My trio of editors, Chris Kloet, Suzanne O’Sullivan and Sue Whiting, suggested that perhaps leaving a certain part of the book out would be better for the story. Of course they were right. Special thanks go to Suzanne and Sue, whose ideas did much to shape the story and whose support and continued enthusiasm were such a great help. Their patience, gentle insistence and plain hard work have transformed this book into what you hold in your hand. Thanks also to Jess Owen, whose careful reading cut down on the dreaded repetition of words we shall not mention.

Gratitude must also go to Sarah Foster, who helped cut through the muddle I was having over the beginning and reassured me that what I thought in my gut was right, and whose continued advocacy of Rosie’s story is such a joy.

Thanks must also go to Amanda Lines, who never tires of reminding me that it’s all going to be okay, and my family, who are not above shifting my books to the front of bookstores or talking loudly about them in public. To my husband, Grant, who has always supported me and makes sure I’m not a hermit. And my faithful dog, Jake, who has missed out on many walks for this book without complaint and who will probably not be around for the next one. Hunt well in doggie heaven, my dearly loved scout.
