“Can I have
time to think about this, Farrah?” She asked nervously.
“I’m afraid,
my dear, that I am going to need an answer tonight. If you can’t
decide, this opportunity will never be presented to you again.”
Keilani
scanned the picture frames that lined the walls of her room. There
was one of her and her older brother playing volleyball at the
beach and another of the time the entire family took a trip to
Niagara Falls. Then she looked out the window at the destruction
that had ravaged her neighbourhood; now only a shadow of the
wonderful place where she had grown up, but she still held hope
that things would get better. Keilani was torn.
Chapter 46
: The Fate of Fairyland
Farrah looked
on nervously. She knew that she had laid all of her cards on the
table. If this didn’t work, there would be no hope of convincing a
single human child about Fairyland, yet alone a thousand.
With each
passing minute that Keilani said nothing, Farrah became even more
nervous. The girl had taken a picture of her mother off the wall
and held it lovingly in her hands. A tear dripped slowly down her
cheek. Farrah knew that asking Keilani to leave her home was a
massive decision and by the emotion on Keilani’s face, Farrah could
feel her internal struggle.
Placing the
picture back on the wall, Keilani turned to face the fairy.
Farrah’s heart thumped loudly in anticipation of what Keilani was
going to say next.
“Do I have
time to pack?” Keilani asked, shooting Farrah a smile.
Instinctively,
Farrah rushed up to Keilani, threw her arms around her and gave her
a bone-crushing hug. Farrah whispered softly into Keilani’s
ear.
“Thank you, my
dear Keilani. I know that you are nervous now, but trust me you
have made the right decision. All of Fairyland will be forever
grateful. Oh, and don’t worry about packing too much, all that you
need will be provided to you when we get to Fairyland.”
Farrah helped
Keilani pack a knapsack full of pictures, jewellery and other
belongings that Keilani thought too precious to leave behind. With
the knapsack slung over Keilani’s shoulder, Farrah grasped her
other hand and led her into the closet. In a flash, they appeared
in the backyard where Bella was already waiting.
“Keilani, I
want to introduce you to Bella.”
“Wow, sweet
ride,” said an overjoyed Keilani as she stroked Bella’s head.
“Ah, but she
is more that just a ride, she is my dearest friend,” responded
Farrah as she patted Bella’s back. She tied Keilani’s knapsack to
Bella’s saddle and helped her onto her back. Farrah swung herself
in front of Keilani and turned to look at her.
“Are you ready
for the biggest adventure of your life?”
Keilani took
one last look at the only home she had ever known. Her eyes then
fell on the burning fires off in the distance before her home. She
wondered how much longer her house would remain standing. Although
worried about the safety of her family, she was confident that
Farrah would do everything in her power to save them.
Wiping a tear
from her eye, she turned her gaze back to Farrah.
“You bet
ya!”
With those
words, Farrah motioned for Bella to depart. Within seconds, they
were soaring in the clouds, quickly leaving earth behind.
Chapter 47
: Kicking Some Serious Butt
Farrah gained
more and more confidence over the next few weeks. As a result, she
convinced over three dozen human children to join her in Fairyland.
She had discovered one trick in particular to be most useful when
trying to convince a human child of Fairyland’s existence. It was
called the Cazunta spell.
Although it
took some convincing, Farrah would sprinkle some Pixie Dust onto a
bed sheet and throw it up into the air. With the sheet draped over
the child, they would be teleported to whatever place that they
imagined. Although it was merely an illusion, the performance of
the Cazunta spell had become a sure-fire method to convince a child
about Fairyland’s existence. The spell had also provided Farrah
with hope that she would be able to achieve her goal.
The Queen was
also encouraged as the newest fairies made seamless transitions
into the Fairyland community. She had even offered to hold a huge
celebratory feast in honour of Farrah, but Farrah declined, wanting
instead to continue with her mission. Although Farrah was hopeful,
she knew that she still had a lot of work ahead of her.
*****
As Farrah held
the Veddo up to her face atop Mount Michelutz, she immediately
noticed the CN tower. She hopped onto Bella’s back and within
seconds, they stood before the massive tower. Standing mere inches
from the base, Farrah realized just how devastated the tower
was.
