Chapter 14

Lance checked his tie again for the fourth time. He asked himself yet again why he came to these fashion shows. It made him sick to his stomach to be out there talking to the crowd. But this time, he had his lucky charm. A glance in the mirror showed Debra getting makeup put on. She looked stunning in the dress with the diamond necklace he’d given her for Valentine’s Day.

Nikki readjusted her microphone and cleared her throat. “Anthony just finished. It’s time.”

Those words always sent a wave of fear through him, but this time, Lance smiled and nodded. “Let’s do it.”

Everyone had been expecting the line they’d been working so hard on. News had leaked about what would be here tonight, but no one had a clue about what would hit them. He hadn’t even told Anthony. He wheeled himself toward the stage and took a deep breath before going out to talk to the crowd.

“Tonight I wanted to do something special. We call it ‘A walk through time.’” He continued as the first models came onstage, sporting clothes from the twenties. Just as he’d suspected, there was a stunned silence just seconds before the crowd went wild. The models Ella had chosen were perfect, and he couldn’t help the pride that washed over him as each group came out, dressed in clothes from each decade. When it came to the seventies, he spoke again. “Tonight is dedicated to a special woman. She brought me hope when I was devastated by injuries, and a joy that I never thought I could feel. Everyone, I introduce to you, Debra Thomas.”

Debra came out onto the stage and with a small push from Nikki, she made her way down the catwalk. Her steps were sure, and she blew a kiss as she stood at the end of the stage. As she turned and came back, she winked at Lance.

The show continued on, and as they came to the final decade, the pieces he’d made that were supposed to be the focus of tonight’s show were modeled, and of course, Debra was in the black gown. Her hazel eyes shone as she walked out in front of the other models and stood while the cameras went crazy.

Whistles came from the back where Lance knew Debra’s family stood, and Lance choked up just a little. It was wonderful to have Debra’s family there to enjoy his work. It finally felt like he’d arrived.

Debra leaned her head against Lance’s chest and they curled up on her couch. “It’s here.”

Lance took the newspaper from her and opened it up to the fashion section. Pictures of his clothing designs splashed across the page, along with the reactions to his sudden change in plans. It had been a bigger hit than he’d thought it would be, and orders were pouring in. He kissed the top of Debra’s head.

“Anthony’s a little upset with us, you know.” He brushed away her hair that tickled his chin.

“Why is that?” she asked.

He chuckled. “We blew him away. Your idea was genius.”

“You’re the one who made it happen, though.” She glanced up at him, resting her chin on her hand, just inches from his face.

He touched her nose and traced her lips. “True, but it wouldn’t have happened without you. Which means that I just need you to stick by me. You can do that, right?”

She leaned forward and kissed him. When she pulled away, she smiled. “I have no intention of going anywhere.”
