up with
her;
she still tries to get things going again.  Its just not gonna happen.

Kelly is the
head
cheerleader and she wants things back the way they were.
” He glances at me as we drift through the halls.

I can relate to what
you

re
going through,

I say as we walk together in silence.  It feels good to be so close to someone without having to speak and still enjoy their company.  My next class is actually right across the hall from his.

I

ll catch you later.

He grins and we both walk into our classes.

I finish getting my things after class and walk out, and who do I find?  Why
it

s
Marc leaning casually against the wall.  I smile and peer at him questioningly

Aren

t you tired of me yet?

He j
oins me as I walk down the hall.

Absolutely...not, I mean
,
how can
I b
e,
I barely know anything about you.  Alyssa, it

s taken me all day to get just t
wo bits of information from you,

h
e
says grinning playfully.

Oh, really,

I
say a little taken back
.  “A
nd that would be
?

I ask.

He maneuvers his backpack over
to
his other muscular shoulder and replies,

That… you have been in a fairly recent relationship and you go to the race track on the weekends.

He replies with a flirtatiously raised brow.

I place a hand on my hip and ask,

And that

s not enough for you, is it?

He pushes the door open for us to walk
through
.

Nope, it

s not.

He says smiling down at me.

***

Sighing out in relief,
I

m
pleased to finish the last grueling class for the day.  I still
feel a bit out of place being in a public school and away from other witches.
Being around the other witches over the weekend just makes me miss not being able to use my own powers more.  At the Arcane
it

s
all about the magick, our elements, and the new found abilities within us.