Although it
remained in tack, many of the windows at the top of the tower had
been shattered. Upon closer inspections, Farrah also noticed
hundreds of splintered cracks that weaved up the shaft of the
tower. Fearing that the tower would collapse, she continued down
the block.
With Bella by
her side, Farrah walked toward the home of her next subject.
Although, she was perfectly capable of flying on her own, with the
help of the Star of Fantaseea, she decided to continue to bring
Bella along for companionship.
The home was
that of a boy named Bruce who lived in a not-so-well-off part of
Toronto.
“
8686 Palice Cr. – this must be it,”
she said to herself as she walked into the
backyard to prepare for the teleportation. Farrah could tell by the
outside of the house that Bruce’s family didn’t have much money.
The shingles on the roof were torn and curled upwards and the paint
was peeled to the point that the colour was no longer recognizable.
Even the grass was a yellow colour, not being watered in weeks. Of
course, that was nothing compared to the destruction around others
parts of the neighbourhood. More than a dozen homes had been
levelled into non-existence.
When Farrah
teleported into the closet, she was surprised to find it was bare.
Only two tattered sweaters hung from the rod, one with so many
holes that it looked more like Swiss cheese than an article of
clothing.
“
If anyone could benefit from a change, it would be
Bruce,”
whispered Farrah
to herself as she looked at Bruce’s empty room. Neither a blanket
nor a pillow could be seen with Bruce curled up on his bed.
Although it was dark, Farrah noticed that he was holding his tooth
in his hand. She gently placed her hand atop his and when he
released his grip, the tooth fell into her palm. Farrah gave a
little cough, which seemed to do the trick. Bruce awoke from his
sleep and sat up on his bed.
As usual,
Bruce did not believe that Farrah was a Tooth Fairy. Making quick
work of the Cazunta spell however, Bruce was quick to change his
mind. Just to be sure, Farrah walked Bruce over to the window so
that he could get a glimpse of Bella. Always the performer, Bella
did some backflips causing Bruce to laugh.
It only
took a half hour to convince Bruce to come along with Farrah. As
she suspected, he
was
in desperate
need of a change. Eager to start his new life, Bruce didn’t pack a
single thing to take along with him. Instead, he walked directly
into the closet and awaited his new friend. When they appeared in
the backyard, Bruce ran up to Bella and jumped onto her saddle.
Farrah was about to do the same when she spotted someone lurking
about behind a tiny shed in the backyard.
Farrah slowly
walked toward the shed when someone that popped out from behind
startled her. It was Samantha and she was holding her bag of Pixie
dust.
“I’ve got you
now, Farrah,” said Samantha snidely.
“What are you
doing here?” Asked Farrah calmly, not wanting to aggravate her.
“Silly fairy,
I’ve come to stop you!” Remarked Samantha, as she dug her hand into
her pouch.
“Stop me, why
in all of Fairyland would you want to do that, Samantha?”
The fairy took
out a large mound of dust and walked slowly toward Farrah.
“I’m doing you
a favour, my naive friend. After all, there is no way that you, a
human, could possibly think that you’d be the one to solve all of
Fairylands problems?”
Farrah could
feel the anger filling up inside her as Samantha continued.
“Ahh yes, I
know everything, Farrah. Thanks for confirming just how useless
Ordinaria fairies are by the way.”
Farrah made a
half-hearted attempt to lunge at Samantha. With a quick side step,
Farrah fell to the ground. Laughing, Samantha continued in her
mocking tone.
“When it is
all said and done, it will be the Superiora that will survive,
leaving the Ordinaria to disappear. Fairyland will be better than
ever!”
Already
angered beyond control, the next words out of Samantha’s mouth
infuriated Farrah like never before.
“Why do you
think I hired those Pirate Fairies to steal your loot of 137
teeth?”
“Why you…”
Farrah rose
from the ground slowly, her fists clenched, ready to strike when
she noticed that it wasn’t normal Pixie dust that Samantha was
holding in her hands. Picolotto had given the Octo dust to her.
“Yeah, that’s
right, it wasn’t just the loot of teeth that the pirates took that
night?” Samantha informed, taking pleasure in Farrah’s nervous
expression as she backed away.
“As you
already know, this is the most powerful Pixie Dust ever made. One
pinch could level this entire city.”
Unexpectedly,
Samantha sprinkled some dust into her cupped palm, raised it up to
her face and breathed in deeply.
“Samantha,
no!” Shouted a terrified Farrah, but it was too late. Samantha had
blown the dust out of her palm and into the air. Within seconds,
the bright sun disappeared and the sky turned to darkness.
Thunderclaps could be heard off in the distance and then the ground
began to shake. It felt like an earthquake. There was a large crack
and then the ground began to split between Farrah’s feet. She
quickly jumped out and down to the ground, but the crack spread
like fire toward Bella and Bruce. Although Bruce was able to jump
off her back, Bella wasn’t as fortunate. She had fallen down deep
into the massive crack.
Farrah rushed
first to Bruce on the ground. Although a little groggy, he seemed
to be all right. A more pressing concern was the status of her
friend as she peered down into the opening. At first, she was
relieved to see that it was not too deep. Her relief then turned to
devastation as she noticed a stream of blood that poured out from
under Bella’s body. Farrah quickly dove into the hole, landing next
to Bella who lay motionless on her side.
Chapter 48
: Off Track
Farrah wiped
the dirt form her face and crouched down next to Bella. She was
still breathing, although barely. Farrah was stroking Bella’s belly
as she lay sideways on the ground, when she spotted Samantha. She
was looking down into the hole, Octo Dust sparkling in her right
hand, when she momentarily disappeared. With no time to feel
petrified, Farrah returned her attention to the injured Bella.
Farrah thought
feverishly about any spell that would help to heal her friend. She
was about to reach for the star when she was interrupted by clumps
of dirt falling from overhead. Samantha had rolled Bruce’s limp
body dangerously close to the edge of the hole. Farrah’s heart sunk
as she looked up at Samantha, whose foot was firmly planted onto
Bruce’s chest.
“Why are you
doing this Samantha?” shouted Farrah, which was barely audible over
the loud thunderclaps and relentless rain that fell.
“Well, let’s
put it this way, Farrah, I have a better plan to save Fairyland.”
Samantha replied as she slowly rubbed the Octo Dust into her hands
once again.
“Unlike your
silly plan to repopulate Fairyland, my plan is to downsize.”
“What on
Fairyland are you talking about?” Screamed a panicked Farrah as
Bella’s breathing was becoming even fainter.
“My plan is to
get rid of all the useless Ordinaria fairies in fairyland. With you
human-blooded fairies out of the way, we Superiora will be able to
flourish. Your kind will no longer hold us back. We will achieve
ultimate power like we have been destined too and we will rebuild
Fairyland better than ever.”
When Samantha
lifted her cupped hand up to her mouth, Farrah took her chance. She
quickly grabbed for her Molar dust and threw it up into the air.
The airborne dust momentarily blinded Samantha. When she regained
her focus, she was angered to see that the falling dust had
transformed into a shield that covered the entire opening of the
hole.
Samantha never
took her eyes off of Farrah as she glared at her through the yellow
shell of the shield. Grinning, she blew the Octo Dust back into the
air.
Within
seconds, the rain began to pound downward at an even fiercer pace.
It was not water that was pelting the shield however. As it sizzled
into streams of smoke, slowly seeping through the shield, Farrah
knew that it was acid. Samantha chuckled as she stood under a
metallic umbrella that she held over her head with her left
hand.
Fearing for
Bruce’s safety, Farrah was startled as another crack of lightning
illuminated the hole. The shield was no match as the acid rain
completely disintegrated it within seconds. Making matters worse,
Samantha threw another handful of Octo Dust into the air. Farrah
knew by the rumbling from up above that something massive was
approaching.
The sky
darkened once again as a humongous Grogre leaned over the
evaporating rock shield. Helping things along, he punched a few
more holes into the shield. With the acid rain freely pouring into
the hole, Farrah lunged out of the way, but it was too late. The
skin from Farrah’s exposed right arm was severely burned. She
yelped as she pressed her back up against the wall, trying to take
cover as best as she could.
